Golden didn't fire Duhnofrio because he was trying to get fired. He was miserable at UM at the end and wanted out but wouldn't walk away without his buyout. Golden is actually pretty sharp and knows **** well his buddy sucks llama nuts. And he changed his defensive philosophy a lot after his time in the NFL.

I don’t buy this at all. It took him years to rebuild his reputation after the Miami debacle. You’re essentially saying he sabotaged his own career by purposely keeping D’Onofrio around to lose him games. Even if he hated Miami and wanted to leave, wouldn’t the smart thing to do be to win as much as possible and parlay the Miami job to another head coaching position? Even a lateral move would have not killed his career momentum.

I was just about to suggest this. Its tough to pinpoint exactly when Al Golden was looking to better-deal us, whether it was before or after the Shapiro scandal. But he was. When he interviewed for PSU, it was obvious. Its possible that he made the "How do I get out of this?" decision after not getting the PSU job.
If he wanted to succeed at Miami, firing Mark was the easiest choice. ANY hire likely would've been an improvement and it would've repaired some goodwill with the admin and fan base. Was he just loyal? I guess you can make that argument that an otherwise shrewd, smooth-talking guy with a degree in sports psychology had to learn such a dumb lesson.
But the other is equally plausible. Keeping him on staff allowed him to get a couple million AND leave Miami with a scapegoat, insulating his resume and preserving his reputation for a fresh start somewhere else. Doing the position coach thing for the next several years meant no hard conversations with D'Nofrio about not hiring him for his next staff.
Its a very cynical approach to career advancement, but it makes sense if a guy really has a holistic/big picture mindset. He's an NFL DC now; the ball is entirely back in his court to do whatever he wants at any level of football going forward.
