UCF’s Scott Frost (2.0) hires Dorito

Golden didn't fire Duhnofrio because he was trying to get fired. He was miserable at UM at the end and wanted out but wouldn't walk away without his buyout. Golden is actually pretty sharp and knows **** well his buddy sucks llama nuts. And he changed his defensive philosophy a lot after his time in the NFL.

He did us no favors by keeping NOD around.

Golden gets no props.

Later for him and his tie.

I don’t buy this at all. It took him years to rebuild his reputation after the Miami debacle. You’re essentially saying he sabotaged his own career by purposely keeping D’Onofrio around to lose him games. Even if he hated Miami and wanted to leave, wouldn’t the smart thing to do be to win as much as possible and parlay the Miami job to another head coaching position? Even a lateral move would have not killed his career momentum.

Clarification,: Presidents of Corporations, Universities, etc

Apologies to anyone offended.

May as well change that to Safety coach once he backs the backers off the line 7-10 yards on goal line.

Alex Grinch fell off. Dude was some supposed to be the next big thing a few years ago as a DC now he's at UCF working with Dorito.
Mike Leach was better for DC's (and S&CC's) than anyone wants to admit because he was THE Air Raid guy.

Grinch, Arnett, McNeill... I know there was someone else in that lot.

I was just about to suggest this. Its tough to pinpoint exactly when Al Golden was looking to better-deal us, whether it was before or after the Shapiro scandal. But he was. When he interviewed for PSU, it was obvious. Its possible that he made the "How do I get out of this?" decision after not getting the PSU job.

If he wanted to succeed at Miami, firing Mark was the easiest choice. ANY hire likely would've been an improvement and it would've repaired some goodwill with the admin and fan base. Was he just loyal? I guess you can make that argument that an otherwise shrewd, smooth-talking guy with a degree in sports psychology had to learn such a dumb lesson.

But the other is equally plausible. Keeping him on staff allowed him to get a couple million AND leave Miami with a scapegoat, insulating his resume and preserving his reputation for a fresh start somewhere else. Doing the position coach thing for the next several years meant no hard conversations with D'Nofrio about not hiring him for his next staff.

Its a very cynical approach to career advancement, but it makes sense if a guy really has a holistic/big picture mindset. He's an NFL DC now; the ball is entirely back in his court to do whatever he wants at any level of football going forward.

I was pointing out how odd it is that he REFUSED to cut ties with D’Onofrio when he was at Miami but as soon as he left, his bff has been nowhere near him.
Loyalty is funny thing. According to the board, D Sniff cost us key recruits, yet he is still here.

Gotta assume it hurt his reputation too… stubbornness in not making good decisions. Credit to him he went back to the grind and reinvented himself. Still hasn’t gotten another crack at a HC job but I’m sure he could’ve if he didn’t want to go back to the NFL

I don't think he wanted a HC job in college anymore. ND fan told me Golden wasn't required to go out and recruit as much as the rest of the staff did because he's over most of that. I think that's why a lot of the coaches never go back to college once they get to the NFL

I definitely worded that incorrectly. I don't know this for a fact, but I have to imagine the school asked him to fire his buddy. I think he dared them to fire him by keeping him around. And at the end I think he knew how bad things were and knew even if he did fire him his reputation had already taken a hit.

I couldn’t imagine a steeper drop off in the coolness factor for a HS recruit than Freeman to Golden.
