2022 had to happen to get the current version of Mario Cristobal we have now. He had to fail hard to see the error of his ways and embrace modernity. If we had somehow managed to go 8-5 that first year, we’d still be stuck in that rut. We’d be watching our new transfer quarterback, Cade McNamara try to lead our offense to score just enough to pull out a 21-17 win.

Could Mario have just skipped the hard part and won right away? Sure but he’s stubborn like a lot of coaches. He had to witness first hand that his original plan was straight diarrhea that needed to be flushed and replaced with something aggressive and more suiting to winning football games in 2024. So yeah, it took him a bit but he’s come around. His quarterback leads the FBS in passing and his OC only called 8(!) first half run plays in a game against an inferior g5 opponent. “Imposing your will” takes a back seat to scoring a **** ton of points. Miami is a better program because of it.

So , Mario’s first year record had nothing to do with lack of talent and the complete **** show Mandy Diaz left behind?

Part lack of talent and part Cristobal. Most of us were extremely disappointed when he hired Gattis. Go look at the number of posts where people hoped Cristobal would go for more of a west coast style offense and he’d get away from tuff n” fisical football. The Cristo-bros defended the choice and said it’s better to force his system on the players instead of adapting to the skill sets available. It was only after he faceplanted with his preferred offense that he adapted his thinking and hired Dawson. If he does go with a new offensive philosophy as soon as he is hired , then it’s probably a 7 win season in year 1 and maybe 8-9 wins in year 2 due to the overall lack of talent. I think we would be around the same place we are now record and depth wise in year 3, we just don’t have the sour taste of the last two seasons lingering. Maybe the one difference is Jeremiah Smith likes what he sees on offense over that 2 year span and we land him. Ultimately though I don’t think we’re in a substantially different place today. But to the direct question- not all the blame for the past two years falls on Diaz’s recruiting.

Head Coach is responsible for the roster. The portal was not closed. He crowned TVD when he got here, saw TVD, Jake and Curri Hive in 2022, and did not recruit over them for 2023...Course corrected for 2024 by attacking the portal with big NIL for difference makers and here we are... we went from TVD to Cam and Gore to Baron...

This is a bull**** narrative. "The portal was not closed". "He crowned TVD when he got here". What a load of crap. You can ******* take the crown away at any point, let's not act like it was an ironclad contract.

Mario did try to recruit over them for 2023. After a lot of back-channeling, the guy Mario wanted didn't transfer.

And "attacking the Portal with big NIL for difference makers" almost didn't work out at QB. If Cam had stayed in the draft, our starter would be Reese Hufflepuff. We had no VIABLE backup plan to which we could have pivoted at the last minute, all the "actual 1B" guys had already chosen to go elsewhere.

Mario's laser-focused recruiting was unlucky for us (at QB) in 2023 and lucky for us in 2024. That is all.

the football gods definitely had pity on us

That’s an extremely fair take, Squid! I’m just not so sure that a new HC coming in and taking over a floundering Mandy Diaz built football team was going to find much success in his first 2 years after inheriting that mess regardless of who we brought in to run the team. The team was just terrible when Mario took over. On paper it looked like Mario may have hit it out of the park when he hired the reigning Broyle award winner in Gattis to run the offense and brought in Steele and Strong to run the defense. It didn’t take long to realize those hires were mistakes. Especially the Gattis hire. Those were big mistakes but to Mario’s credit he got it fixed and got it fixed fast. Now all Mario has to do is get out of the way and let players play and just win ballgames.

At some point you have to move on. You're too old for this.
