We need to bring in more speed in the back 7.

Couldnt agree more. For us to really take that next step on defense, we need speed. Part of the reason Tennison was my favorite recruit this cycle. That was a huge blow.

I think Marcus Clarke and Christian Williams will bring additional speed to the secondary. I think Branch will drop his 40 time after he hits the college conditioning program. Tutu’s speed is at another level, so I’m not sure there is much most CBs can do once he turns the corner and gets outside. That first TD was a mesh play, and I think Pinckney was supposed to cut that off, because Gilbert broke and picked up the other guy.

Couch has good closing speed. Im excited about him. Like OP said, we need to add speed to the whole back 7 though.

Two options:

Take more top recruits from the top recruiting programs (not happening soon).

Or

Take more athletes in classes like Clarke or Restrepo (or to go further back guys like Dallas who was a QB then WR then RB) who may not have a set college position yet.

It’s about evaluations first and foremost. Been saying this since Coker was here. Varies by position also. We’ve reached for athletes who weren’t tough enough at WR and gotten burned. We’ve also been burned by guys who have too little athletic ability. OL recruiting evals are different from DB. Just need to understand recruiting and get serious about it.

Also, rare athletes are hard to come by, but most kids are within a standard deviation of the mean. As for those kids, it’s about attitude, toughness, competitiveness, effort. For the great athletes, if you assume the ones who have it all are hard to get for us these days, then it’s a tough assessment as to whether the ones we target they project or can learn. Kids who are bad athletes, we should not take.

Man was zooming on that last TD by Loserville. He lapped Knowles...
