VT in a Nut Shell

Thomas has been their running game, we must take this away to win this weekend. Their D is legit, scoring points will be very difficult. I think if we limit turnovers and tackle Thomas, we should come out victorious.

He isn't even that good at running the ball. He runs it a lot out of that BS read option. Thomas is a big target that is not that fast. If you miss that first tackle, he will get some yards. Over the last five games he has 85 attempts for 284 yards and 2 TDs. That is 3.3 YPC.

I agree, but we seem to have a knack of making not so good players look great

I hear ya. We were doing well against the run this year, at least before FSU. VT brings nothing that matches that and I think Winston is a better runner than Thomas. The advantage Thomas has is he is bigger but Winston is faster.

Somehow we held Thomas back last year with a defense that was much worse than this one.

I've watched every game they've played and the obvious slaps you in the face...

Defense: Blitz, blitz, blitz. Foster as usual will be dialing it up all night. IMHO His scheme is the most aggressive we will see all year, and that includes FSU.
- DL - Usual suspects here. James Gayle(99) will be in Morris' face all night. Has decent size and speed and most importantly VERY VERY high motor. Guy just doesnt quit. DT Hopkins(98) and Luther Maddy(92) although undersized(5'11-6'Hopkins and 6'-6'1 Maddy) fight tooth and nail every snap McDermott will really be exposed similarly to the UF game if he doesn't tighten up.

-LB - Jack Tyler(58) is a name some remember from last year. Despite the game this kid is that football player people always talk about. Kid may not be DP52 but he is around the ball when the play stops often enough to where you find yourself remembering his name. Edwards(24) verteran rush LB. Great speed of the edge and is used as such. Think of a faster Cornelius who loves to tackle.

- DB- The Fuller's are household names, but Faycson, and Jarrett will be there every step of the way. Crisp routes won't be enough to shake these guys. IMHO Where we get them is the double move. They jump a lot of routes almost blindly sometimes like lemmings. Poor route running and/or bobbled passes will result in INTS against this group, and that is FACT.

- K - By now everyone knows about Journell. This guy was once considered one of the best PK's in CFB but now the lights are flickering on and off between the ears and he gets shaken easily. If we can force them to FG's will be the best defensive scheme we can muster and I'm not joking.

Offense: Balanced attack that consumes a lot of clock. They have no interest in style points, just W's
- VT offense lives and dies by their WR's and Thomas. Thomas can get the ball anywhere on the field at anytime, he just doesn't have a capable running game because their patchwork OL is always getting their **** handed to them. He then tries to do waaay too much causing the INTs.

- WR's Demitri Knowles and Walk-on Wille Byrn: They have ONE WR(Knowles) who could give us fits. Kid is raw, but has speed to burn and is due for a breakout game. Byrn plays like small Wes Welker type slot and is pretty smart sure-handed guy but isn't an elite talent. D.J. Coles is the lone veteran WR and although a starter is used in the short over the middle passing game and redzone because of his 6'4 230lb size.

- They have no running game to speak of as it's by committee of Joel. Caleb, JC Coleman, and Trey Edmunds, and Chris Mangus. All of which are althletic guys just not pure RB's I believe Edmunds and Caleb were going to be OLB's before the season started if that tells you anything, and Mangus is used much like Coleman as a scat back. Generally it's Edmunds to get the bulk of the carries with Coleman as a change of pace on passing downs.

-TE Kalvin Cline (yeah, seriously!) Mirrors Clive in that he is there for for blocking and is usually only used as a bail out WR. Almost never used as a first option, but he is very athletic and after the way UNC torched us with Ebron, I can see them attacking the middle of our zone relentless.

We only lose this game if we go in there over confident, or worried about seeing and FSU rematch. We take care of the ball and don't let Logan Thomas look decent. WE WIN. Go Canes!

bud foster will blitz the crap out of us... and we will give lt all day to throw.. that doesn't bode well for us.

Like others have said, we need to put pressure on Thomas because he's going to move the ball if we don't. He's pretty much like Morris, when he's comfortable in the pocket he'll find guys.

For us to win this game our defense will have to play lights out and completely lock down their offense and make it easy for Morris and Co. Bend but don't break where VT controls TOP and gets a bunch of field goals and a TD will not be good enough imo. Special teams will also be big as this is the type of game where field position will be huge.

They also just got Antone Exum (All-ACC) back at CB so they now have 5 or 6 NFL quality DB's.

What do you think we can do on offense to be effective against them?

VASoulCane,

At the time we played them UF v. VT

UF DL v. VT DL

UF D v. V D

Who is better?

Without question UF's DL was better earlier in the season.
VT gets the edge in total production IMHO because of coaching. To be honest I think UF's D is better as a whole talent wise, but Bud Foster is genius at play calling and there's the difference. Foster will have DB's and LB's in the backfield all game. The guy is just great at what he does.

TOP control...seriously. Check out the Duke game. VT had the ball for almost 40 minutes, 40 minutes.

As for Yards (and the dink and dunk)

Against BC Total Yards: 446

Against Duke: 387

They dinked and dunked and didn't win. VT has 8 turnovers over those 2 games. Their offense is pretty bad and neither BC nor Duke has something that great in terms of a beastly defenses. Here is BC and Duke:

BC Scoring D: 72nd with 27.4 PPG
BC Sacks Per Game: 12th 3.0 SPG
Duke Scoring D: 36th with 22.5 PPG
Duke Sacks Per Game: 78th with 1.75 SPG

Thomas just makes mistakes, we should be encouraging him to make mistakes (getting pressure)

Agreed. I want to say this, at the time we played them.

UF's Offense > VT's Offense

Not by much but I think UF was better.

This is just my couch Quarterbacking, but I would run at them. Don't be cute because despite their ability to cover and pick passes, they are vulnerable to a hard-nose OL with that undersized front 7. Boston College game gave the blueprint. If we can get tough play from the OL I think we shorten the game.

Their defense is a matchup nightmare for our offense and offensive schemes. Moreso than FSU.

There will obviously be a dropoff in talent and size up front, but this is a scrappy team, that will punch you in mouth, and won't lay down regardless of the score. Well Coached team.

With more talented players, they basically do what WF does along their DL, except they have an NFL defensive backfield behind it. Now, add the fact that they sprinkle in the types of defensive looks (blitzes, coverages behind it) that give problems to QBs making secondary reads. Sprinkle in the fact we lost our most explosive weapon on offense.

It's not a good matchup. I hope we claw our way to a win.

I don't see Golden playing this game at an aggressive pitch on defense. He is going to go conservative and hope VT turns the ball over with vanilla or they are held to FG's. I don't see Al in the aggressive mold.

No Duke and no Dorset is a big big problem for this game. Neither team may score more than 10 points.
