What is going on?

Mario sold a “new Miami” last year and then fell flat on his face during the season

It’s put up or shut up time with him this year already. Because if we don’t win (9-10 games) with a rebuilt and veteran OL and TVD coming back, we’re def not winning the next 2 years as we try to develop a new QB and a young OL

Are you asking in reference to other schools knowing our offers or Vice versa? If so, recruits do it as a negotiating tactic. For example, Barney was given a number by Nebraska, we didn’t want to match it.
I get not wanting to overpay for a guy like Barney, especially considering who he was allegedly asking to get paid like. Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury to pay market value for DT or outside WR in this class. We’re going to have to overpay some in this class or hope we have a good season, land a few flips then pay market in the 25 class.

esp w a harder schedule in 25

This recruiting class is more than ever tied to how this season goes. It’s very much a make or break scenario. If we have say 10-12 spots left, who are we even recruiting that we have a better than good shot with? Most of the guys we seem to be going after are already committed elsewhere or are heavy leans. So if we don’t flip people which is less likely now with NIL I do not even see how we fill a 25 person class?

People want to act like we didn’t hire Mario for talent acquisition. We always knew winning would be secondary to that. If we wanted winning over recruiting, we would have gone Lane…

Except he’s quickly finding out Miami is an exception to the rule considering how long we’ve sucked... which is a huge problem. This season is the most important one in the last twenty plus years. Falter in ‘23, and he doesn’t have jack to sell on the trail.
Sounds like the suck tax is progressive based on how long you've sucked.

I don't think it's about overpaying because we are hearing NIL is on par with anyone. It feels like we are just being out recruited and for whatever reason these players don't want to come here
I keep hearing that our NIL is on par with everyone else’s and we’re not overpaying.

I get it, but that’s the problem.

Let’s put it this way. Let’s say you’re a new software engineer and you have two offers. One to work at Google and another to work at a startup. The salary is the same.

Which one do you work for?

If you polled a majority of new software engineers that have talent and ambition, I would imagine that there’s a solid majority that would pick Google over the startup even though “the salaries are on par.”

In order for the startup to build their brand and develop a kickass product, they would have to “overpay” talented software engineers.

To that effect, it’s only overpaying if it doesn’t pay off in the long run.

I get a kick of the title of the message thread " What's going on here." Well if you come in with so much fan fare and the season ends in 5-7 and in my humble opinion the worst hurricane season I've seen since I began going to see the Hurricanes which is 1983. Then what do you expect? It is easy to recruit against a school or coach with a dismal record like that. This season Mario will be on the hot seat immediately and if he doesn't win at least 9 games its a disappointing season. He must win either the Texas A&M or Clemson game. NO EXCUSES AT ALL MARIO!

This is the point in the coaching cycle where cognitive dissonance/meta gaslighting takes effect. Things are clearly not going well, but we can’t admit it because things are not going well and we don’t want to make things worse by admitting that things aren’t going well.

Some people will see through the gaslighting and see reality—those people we be labeled as part of the problem; those people will also be labeled as part of the solution.

Some people will gaslighted and not see reality—those people we be labeled as part of the problem; those people will also be labeled as part of the solution.

I think we will go extremely hard after Texas Maalik Murphy in the off season. Manning is a shoe in 2024 and it has nothing to with merit .

Great analogy! If we are "matching" thats the problem!
