Update on Shelton Henderson

He didn't make the nonchalant comment in his presser regarding the Boozers and keeping the best talent home for no reason. That was always in the back of everyone's mind, including those making the decisions and the ones that felt they were close to landing them originally and funding the whole thing. Throw Moran's name into the conversation as an assistant... they painted their own picture and drew up their own expectations.

Its no different than the expectations that follow HS football coaches getting hired as college assistants and everyone, including the HC hiring them, expecting to get kids from that school. It's 75% of the reason they get the jobs that they get.
Moran is a much more pivotal relationship to the boozer family than Jai Lucas.

Lucas wasn't bringing any players to Miami, unless he had Duke's blessing. It's called professional courtesy. Coaching is a small fraternity and believe it or not, a lot of those guys are cool with each other. Last thing a young coach like Lucas wants to do is burn bridges with other coaches in the profession on his first head coaching job.

What? Didn't we finish 2nd to Duke the first time for the Boozers and Lucas was pointed to as the reason we lost out? So if I actually believe that he is the elite recruiter he's being sold as, he cost Miami the first time around and then couldn't make good when he got another shot.
This notion that Jai was the reason twins are at Duke is wild. Doesn't matter who was recruiting them, long as Duke didn't **** the bed this season, twins were going to end up there because of their dad. In the end, once mom gave them her blessing, dad's preference outweighed mom's. Miami made it intersting, but Duke would've disowned Carlos had his kids gone elsewhere.

Agree on the first point but would be ridiculous and frankly, shortsighted to believe that our admin actually thought he was bringing those guys with him.

I don't give a **** what "our admin actually thought", but I know that some of our boosters thought it was a very real possibility.

I've posted this elsewhere but who is officially hired? Pastrana? Moran? Baker?

We have an equal number of hired assistant coaches, high school recruit verbals, and Portal commits...

Correct. They were already signed. Duke is a final four team. This is a non-story.

You saying it's a non-story doesn't make it so.

We have had multiple occurrences that give rise to valid concerns about hiring a Super Recruiter and "tripling" our NIL budget.

Okay - tell me where I was going with what I was saying. What's your assumption, here?
You seem very passionate about Lucas.

Me, I’m tired of close, and we tried, got us at the table. So I’m unlikely to find that result appealing in basketball, either. Sign them or don’t. Win or lose.Let’s see what Lucas has…

I never suspected Lucas would raid Duke’s class after being allowed to leave early for Miami.

The Boozer discussion of simultaneously being second for the twins, while having no chance at all under L is interesting and if we never had a chance it was Nike, Duke and legacy related

Yup totally

Duke is in the Final Four, and even though Flagg is assuredly jumping, I think Maluach and Kneuppel stay. They literally lose Flagg, Sion James, Gillis, and maybe Proctor if he jumps (unless there's an unexpected portal entry out of the young crew).

The only reason any of Henderson or the Boozer Twins would leave is if they think someone else is gonna eventually beat them out. Otherwise, you find yourself on a young and talented roster with opportunities to win the ACC multiple times and make deep runs in the tourney.

The carrot we dangled out there for Henderson and/or the Boozer's to come to Miami was to be stars here and for more PT and to be the focus from day one forward, albeit as the centerpiece of a rebuild. It wasn't enough. And you can't make these kids' minds up for themselves, especially after all of them had already committed to Duke, and their trajectory keeps going up while we're starting on a rebuild.

I'm sure Jai asked the question and sold those kids as hard as he could on helping him rebuild things here. That's something. It wouldn't have happened if we still had Coach L. We wouldn't have been in a position to even ask the question if Henderson/Boozer x2 wanted to jump ship and come here.
Malauch and Knuepple are both top 10 picks this year. 0 chance either comes back.

When Mario was hired here, he didn’t land the majority of his Oregon recruits. He got Kelly & Moss but missed out on the lineman who went to Texas & that five star tackle. Some others he pursued that I am forgetting.

Jai wasn’t the head coach at Duke — the Henderson possibility was unique because they attended the same high school.

The Boozer brothers were a pipe dream. I hope some of you guys don’t freak out when Columbus HS five star recruit Jaxon Richardson chooses Michigan State instead of playing for his former head coach.

I'm actually not. I'm just sick of everyone bellyaching about him. If you call that passionate then I dunno what to tell you.

I'm not happy with *just* being close or at the table either. But realistically, that's a step of where you have to get to in the overall process. You're missing my point on this though - with Coach L if he were still here, the question of if Henderson/Boozers x2 wouldn't have had the ability to be realistically asked. They'd have likely laughed if Coach L and staff would have called at this stage. With Jai, they probably at least answered the phone and had the conversation. We missed under the circumstances, so it is what it is.

I wasn't optimistic he would pull it off, but at least we could have the discussion of getting one of those guys.

We finished 2nd for the Boozer's. In their initial recruitment. If Coach L was still here, he wouldn't have been making another phone call to possibly get them to flip, nor even had any kind of link to Henderson. With Jai, at least we had the chance to pick up the phone and ask. That's not some monumental thing, especially since we didn't land any of them, but that's indicitive of what I hope to be true for the future - that Jai will have inroads for recruiting bigtime talent in places that Coach L and staff could not.

It's incremental progress in this instance, but it's still a recognizable yet nuanced thing.

OK - that's your take. If I'm wrong, and there's a better than zero chance they do come back, I'll own it.

I think if Duke does indeed win the title, then it's a no-brainer that they go to the league and I'd question their logic if they didn't.

The assumption that Lucas is “progress” over L in terms of recruiting is insanely, like INSANELY, premature.

As much as I have my doubts on the hiring of Lucas, I think it’s safe to say that he’s currently the better recruiter of the two.

Coach L wasn’t doing much recruiting at Miami last few years. He left the bulk of the legwork to his assistants. They identified talent. Recruited. Coach L would come in near the end, evaluate and give the thumbs up or down and then offer would come. Coach L would help close.

Where I think Coach L separates himself from Lucas is in the Xs & Os. We’ll find out soon enough.

I think it’s too early to say an assistant who has coached at three of the easiest sell programs in the country is anything. I’m not even trying to knock him, we just literally have no idea.

Players don’t flip often in college basketball, so Coach L flipping them would be unheard of…

It’s a new hire that people have opinions on… so people will discuss both sides of it… and on CIS there will be bellyaching and *****ing about it …. Some of that comes from Miami’s inept hiring process history…

We Miami fans have been given 3 gifts: one from Richt, Gino and L…

We got Manny, JD and a coach that’s never been a head coach. No home runs. None! We then canned Manny and had 1 other choice… the history repeats itself and it sucks.

This is not disliking Manny or Mario or JD or Lucas… it is about not having a serious athletic department.

Now with Lucas, if Louisville can spin their program around quickly, so can we. Let’s give the dude a chance, BUT we also have to stop the oversell and excuses we see and have had with other coaching changes .. JD didn’t have enough time … Mario could walk on water…. Because it sets the board and coach up for mockery and rightfully so…
