What is wrong with our defense?

We're doing a **** poor job of communicating after presnap motion, which has lead to really bad busts and huge plays.

Take this play against Cal when no one picked up Ott out of the backfield. As far as I can tell:

-19 is under the impression that when his guy motioned away that he must drop and become a safety, which would have pushed 7 (not pictured) from the center of the field to the far hash to help on the 2-3 targets on that side
-But 1 still thinks he's responsible for the TE 10, which leaves no one for Ott leaking out of the backfield

Assuming 19 didn't ***** up shouldn't 1 have shifted over to cover Ott and 0 taken 10? If 24 was supposed to drop and cover Ott then we've lost the edge and QB just keeps it off tackle

And here's what I've been *****ing about since UF. Kiko can not get back off the line fast enough to cover the middle. And most of the time...the linemen engages him holding him up even more. The other two lbs are in tight, forcing the dbs to cover more area than they have the speed to.
If we are going to sim blitz, we might as well just send it.

I’m surprised LB play hasn’t been talked about more. We’re just so unsound. We don’t have playmakers in the back 7 and we play like we do. So we get no big plays and also miss the small plays that you need to make to keep things rolling when you lack talent. The field just seems wide open. Our back 7 doesn’t take anything away. The flat is open. Deep is open. The crossers are always open. The middle is open.

It reminds me of Mannys D, how it gradually got worse and worse over time. We over run everything. We have a few unplayable guys still playing a lot and JAGs across the board.

I struggle to understand some of our alignments on D, but am certainly no expert. Like before the motion on this play we had lined up in 2-high, then 0 immediately walked into the box, but he's lined up right on 1's left shoulder, so even before the motion I don't know who was responsible for Ott if he swings out of the backfield - best guess is #24 but if that's the case there's an alley for the running QB to take between #1 and #24. It looks like Bain was following the pulling guard but since #5 got demolished by 78 on Cal he ran into 5. I just don't get how this defense was supposed to succeed if Cal ran a play to the shortside of the field.

And this is long after we had blown an assignment on Ott out of the backfield that resulted in a long touchdown

I don’t know much about defense but the eyeball test (watching our safety get smoked by a TE) tells me that we can’t keep up in man coverage. Zone might limit damage but it also requires smarter or more disciplined players. We are not a disciplined team. I see that as a coaching issue.

Normally, a defense would ask their LB to cover the RB out of the backfield. The fact that both LBs are this close to each other, leads me to believe that Kiko is probably supposed to cover Ott, but I could be wrong.

We don’t have the secondary horses for as much man as we run. We 1000% need to sit in zone more and let this front earn their money. UL will be a shootout but we can’t make it easy for them and allow them to just pick on 0, and 25 all day.
And 19 and 7...

Optimistic take:

(45:17) think you got to be really I think very heartened if you're a Miami fan you were 12th this week in defensive success rate you were also like 130th in explosive rate allowed one of those things is a lot more sustainable than the other okay success rate doesn't chase explosive rate explosive rate typically regresses back to what your success rate is

Run Defense (against VT) No NT to clog the middle and LB taking bad angles or being slow.

Pass defense: too much man and weird blitzes. Players think theyre something theyre not and take too much risks (harris)

Sit in zone and play bend dont break, hope for opponent offenses make mistakes such as holding or false starts.
