Tip of the cap to Clawson

Dave Clawson is a very good coach, and to win at Wake Forest is one of the toughest jobs in America. You are talking the smallest school in all of power 5, and one of the smallest overall in the FBS. Wake is in a smaller town in NC where they have 5 other in state FBS schools to compete against in recruiting home grown talent, while not having many resources to recruit nationally. Wake also has the smallest stadium in the FBS at 31,500 capacity. Having said all of those, I never wanted him in Miami. He is from NY and Wake is as far South as he has ever coached. He would definite have to hire assistants with recruiting ties in Florida.

Not sure he would have been a fit in Miami. Unless you are okay with 2* WR, no big names
You think he wouldn't be able to recruit? Miss me with this nonsense. He gets 2 star guys at Wake because that's all he can get. You think that with the proper institutional support, he wouldn't try to upgrade the talent at his disposal?

It's like people that didn't think L would be able to recruit, because "He only gets second tier guys at George Mason". L recruited like gangbusters once he got here, because he had access to guys that would have thrown his offer in the garbage, if he was still at George Mason.

Winston Salem isn't that small, for NC at least. Was the wealthiest area in all of NC for a long long time, some serious old money in the area. Tobacco money. I remember you could still smoke in Hanes mall not all that long ago, years after it was stopped everywhere else indoors. Want to guess why? Because tobacco money built everything in that area.

Yep, I know all about Winston Salem, Old Salem, RJR, and the entire area. While "not that small in NC" it is compared to most other power 5 areas across the Country. There are a few High Schools in the area (East Forsyth, Dudley) that produce talent, though I'm not sure what has happened to the talent once at Carver and Andrews. In NC alone, Raleigh (NC State), Durham (Duke), and Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) all have bigger FBS schools in bigger areas, with Columbia (South Carolina) just across the state line. Then you also have much bigger FBS schools in Carolina, East Carolina, and App. State to recruit against in one State. That is a lot of competition for an academic first school with the smallest power 5 enrollment, which is one of the smallest in the Country. I mean they have the smallest stadium in the FBS and can't pack it with fans, even this year tickets were easy to come by. I mean look at it this way, NC has 7 FBS schools, 4 power 5 schools, and 18 total D1 schools. That's a lot for a state the size of NC. Only other states with 7 or more FBS schools are Texas (12), Ohio (8), California (7), and Florida (7). The only other states with 4 or more power 5 schools are Texas (5) and California (4).

Was just saying Winston is a pretty big city for here. I grew up splitting time between Winston and Carrboro.

Exactly. Jimmy Johnson maximized the talent he had available at Oklahoma State, same with Erickson at Washington State.

LOL, OSU was buying players when JJ was there, and JJ struggled in recruiting His 1st year here, lost quite a few targets. And JJ didn't adapt to ****, JJ was used to coaching high caliber players

Also, Erickson couldn't recruit worth a ****, and it showed, look at the state He left the program in...Golden recruited better than Erickson.

These comparisons and revisionist history are annoying, all to make a barely above .500 for His career, off brand coach look better than He is, sheesh.

OSU wasn't doing nearly the work as places like OU and Nebraska were. Also keep in mind, Jimmy inherited a program that had been decimated by NCAA sanctions(Hence why he couldn't do the things that his predecessors had done) Keep in mind, Jimmy was getting PILEDRIVEN by OU and Nebraska back then. The fact that OSU, a program that hadn't done much of anything before Jimmy was a decent program by the time he had left was a minor miracle. Erickson may have been a mediocre at best recruiter, but his offensive innovations are still being seen throughout football. Guess what, he had to be innovative to win at places like Wazzu, where you aren't going to get high end talent.

Keep believing that record is the end all be all of evaluating a coach. Wade Phillips has a better record than Bill Parcells. Guys that take rebuilds tend to have crappier records than guys that take better jobs, that are already on the upswing. Jimmy took over multiple rebuilds. Clawson isn't Jimmy, but he has taken multiple rebuilds and completed them. You can't argue with that kind of success. He's won at multiple levels at places that have not experienced success regularly.

No I don’t think he would be a good recruiter, dude had zero track record for being a good/great recruiter. He’s an excellent coach. And if he was a good recruiter and good coach he’d be elsewhere by now and not Wake

Let's be honest here, "Good Recruiters" tend to be guys at places where you have the resources to recruit. Clawson can easily get guys on staff that can recruit, his ability to build a culture around player development and attention to detail is what makes him an attractive candidate. Guys that can win at multiple places, when they don't have the resources are going to draw attention because those are guys with relatively low failure probabilities. Clawson may not turn into the next Nick Saban, but he won't be Manny Diaz or Randy Shannon either. The worst case with him at a place like Miami is a well coached team that doesn't beat itself, guys are developed. That's 9-10 wins per year right there, with few stupid losses. Keep in mind, even mediocre recruiters tend to get talent at Miami.

It's all a moot point, because Mario is here and he's going to load Miami up with talent. Hopefully he builds a staff that can maximize said talent.

Gotcha, yeah not that small in that area, but small in the big picture. I grew up in the Hickory area and spent a lot of time in Winston. My sister played tennis at Wake also, so lots of Wake sporting events when I was a teenager. Still attend Football/Basketball games at times
