Guys please check out the online petition to build a dual MLS/UM Stadium adjacent to Marlins Park. This would be ideal since the parking, water, power and other key infrastructure is already in place. UM is on board with this and is trying to persuade MLS/Beckham to go this route and build a 40k seat stadium. There are many key politicians on board with this as well. If this works out, UM will put some skin in the game. Read the press release, read the petition, sign it and forward it on if you like!

Lastly, the Marlins are NOT involved in this at all. They would not profit from this as far as I have heard.

Up until now, David Beckham has been courting politicians -- to no luck -- for a Major League Soccer stadium site. Now, some of the elected officials appear to be courting him.

A group of current and former Miami-Dade County and city of Miami leaders have thrown their support behind a petition asking to build the stadium -- with the University of Miami's college football team -- in Little Havana.

"Support Beckham soccer stadium at former Orange Bowl site, and bring UM football back home!" reads the petition's title. (Notably, the petition mentions the beloved Orange Bowl, not the less-popular Marlins Park.)

It was endorsed Thursday by a cadre of politicians who have had reservations about the two previous locations proposed by Miami Beckham United: the county-owned southwest corner of PortMiami and the city-owned Museum Park and deepwater boat slip.

One of them, County Commissioner Xavier Suarez, said no one wants to see Beckham change his mind about opening his expansion franchise here -- and many people would like to see the Miami Hurricanes playing closer to their Coral Gables campus. Suarez first endorsed the Marlins location last week.
"I think we have to roll out the red carpet for these guys," he said of Beckham and his investors. "They were twice led in the wrong direction, and I think that's an ideal site."

Also promoting the petition, according to a news release, are Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez (the county commissioner's son), former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, and Coral Gables Commissioner Vince Lago. Francis Suarez and the rest of the city commission took a symbolic vote in Beckham's support earlier Thursday.

"This is a great solution that in theory should please many different constituencies," the four politicians said in their joint statement. "Beckham deserves the best our community has to offer, and we firmly believe this site would set his team up for success in our community long in to the future, while bringing the passion for Canes football back to where it belongs."

Talks between Beckham's group and UM broke down recently over the boat slip site, which was deemed too small to accommodate football. While MLS wants a 20,000-25,000-seat stadium, UM is interested in a larger capacity of 40,000.

Beckham's longtime business partner, American Idol creator Simon Fuller, has dismissed the mostly city-owned parcels next to the Miami Marlins' ballpark as "spiritually tainted" by the public financing deal for the baseball team.

But Xavier Suarez said he doesn't think that's the case -- and that if it is, the government's role should be to turn a perceived liability into an asset.

"The idea that it's tainted is all backwards," he said. "It's a fantastic site for a multi-stadium facility that allows us to compete for international events."

Beckham is an idiot if he puts a stadium in that barrio. Zero chance of success there. If his group has any sense they'll tell Miami to kick rocks and find another city.

That's my guess as to what happens.

Gotta love the fact that the Mayor suggests the boat slip idea, gets Beckham and co. all excited, then shoots it down a few weeks later.

If I'm Beckham, that's all the signal I need to GTFOO this Banana Republic.

And now they want to totally **** him over even more by trying to convince him to build a 45k stadium in a barrio instead of a 20k stadium on the beach.

Unreal.

Don't get me wrong: as a UM fan, I hope Beckham is dumb enough to say yes to this. But realistically there is no way in ****.

Just sign the **** petition you ******* huevones. If it happens, great for UM. Beckham is a dumb**** if he builds a stadium there, but what the **** we gotta lose?

Win/Win for us.

Sign the **** you pendejos

I am not going to support this mess so UM could be the laughing stock of college football with a 40,000 seat stadium as if were a D2 school. If it's not 55,000 or more forget it.

I'm still not understanding how this soccer stadium proposal gets morphed into a reasonable American football facility worthy of being the home of a major 1-FBS program. The only renderings I've seen clearly show a soccer stadium that's way to small for 1-FBS football. Article after article talks about an MLS stadium around 20,000. If they were proposing a 50,000 seat football stadium where the MLS could play soccer, I'd understand.

You are correct i can't understand it either. Why would UM want to play in a 40,000 seat stadium.
Honestly, I haven't even seen any article talking about a proposal for even 40K. The largest I have seen is 25K. And, I'm talking about from the people who are proposing this project.

Dude I would rather have 15,000 empty seats rather than playing in that mini stadium so UM could be the joke of college football. What recruit are you going to sell your D2/HS stadium to? Man get real.

Sorry to tell you, but we are already the joke of college football.

Sign the petition and support the U!

What's the point? We can't fill up Sun life or any large stadium. Why pretend to be something we are not? I live in PA/MD, but I fly down once a year to support my canes. An empty stadium is depressing. We aren't an SEC school. We are the U. A 40k stadium would give us a better home field advantage. We could still play FSU/Florida/ND/Clemson at Sun life. Heck, if we filled up all 40k seats every year I'm sure there would be no problems adding a seat or two down the road. That's just my two cents....

The World Cup in 2022 is being stripped from Qatar and going to be awarded to the US. I don't think they will hold matches in a 20,000 seat stadium. The city knows that. Beckham knows that.

If this happens at 40,000 there will be two stadiums capable of hosting big time international soccer matches, in a city like Miami, making it undeniable as one of the top seeds. Not only would this guarantee the WC coming here, but it also brings Miami closer to being able to even consider bidding for a summer Olympics.

If this happens it's not only good for us because we return to our home land, but can be a huge boost for the city of Miami in terms of large-scale international sporting events.

If you can honestly call yourself a canes fan and from sofla, you're pretty short sighted to NOT think this is a home fvking run for the canes and Miami. Sign the **** petition and shut up.

"Get real"? Because it's so much worse to have a full 40K seat stadium than an empty, and lifeless, fan unfriendly, stadium almost in a different county than the school? As for a "joke", I guess you don't hear the constant snide comments from sports commentators covering our games, from opposing fans, from our own fans, including lots of photos about how our stadium is always empty? How is that any less damaging than having a small stadium for our small school for the smaller games>
