Was Our Defensive Performance an Aberration

Consigliere putting a safety on the TE was the type of adjustment I had in mind. Just wondering what Canes thought would be a good method for limiting FSU and Va Tech's success at utilizing their TE. I agree also that the 4 INTs didn't help and will add that not being disruptive upfront also aided their passing game.

I think we need to start by not relying on our defense so much. We gave them 4 extra possessions (thanks Morris).

As for stoping the TE, you bump him on the line or put a safety on him.

On Ebron's big play, you had a 13 yard pass turn into a 71 yard TD. Kirby and Howard collided and prevented the very simple tackle.

Unfortunately the best guy we could have put on Ebron got hurt- Kacy Rogers. Say what u will about him, he can physically match up with him better than anyone else we have.

look u turn the ball over 4 times on the road and only hold em to 23 points. thats a good D. UF turned it over what 5 times and they held us to 21 and they have an ELITE d. dont worry so much about yards. donofrio and golden have said they dont worry bout yards they worry bout points. they want to be a top 20 D in points not yards and thats the only defensive stat that matters, frankly.

The offense (mainly morris) put the defense in a horrible situation, they have to limit on the **** ups though, the two touchdown throws were on people messing up (kirby and howard tackling each other, and gunter and jenkins messing up on the coverage) these were things we were talking about all last season, we havent seen that much **** ups this season, until this game which in turn giving up 14 points, gotta work on that to make sure the mess ups arent a regular thing like last year

Thanks. I'm familiar with o'leary not as much with VT's TE. I look forward to seeing if we make adjustments and if so what they are.

(Just to talk offense for a minute, ignore their defense or teams overall)

Here is where I would rank the team's overall offenses: UNC, FSU and VT

1. FSU

(decent gap)

2. UNC

(decent gap)

3. VT

In terms of TE Ability:

1. UNC (no need to discuss his ability, we know)

(Tremendous Gap)

2. FSU (Nick O'Leary 6'3 248 Junior: 11 for 132 and 5 TDs)

3. VT (Kalvin Cline 6'5 235 Freshman: 15 for 164 and 1 TD)

Those are their stats through 5 games for FSU and 6 games for VT. They don't really use their TEs and they are nowhere near the level of UNC. Not really concerned with VT/FSU using their TE as much as UNC. I think putting a safety on one of them would be a good way to take them out of the game.

I think may initial post may have unintentionally misled somes Canes into thinking that I believe that TEs are going to beat us by themselves. I don't believe that, but I do believe that if o'leary has a similar night receiving as Ebron it's going to be a long night in Tallahassee because FSU overall is a much better team than UNC.

This is not a UM caliber D.

Dont misunderstand me. 5X made the point in another thread. UM has castoffs, Highsmith, Rogers, Gaines, Green, Renfro, Gunter, starting at critical positions and still is 6-0 with stellar red zone D and 2nd half performances. Classic overachievers. Its fun to watch, but it is what it is, UM is a class away from being back to studs two deep all across the D.
UM can't get consistent pressure without a blitz against even an average OL, because this is not a UM caliber D-line.

It soon will be though, as the studs from the last and next classes fill out the DL with savages. That remains the missing ingredient. When UM gets back to a couple guys who consistently play in the backfield, QBs like Renner won't look so good.

Soon, very soon. And in the meantime, it is simply shocking to see the change in culture. The savages UM will plug into this system, this culture will be U-tough and never quit.

So PROUD of this team.

yes I've been saying that since the UF game. our defense is still littered with 2* projects and late pickups that are playing well above what anyone could have expected. that is exciting for the future. we are ahead of schedule right now. just keep on grinding

TEs in general are defenses worst nightmares, i dont think its just our team, if you have a really good TE its going to be a long game for a team

Actually, Kirby was lost on the crossing route, then recovered, hit Ebron high and whiffed. Howard made a poor attempt to undercut him and then colided with Kirby. When Ebron was split Miami had a safety on him. That dude was the best player on the field. One **** of a speciman. I'm sure the tight end crazy NFL execs are licking their chops for this kid.

Communication on the crossing routes was an issue last night.

I think our offense made our defense look worse than it is. Our defense won the game for us last night.... well, that and the toughness of Dallas Crawford.

I wasn't sold on Crawford until last night, now I'm riding with him. He got it done when it counts, he fought for extra yards when we needed them. That guy's effort just embodies what it takes to be a great football player.

Nick O'Leary isn't in the same hemisphere as Ebron.

FWIW, people keep b*tching about the lack of blitzing, but I think that was Coach D by design. Pretty sure he tried to only blitz when we could disguise it, and many times we were creeping up only to have Renner check off, which would force us to back off.

IIRC, Renner ate our lunch last year burning us when we blitzed. I think Coach D anticipated that UNC would be expecting us to blitz the **** out of Renner, and instead decided not to.

It may have been for the best, if they were expecting us to blitz all night, they could have burned us, instead we kept most plays in front of us, and held them in the red zone.

It would be interesting to see how many offensive snaps UNC had, I would think it's a lot. That's going to add up to yards for them. Honestly I didn't think our defense played that badly out there. We just kept giving UNC the ball.

Our D won the game for us... I'll tell you that much.

Our defense gave up 500 yards of offense last night, 199 yards of which went to Ebron their TE. During the off season I recall several threads that discussed the inability of our LBs to play the pass and that J. Grace would be an immediate upgrade. Obviously, Grace is not ready to get a lot of prime time snaps, which is to be expected, but we've got to find a way to get that issue fixed.

With FSU and Va Tech on the horizon what adjustments do we need to make to improve our pass defense in covering the tight end? Defensive gurus what say you?

Yes. This

And he won't. I'd be much more concerned with crossing routes to Shaw and Greene.

Right but a decent play turned out to go for 71 yards. Am I wrong?

When has Miami had studs 2 deep all across the depth chart.... we had studs 2 deep in a lot of positions on the depth chart, mostly offense though. Miami had greater talent that started on defense.... like Vilma, DJ Williams, Antrel Rolle, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed.

But if they went down it was over, our cornerback position was very suspect outside of Antrel Rolle in 2003.
