Total Revenues by Team

Those who care more, make more.

So what was Miami's revenue stream during the title years?

I have come to terms with the incessant need to bash everything, but you gotta at least put some thought into it.

it was certainly higher than what it is now. Being a small private school certainly does not help but UM's athletic administration is selling one of the strongest national brands so coming in where they are is unacceptable

Care to provide any facts?

I can assure you that we are making more now in the ACC than we were in the BE. And had we stayed in the BE, we'd have been in a dire situation right about now.

So in terms of money from conference affiliation and TV contracts alone, we're much better now than ever before.

Add that to the fact that we're making 2+ mil/yr more off our deal at Sun Life than we were making off the Orange Bowl..

The U didn't take advantage of capitalizing on their fame and fortune back when we were dominating CFB. We should have done exactly what ND did.

Not a chance in **** we could have done what ND did. No one outside of ND could have done it. Otherwise, you'd think teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, etc would have done it long ago.

I'm sure that is the case. I know last year UofL received about 3 million dollars from being a member of the Big East, next year they will receive ACC money which is closer to 20 million. That should put UofL way over the 100 million mark and maybe even bump them up into the top 10 AD's in the nation in regards to revenue.

No, we had a window of opportunity and Sam Jankovich even went down that path prior to joining the Big east back in 89/90. We drove a large viewership at the time. You either hated us or loved us. Similar to ND.
The big schools tied to a large conference couldn't get out of their conference deals.

And Jankovich ultimately decided against it for a reason. It was never a viable option. UM never commanded the viewership that ND did. ND retains a viewership even when they suck; our viewership is contingent on us winning.

My understanding of what went down is it didn't meet the money we would garner long-term with adding our basketball as well to the BE. I want to say it was with NBC, but I really don't remember the specifics.

I'm sure that's part of the reason. But another part is obviously that our TV viewership for football would never reach the level of NDs. They had nearly a century of sustained success, over which time they built a loyal national following, particularly among Catholics spread across the US. UM had a decade of dominance, (actually, 7 years, since this all went down in 1990), over which time we built a microwave dynasty that brought viewers only as long as we continued to win.

FWIW Miami finished 6th in the country in ratings for teams with at least 11 games televised last season.

*st
LSU
ND
FSU
Oklahoma
Miami

Miami was also one of only 17 teams to have ten games or more televised.

Ratings include only games on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and FOX Sports 1. Data for other networks are unavailable (e.g., Big Ten Network, Pac-12 Network, Longhorn Network), and this boosts averages for teams playing on those networks since ratings are generally low (e.g., Michigan on the Big 10 Network and Texas on the Longhorn Network).

When we were an independent and the NCAA controlled and limited the number of TV games, we did well compare to others. We got ratings and networks wanted us. We kept whole payout with out conference to share. Plus it helped our recruiting because kids wanted to be on TV. Today, high school games have national coverage. We were never big enough to get our own TV deal like ND-- too bad.

Amazing the discrepancy between Texas A&M and Texas. Have to believe that is narrowing.

At one time, Texas A & M alumni were the richest in the nation. Their sports revenue may lag behind Texas, but their donor base is second to none.

That's very interesting info right there.

We get much more exposure than it feels like.

Been saying it for years.

A great coach - a very top coach - NEVER costs a University a single dime. Regardless of what they're paid.

A great coach - a winning coach - earns all his money himself, and earns the University a ton of money. Bama's coach doesn't cost the University of Alabama a single dime.

Just like a good salesman. He doesn't cost a company a dime. He makes his own salary, and lots for the company.

The intellectual geniuses that run this University - to be supposedly so smart - are some real world dumbasses.

So IYO, how would a "great coach" make Miami more money? They have revenue sharing in the conference, they're on TV more than 85%+ of schools, winning more games and increased attendance, that's suspect considering the attendance in the title years, so where's it going to come from?

I'd be interested to see a link to the #s. Seems like we had a lot of games on ESPN2 and ESPNU, more than teams like OSU, LSU, FSU, Oklahoma, etc.

There is obviously a pretty strong correlation between top dollar programs and and on field performance. Not perfectly, but no real surprises either. I think another breakdown that could be interesting is a ranking by school of overall dollars to the number of alumni, or even student population.

Probably due to our ranking and our opponent's ranking. Those teams were top ranked every week of the season (IIRC LSU fell but was still in the top 15).

Miami can't outbid mid tier programs for coaches let alone the elite ones. And just paying big money to the HC wouldn't even be enough, you have to pay a lot for the type of assistants they want (no Jethro's), elite facilities and resources (i.e private jets), etc. The AD just does't have that type of money.

Even if we somehow landed "a very to coach" attendance would still suck for every game outside of FSU in most years. That has always been the case even when we were elite.

Same damned way they made money before! When you are winning, you're selling merchandise, you're selling tickets - especially when you play a halfway decent team, and there were significant enrollment increases when Miami was on top. Increases year after year. The alumni were energized and they were writing checks. It was an exciting thing to be talked about year-round, but especially in the fall and through the NC game.

I don't care where you lived, or who were the top teams, or who was supposed to be the Team of the Century that year - there was always whispers and talk about Miami and what they were going to have to say about the matter.

We were Giant Killers. And there's revenue in Giant Killers.
