What is our Run Scheme?

we can run for 500yds a game and people will still find something to whine about. can you give me a team with a perfect run scheme? that works every week?

Can't argue with stats, but my eyes tell me we don't run the ball very well. I don't think our line creates space for our RB. Tight spits? 🤷‍♂️

Martinez often has nowhere to go

I'm not a fan of IZ, but there's a reason why we run it and why everyone else runs it at an insane rip: It's a setup play. It sets up RPOs, PA passes, QB runs if wanted, etc. etc.

The issue is, it's a staple and doesn't generate much yardage anymore. You're not overloading areas, you're not even blocking hat on hat at times, you're just handing it off, freeze the LB and make a cut based on how they read the key.

Now, here's the issue we have: Teams load up the box against us and go hard on attacking the run. IZ is the best play against negating negative yards. Pulling a G or T can easily mean negative yardage if the rest doesn't shield well enough against a run commit.

Could it be better/more explosive? Sure. Do I want it to be? Absolutely. Is it in the plan for this team to do that? Not this year. The run game is supposed to be the complimentary force to the pass and not the one driving the offense.

And no... duo and IZ are not the same. Jesus...
This post should end this thread. Good stuff

We lean on teams in the run game and more often than not you look up and we’ve got 150-200 yards rushing at the end of the day.

Kind of been our MO and why we seem to pick up steam at the end of games. Teams are pretty much wilted by the 4th qt.

Well said. A very underrated point is we NEVER have negative yards on run plays. Its always positive even if only 1-2 yards

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but those inside runs on stalled drives hurt the offense because they are so predictable more than they help the offense. I think Martinez Fletcher Lyle or CJ would all benefit from more outside run plays.

We run inside zone, duo, counter (multiple variations), dart, tackle trap, outside zone, insert and toss off the top off my head this year.

We major in duo and it hits differently based on formations.
While this is true we have to be honest with ourselves.

Our main and most consistent call for every back is the inside zone.

Dawson is an air raid coach and an intricate and well coached run game is not his or any air raid coaches forte. We gotta take what comes with it.

On ANY level of football you either get a great run scheme or a great pass scheme. Rarely do you get both and it's absolutely difficult to be good at both when you don't have the practice time to do it. .

Do you want the focal point to be the run or the pass. Both have their shortcomings in the ebb and flow of a game.

Pick your poison.

If you knew our scheme, then it wouldn't be a scheme.

That’s where I stand. Our run game isn’t bad, the numbers show that, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Even bigger issue than the scheme, I just think we’re very predictable too. We don’t ever scheme our RB’s to get some space, they’re all swarmed within a yard or 2 of LOS.

I doubt it's what Dawson wants to run.

I think insiders have said that Mirabal and Mario have an input in the scheme.

It's worked well enough with Cam throwing, but it could be better.
Nah, its mostly the same run game Dawson ran at Houston. Here look..

it's so funny when people act like the relative lack of creativity in the run game is mario's "meddling" or whatever when it is in fact the obvious direct result of hiring a hal mumme tree air raid OC- the very same type of air raid offense that all these morons have been clamoring for. when you hire an air raid guy, you are almost necessarily making a compromise in the schematic diversity of your run game because that's not these dudes' specialty. go watch mike leach's offenses, for christ's sake. but hey, i'd say it's been a fine trade-off being that we have THE BEST OFFENSE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL.

just truly incredible what people on here will complain about.
