Van Dyke Reflects on Previous Game and Looks Ahead to Upcoming Matchup

My understanding is that Tyler has freedoms he never had before. I can certainly be wrong about that.

My statement is based on watching every home game live and TVD locks on to initial reads many, many times over and over. I have end zone seats so I follow his eyes when he’s coming down to my end zone (west EZ) or follow his head turns when he’s going opposite of me to the East EZ.

Not saying he locks on to one read every pass but I am more than comfortable saying he locks on to one receiver on 3/4 passes. Maybe that is the design of the Air Raid Dawson runs but he’s done it under every OC he’s played under.

When Kaya and Malik were the QBs, I had same seats. When Dorsey was the QB, is at in the same West Endzone at the Orange Bowl. Their heads were constantly on the hunt coming off reads and searching for other reads.

I certainly have appreciated the view you provide .

Purdy is the perfect example. He was a really good QB at Iowa State but most people in the east coast don’t watch Big 12/Pac-10 football.

Purdy is a super smart kid with very good mechanics, arm, intangibles but doesn’t have the elite profile of a Josh Allen or even the QB they drafted higher in Trey Lance.

But you aren’t going to fool Purdy and he’s able to understand and process information and he almost always knows where to go with the ball while also having some awesome weapons. Very Bradyesque start to his career. He also has a very good coach in Shannahan.

TVD has some very good weapons and he uses them well but not very consistently and has major trouble when he has to adjust on the fly. If you don’t put it in a platter for TVD he struggles to catch up. The MTSU game and this GT game are very concerning games for his resume and the success of our program.

He has the same weapons the other QBs couldn't do half as much with.

Hats off to the young man. SF found a gem.

As for Tvd “ being a one read guy” that’s been proven false repeatedly in breakdowns when he goes through three progressions. His biggest issue is he expects something to be open in pre snap so he will stare it down. Rather than coming off. When the coverage isn’t what he expects he occasionally will force it still. Which is still unacceptable. There’s a difference in being a one read guy and locking on to guys when he expects something. I don’t think some understand that.

Lastly Dawson was a lot of the issue as well Saturday, TVD was off early and his feet showed he was unsure. In the first half Dawson had way too many deep shots drawn up when GT was obviously sitting back. Way too many corners / posts drawn up. We should’ve been using outs, hitches , curls , slants and other quick game until they got out of it, In the second half they were a tad more aggressive.

Their DC had him and TVD off all night. It was like we expected to run the ball at will and hit deep shots. Once that didn’t happen there was no answer. The O was very basic like M of O. Nothing was exposed but more of an awful , kinda arrogant game plan.

Like I said earlier, it comes down to whether Dawson is the type of OC whose philosophy is to force the defense to adjust to him, or the type of OC who adjusts to the defense. Both types CAN be successful, but if the former, then you need to have a talent advantage over the opponent. I think we can eventually get to that point - Cristobal is trying to build an OL that can push around any DL, but we're not there yet.

We know who Dawson works for. It's not too hard to figure out what his philosophy likely is.

Ironically, when he has a lot of time, with this awesome OL we have, and he has to read more of the defense, he struggles.

This is what's mind boggling to me. With this o-line I never expected that type of game from him. I expected a couple of uneven games but nothing outright atrocious like that. He started from the 1st snap rushing things like he'd been harassed all night.

I thought I knew what to expect from him but at this point I couldn't say. We go as TVD goes. I just hope that's somewhere nice.

Now, it could be argued that when he is stressed, uncomfortable, off, or whatever, he tends to telegraph and lock on his first read. But he has shown a lot of games of moving to more than one read.

I think the issue is that TVD and Dawson weren't on the same page. If they were, TVD may not have agreed and tried to force it anyway.

Really wish there was a place we could get the all-22 for college like it is for the nfl

He's better than average, and that will result in winning games we probably shouldn't and losing games we probably shouldn't.
The semantics aren't as important as you all are attempting to make it. Now, if someone wants to argue all 15 times Restrepo was targeted, he was the best option. This would be a great time to interject.

Yea I mentioned somewhere else on here, a&m played alot of man and single high safety basically letting their guys play 1on1.

Its easy to read that, u can see clearly if a guy isn’t open..Vs zone it’s about finding the windows with timing and reading out the entire concept and thats what gtech made him do along with taking away what he likes with the outside the numbers stuff, bethune did it some of that too but they ain’t have the guys to matchup at all.

Zone the dbs can just follow your eyes, qb has an advantage vs man. You gotta have eye discipline and move guys with your eyes to creat windows if they aren’t there and thats where he struggles.

Cribby had a good explanation in this thread about him having a pre snap read and he trys to work a concept that’s covered, thats another thing about how i was saying he’s too strick with his reads u gotta process that its not there and move your eyes to find someone open or manipulate the defender and then go where u want

He actually could’ve thrown to Restrepo more than he did, as to me, he’s the best route runner on the team (IMO), and knows how to get himself open, but there have been plenty of times in this game and other games where he could’ve gone elsewhere with the ball. I don’t think that is uncommon, however for most QBs but it’s what separates the good from the greats. Always knowing where to go with the ball.

The A&M game, the corners were playing 7-10 yards off the receiver. He obviously had some great throws in that game.

TVD goes to X because he's reliable. He gets open and he catches virtually any ball sent his way. He moves the chains

People have been looking for a #1 receiver - the go to guy who gets it done. You have someone who does that and because it isn't who the fan base wants, they complain. unreal

I am not disagreeing with some of what you say but I am disagreeing that you have to force feed a ball to X.

I don’t care if you are Terrell Owens, Michael Irvin, Ty Hill, AJ Brown, etc, you don’t stay locked onto to them the whole route and try and force a ball into triple coverage to them or getting big time bracketed when, say, in the red zone, you have a 6-5 behemoth in Young single covered and you don’t throw a jump ball to him vs trying to squeeze a pass into Restrepo that had no chance of a being completed.
