What is our Run Scheme?

Who did we play that has a run defense with a pulse? Level of Competition is masking things IMO.
That's why I left the G5 and FAMU out of the calculation. You play who is on your schedule. Of the P5 teams they have played, they have run the ball quite well. California is #17 against the run, Miami ran for 138 yards against them. This in a game where the 2nd half was all about coming back from 25 down.

As I was looking at the stats, FSU is giving up an average of over 190 a game on the ground. ****, they have sucked this season.

I really feel like the numbers are very deceiving due to our schedule and talented RB’s. Do you like this scheme/think it’s our best option?

More runs outside of the tackles would be my preference, but it's hard to complain when they are putting up the numbers they are putting up. Plenty of other areas that need cleaning up to be complaining too much about the run offense IMO.

There are bigger issues but that doesn’t mean this isn’t an issue. We are in position to be playing in the playoffs and it will get exposed by good teams. We will become one dimensional real quick and that always spells trouble.

I do not understand what Dawson is doing with our run game. Not only are we very predictable, the scheme just does not make sense to me and I’m surprised we’ve been able to get decent RB’s with what we do.

We use bunch formations and then run right up the middle every time. There are no run lanes. Truly a 3 yards and cloud of dust scheme, just done out of shotgun formations.

There’s a reason Lyle was the best RB today, because he has the ability to bounce it outside of the massive clog in the middle created by these bunch formations when Martinez and Fletcher cannot. I don’t blame Fletcher and Martinez though, they have no lanes to run through and they’re not quick enough to bounce it outside.
@TRick72, drop it here?

we played a weak schedule. Do you really think we have a good run scheme?
Yes. Our run scheme is better than good. It's pretty, pretty, pretty good. Before today we were fourth in rushing success rate and fifth in epa/rush. We ran the ball well today even before Lyle broke Wake in half. This board is a special place.

We succeed at a high rate when we run and average a healthy ypc. We don't commit holding penalties in the run game and rarely get tackled behind the line of scrimmage. What isn't there to like? Oh yeah we don't run toss plays to the wide side of the field with our fifth string running back Chris Johnson Jr who is really fast. Turrible.

The one game we lost we strangely didn't run the ball enough against a team that sucks stopping the run (they gave up 250+ on the ground to NC ST this week).

Run the **** ball. Then run it again

181 yards a game
Converting short yardage
25 tds
Not our biggest issue
same thing was said when Florida A&M was running on us and people stated that we were nitpicking. We haven't played anyone that has the talent to stop our offense. Wait until we actually play elite defenses.

Our IOL is huge and pretty good run blockers, not very athletic to run outside zone or gap schemes alot so yea. We try to mix in an outside zone play here and there but **** never works lol

Inside zone and duo is where mario and mirabal want us to live for the most part, and im not mad at it. Early in the season the blocking was mid but since the first bye week picked it up and we are a really good run team

I think the run game is a little bit limited because we don’t have a back who is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. Maybe Lyle will end up being such a back but he’s a true freshman and we need experience for blitz pick ups and everything else a running back needs to do this offense. We’ve only had a few long runs, all from Lyle and Allen.

What happened to Ajay Allen by the way? Is he injured? He seemed to the change of pace, ‘speed’ back after pounding the defense with Martinez and Fletcher.

The scheme as I see it is to do two things…

1. The early inside running is to punish the defenses front seven… lean on them with our OL and 230lb RBs to where they’re tired come the 4th quarter and we then run the ball better when they are gassed. Not to diminish what Lyle or Allen have done with their touches but they absolutely benefit from being fresh legs when a defense is tired from tackling Dame or Mark for 2-3 quarters.

2. The inside running makes the LBs and Safeties cheat up which creates better passing lanes.

And since no team is keeping us from getting the 3.5-4 yards a carry its design works exactly how it’s supposed to though.

It’s not **** and we most like won’t have any one RB go over 100 yds in the first half too often, it appears Mario and Mirabal want to punish teams physically than have a NASCAR type offense which we could probably get away with.

I’m impressed that you can still complain given how successful we’ve been doing it. Even before Lyle broke off that long one, the run game was going pretty well.

We run inside zone, duo, counter (multiple variations), dart, tackle trap, outside zone, insert and toss off the top off my head this year.

We major in duo and it hits differently based on formations.
This. Scheme wise.

I think the OP is actually asking what is the

agree with both of these.

I think a lot of people were expecting the Air raid run game, but Mario cares less about the box count and will often allow free hitters on the front side, but Martinez and fletcher hit hard and fall forward a lot.
This then opens up the game in the 4th quarter.
This isn’t spread to run, it is grind you down, with a bubble attached.

Yeah we don’t get explosives early in the game, but the pay off is there in the 4th which is part of the reason we are able to distance ourselves at the end.

We’ve got athletic linemen who can pull and we never do it. No pulling, no counters, nothing. Inside zone until you die
The C has issues pulling. Last year they ran pin and pull a lot because the C was more athletic.

That said, they’ve done a good job running the ball. No reason to complain.

I'm not a fan of IZ, but there's a reason why we run it and why everyone else runs it at an insane rip: It's a setup play. It sets up RPOs, PA passes, QB runs if wanted, etc. etc.

The issue is, it's a staple and doesn't generate much yardage anymore. You're not overloading areas, you're not even blocking hat on hat at times, you're just handing it off, freeze the LB and make a cut based on how they read the key.

Now, here's the issue we have: Teams load up the box against us and go hard on attacking the run. IZ is the best play against negating negative yards. Pulling a G or T can easily mean negative yardage if the rest doesn't shield well enough against a run commit.

Could it be better/more explosive? Sure. Do I want it to be? Absolutely. Is it in the plan for this team to do that? Not this year. The run game is supposed to be the complimentary force to the pass and not the one driving the offense.

And no... duo and IZ are not the same. Jesus...
