Tommy Kinsler (OL commit) senior HL

Different prospects. Kinsler has played offensive line most of his football career. McLaughlin was new to football. McLaughlin is probably more comparable to Frankie Tinilau - raw, not a lot of tape, etc.
I didn't compare them as apples-to-apples prospects; I said I loved McLaughlin's potential. I was really optimistic when he early enrolled as I though he needed it as much as anyone.

I am no OL recruit analysis expert, but it seems that OL and QB are the hardest to actually project. And that is both from high school to college, and from college to the NFL.

McLaughlin got thrown into the fire against Pitt and had some really good reps far sooner than he should have seen the field. He should have never been in that position and was fed to the lions. Held up pretty well outside of I think one rep he got beat badly…but who doesn’t at that stage?

Some OL take a few years

Not suggesting he will be an impact guy for us but he won’t need to be. Lord knows we know what it looks like having zero depth on the OL
I agree with you. This is his 3rd year in the program and I don’t think anyone expects him to play at all this year. my expectation is simple, push for 2nd RT. If developmental freshman are immediately passing him that’s not a look. I’m all for development but 3rd/4th year we gotta be sniffing the second team I don’t think that’s asking for too much.

100%

All I know is we had to use him at friggin left tackle last year and now that Mario and Mirabal are here I am hopeful that nonsense never happens again

Last years oline was a nightmare. The spring second team oline had me relapsing lol I’m hoping that unit is healthy. Physically we’ll look drastically different in fall. Hallelujah

Just for me but I’m looking at Matt Lee as maybe our most important off-season addition. Having a legit center finally.
I just hope he lives up to the hype. People talk about Jacurri having a rough spring game, I thought Matt Lee had a horrible spring game based on what we were told. Moten ate his *** up. I’m giving him a pass for now. Working next to two guards that absolutely should never see the field doesn’t help but man he has to be better.

Tommy Kinsler is a massive individual. His ceiling is about as high as anybody.

How in God’s name did the scouting sites rate this kid only a three star? Frankie I get given he’s so new to the sport and had little to no tape. But Kinsler should not be considered a project. He could probably step in in a pinch this season and should be ready to go as a redshirt freshman. Insane physical traits AND a football player.

He almost looks raw with his technique which is fine considering the coaching he will get. As a run blocker yes, as a pass blocker we have to wait and see. But he is a flat monster! I’ll say this Grover, Cooper was in a similar boat and I thought towards the end he was the best lineman we had. Two years from now, the starting lineman will be between 320- and 360. That’s huge

Whose 360 on the team? Could of sworn I saw something about kinsler being 340 and Cooper being in better shape this year.

Him dropping UiF for us didn’t help

I definitely didn’t expect to see Cooper end up contributing the way he did last year so maybe Kinsler can as well but he absolutely looks like a project. Not as big of a project like Frankie but still a project. The great news is that is a great canvas as a prospect, gigantic and can run.

In the run blocking he looks like a monster and when he gets his hands on you, you are done for, can get to the second level with ease. The problem I saw though there was that he missed a ton of blocks on his highlight on the first level and just ran and destroyed someone on the second. It worked out pretty well in those plays but something I noticed. Pass blocking wise he looked decent but not great, really just handled smaller guys who didn’t really even try to test him on the outside.

Agreed which, and hey I get it it’s spring sunshine time, but hearing good things already hopefully points to him putting in tons of work in the off-season. Or maybe the highlights weren’t exactly his best work either
