Was Our Defensive Performance an Aberration

Our defense gave up 500 yards of offense last night, 199 yards of which went to Ebron their TE. During the off season I recall several threads that discussed the inability of our LBs to play the pass and that J. Grace would be an immediate upgrade. Obviously, Grace is not ready to get a lot of prime time snaps, which is to be expected, but we've got to find a way to get that issue fixed.

With FSU and Va Tech on the horizon what adjustments do we need to make to improve our pass defense in covering the tight end? Defensive gurus what say you?

we will not play a better tight end this season. it happens. o'leary couldn't hold ebron's jock.

I think that's a little of who they are. Not as good as the early results had indicated and much better than last season.
Good enough to beat everyone on the schedule, except maybe FSU. I was dumbfounded at the lack of pressure on Renner for most of the game.

The Clemson game is going to tell us a lot about FSU if Winston has a typical day, then we're in trouble.

just sloppy.....some bad breaks on the long TD...missed tackles on a Sure fire NFL guy...

Still processing...the week off hurt us we need game speed, we should be better going fwd

An Aberration is something you havent seen before....or seen very often. Yeah we havent seen our defense get gashed like that this season, but we have played FAU, USF, SvSt, UF and GT. None of which are exactly known for their stellar QB play. Last night look quite similar to how we played against, Vt in ,11, Duke, UVA, BC last year as games that pop into my head. D No loves that passive 3 deep zone, it irks me to watch us play like that. That is a defense you play with teams who can't match up against the opponent, so they try to keep everything in front of them and hope for a mistake. Hey Golden and D no are way smarter than i am, but regardless of the scheme, playing passive like that has never been Miami style. Least not that i can remember

My favorite is when we blitzed and UNC ran a drag route across the formation for an easy 10+ yards.

Our defense is significantly improved from last year, but we are still an average (maybe slightly above average) unit.

People had inflated hopes based off of some decent performances against terrible offenses.

Our offense did them no favors last night with all the turnovers. Along with UNC fast tempo offense, they were kinda spent.

Not throwing the towel in on em just yet.

our defense is much improved. And to be honest with the style that is being coached at Miami we might be ahead of the curve. In this modern age of spread tempo offense where you can't touch the WRs and big hits are frowned upon. Teams are going to put up major yards. The key is not giving up TDs. Last years problem was we were so bad we couldn't get timely stops. We couldnt force turnovers or prevent TDs. This year we are getting timely stops and we are forcing turnovers. We still had some blown coverages and just mind boggling mistakes by our linebackers. These spread offenses take away certain options for the defense. For example Jessica Palmer applauded us for finally sending a blitz late in the 4th. We got pressure and it was the right call. He thought we should have blitz more. BUT right before they had run **** like 8 screens in a row. If you blitz on a screen pass outside it could go to the house. If we had held that TE to his career average of around 66 yards. The offensive output looks much different. Our Run defense is light years better I was impressed how we stuffed the gators and I was impressed again last night. They could barely get a yard between the tackles.

There were so many plays he was literally wide open underneath. Our LBs drop 15 yards into coverage and leave underneath routes wide open? Or CBs have the flats in cover 2 and weren't coming up to make plays?

Don't know.

The Defense kept Miami in the game honestly.... 2 clutch interceptions from Howard, a clutch sack from McCord, and making UNC have to kick FGs all kept the game in reach.

6 points, 200 yards(47 coming in the last 16 seconds), Ebron had 2 catches, one of which was on their last drive, 3 of their 5 drives were 3 and out(their 6th one was technically a 3 plays and end of game), and an interception in the second half. The defense played more than good enough to win in the second half, the offense just sucked, really sucked, save for a few series. My only real complaints with the defense were tackling, that's on the players, and getting off the field on 3rd down consistently, which is a combination of players and play calling. I'd like to see more man to man bump coverage and blitzing on 3rd and 4 to 3rd and 10. Take away the quick/hot throws and get to the QB. There's work to do, but a win is a win, and there are over 100 teams who wish they played ****** last night on their way to being 6-0. Now we get to sit back and enjoy the weekend.

This is not a UM caliber D.

Dont misunderstand me. 5X made the point in another thread. UM has castoffs, Highsmith, Rogers, Gaines, Green, Renfro, Gunter, starting at critical positions and still is 6-0 with stellar red zone D and 2nd half performances. Classic overachievers. Its fun to watch, but it is what it is, UM is a class away from being back to studs two deep all across the D.
UM can't get consistent pressure without a blitz against even an average OL, because this is not a UM caliber D-line.

It soon will be though, as the studs from the last and next classes fill out the DL with savages. That remains the missing ingredient. When UM gets back to a couple guys who consistently play in the backfield, QBs like Renner won't look so good.

Soon, very soon. And in the meantime, it is simply shocking to see the change in culture. The savages UM will plug into this system, this culture will be U-tough and never quit.

So PROUD of this team.

Consigliere putting a safety on the TE was the type of adjustment I had in mind. Just wondering what Canes thought would be a good method for limiting FSU and Va Tech's success at utilizing their TE. I agree also that the 4 INTs didn't help and will add that not being disruptive upfront also aided their passing game.

I think we need to start by not relying on our defense so much. We gave them 4 extra possessions (thanks Morris).

As for stoping the TE, you bump him on the line or put a safety on him.

On Ebron's big play, you had a 13 yard pass turn into a 71 yard TD. Kirby and Howard collided and prevented the very simple tackle.

Your point about this being a reoccurring issue is well taken, obviously I was referring to this season and projecting forward to the games ahead. In any case, it sounds like you want us to play a more aggressive style of defense - perhaps more man coverages. I agree.

Baldychutes you make excellent points all around. I'm hoping that the guys we bring in at LB will be able to play in space and better in pass coverage.

(Just to talk offense for a minute, ignore their defense or teams overall)

Here is where I would rank the team's overall offenses: UNC, FSU and VT

1. FSU

(decent gap)

2. UNC

(decent gap)

3. VT

In terms of TE Ability:

1. UNC (no need to discuss his ability, we know)

(Tremendous Gap)

2. FSU (Nick O'Leary 6'3 248 Junior: 11 for 132 and 5 TDs)

3. VT (Kalvin Cline 6'5 235 Freshman: 15 for 164 and 1 TD)

Those are their stats through 5 games for FSU and 6 games for VT. They don't really use their TEs and they are nowhere near the level of UNC. Not really concerned with VT/FSU using their TE as much as UNC. I think putting a safety on one of them would be a good way to take them out of the game.
