What if....

Dallas Crawford will surprise people in this offense.
Cat like quickness and will be used on screens, draws, jet sweeps, etc.

What if a meteorite hits Gainesville in four days?

Do we pencil that in as a "win?"

Or what if just before kickoff, Muschum get his pencil ****** caught in his zipper and it requires surgery to get the little fella free?

Do we start the game late? Do we make him get the surgery on the sideline? Do we give a tinker's ****?

This is football, stuff happens. I mean, UM was one really bad hit on Ken Dorsey, from having Ethenic Sands behind center( knock on wood that never happened) one year. But while Miami may not have the RB depth of say, 2000 or 2001, I think the guys behind Duke can play a bit and bring different things to the table.

Clements has had 2.5 seasons to make his mark and has done next to nothing.

What had James done prior to last season? Most UM fans thought he was a bum. Now, we love him because of his tremendous leadership and a few clutch plays. But he's slowly morphing into something that he wasn't while he was here--a high quality back.

Clements had a neck injury last year, so I won't count last year against him.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Mike James' soph campaign was solid. He had 398 yards on 70 carries and 13 catches. Those are more touches, as a Soph, than Clements has earned his entire career here. What gives me some hope is that Clements' yards per carry numbers (albeit much smaller in sample size) are more consistent than Mike James'.

James was a decent player. Nothing more and nothing less. I just don't want to see him built into something he wasn't. I'm exceedingly confident that the backup RBs we have on the roster today can match or exceed what James brought to the table as a player. As a leader and a teammate? No way.

You remember Clements taking James' reps as a between the tackles runner as 2011 progressed. He took those reps because he was more effective at that job. Clements is also an exceptional receiver.

I vividly recall OT making a lot of the clutch plays in the last drive of that 6-3 thriller against USF in 2011.

Easy. We'll just have to unleash Mr. Tennessee Football 2x running Elder a bit earlier. He is going to shock some people with his similarities to The Dukester. Granted he is tiny, but that won't matter if no one can get their hands on him.

Play the back up rb.

This. Use the big's (Gus) and the current vets...and maybe mix in Corn more than before the hypothetical Duke injury. Corn intrigues me.

Corn has been practicing at CB exclusively.

If you watch the last fall camp report (or the 2nd to last, cant remember) you will clearly see C. Elder in the backfield on the first play action pass that was shown.

I'm not sure but there might be another position change we dont know about yet.

Here's what I hope for from this group:

Clements needs to give us about 350 yards on 80 carries this year.
Hagens might be able to give us around 110 yards on 35 carries this year.
Gus Bus needs to get it together and give us around 300 yards on 60 carries this year.
Dallas Crawford needs to play spot situations and give us around 360 yards 80 carries this year.

Total = 255 carries for 1,120 (4.4 ypc) from RBs not named Duke and including a good amount of mop-up duty.

Add in what I've projected from Duke, and that represents a 30% increase in rush attempts over last year's identity.

That would be a huge increase in rushing. A 30% would have our rushing attempts at around 480 from 371 last year. I do not know if we rush the ball that many times this year. I expect Duke to get around 200 carries this year. Under your projection he would have 225. If you take away Stephen Morris' 50 carries than we ran the ball 320 times with our backs last year. We will soon find out the true identity of Coach Coley's offense. With our current personal, I really can't see a 30% increase happening. We did run a low amount of plays last year. With changing circumstances, that number should go up this year. 20% increase in rushing attempts is definite possibility, but there's so many unknown variables that will go into this number. Time will tell

I am personally looking to get the same thing out of our backups as you are. I do not think we will run the ball as much though. I want our running backs to be tough between the tackles & show good north-south ability. I hope a clear cut #2 emerges within the early weeks of the season. Right now we have options, (unproven but they are options) from what the coaches have said I expect Crawford & Clements to get the majority of the carries behind duke. Gus could be a complete stud, but until he jumps the other two guys ahead of him I'm not counting him for more than 40/50 carries. I am also not sure how many practices Gus missed as well. It could take him a couple weeks to get accustomed to the college game. Mike James had about 150 carries IIRC. Clements and Crawford could very well end up w/ around 75-75 carries this year. (Ex.)

The main thing here is filling the role & consistency. We won't be asking these backs to play the lead, just come in and do your job. They will be playing with an experienced o-line, best in the ACC which will be a huge benefit. To go with that, we also have the best quarterback in the division.

James did have 719 yards rushing and 241 yards receiving going into his senior season. Not exactly a superstar, but those numbers show he was a solid contributor.

Mike James also got those yards wiping off the ground for Lamar "Miller Time" Miller-Time and being a generally reliable back up bruiser. Clements is not proven to be a reliable back up, and is not a bruiser. I'm an OT fan because of a few nice looking runs over the past 8 years he's been a back up, but he's not going to replace the Big Unit Randy Johnson to even 20% of full charge. Crawford retweets too much undue twitter praise for me to take him seriously right now.If Duke goes down, its pass-Mo Hagens 4 yard dive-pass and repeat till score or punt.

Who's going to take you seriously? Fans show him love and he is happy, that's so uncommon for an athlete. (Sarcasm). If you're going to state Crawford won't be a reliable #2, state his lack of experience, running style, statistics, etc. to prove your point.
