Tip of the cap to Clawson

Clawson took over in 2014. He went 3-9 his first 2 years at Wake but since then, hasn't won less than 7 games in any season outside of the abbreviated Covid season last year......reaching 10 wins this season.

Before he arrived, the last time Wake won 7 games was 2008. I give the guy credit for making that program relevant.
this is pretty much the story at every single stop of his head coaching career. at every stop he's taken a dumpster fire team and ended up leading them to at least one double digit win season. that's a pretty impressive resume as a program builder.

This is an interesting topic.

Why do I think this?

Because I always hear about these coaches that get their players to overachieve, but then I ask myself, “self, is this necessarily the right kind of coach for the University of Miami“

Why do I ask myself this?

Because the kind of coach that gets the most out of mid level talent, it’s not necessarily the best coach for someone that’s going to be coaching a roster full of more well regarded players, many of whom come from South Florida.

Somehow, I think it takes a different kind of approach for the type of talent we will be getting at Miami, versus the type of coaching that’s done in the Big Ten for mid-level schools, or places like Wake Forest.

I think it’s a completely different approach, and doesn’t necessarily translate to Miami.
I don't disagree, but you have to see the attraction. For years we've watched our talented teams play sloppy and lose to less talented teams. It's hard to watch that and not think "if we just had a HC who could get 80% of what these kids are capable of..."

They won’t have another Sam Hartman for awhile. He was very good for them

With the portal they will...and im thinking he redshirted as well.

They recruit pretty solidly. I remember Hartman fromt he netflix series qb1 the same show with Justin Fields, Tate Martell, Jake Fromm never thought he would be this good.

When the University of Richmond won the 1-AA natty in 2008, Mike London coached the team, but all those players were Clawson's.

From Wikipedia:

After Fordham, Clawson became the head coach at the University of Richmond. He served as coach from the 2004 season until the end of the 2007 season, and was the 32nd football coach at the school. His career coaching record at Richmond was 29–20. This ranks him seventh at Richmond in total wins and fifth at Richmond in winning percentage.[6]

At Richmond, he was awarded Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) Coach of the Year twice. Clawson is credited with re-energizing the Richmond program. After going 3–8 in 2004, the Spiders went 9–4 to win the Atlantic 10 Conference[2] and made the playoffs the following year. In 2007, Richmond won their conference again, going 11–3 before eventually losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Appalachian State.[7]

Uhh what?

Sam Hartman was a class of 2018 recruit, he redshirted his Sophomore year in 2019 & 2020 was the Covid season.

Also, Wake has only won 10+ games once in their entire school history, that was back in 06 under Jim Grobe.
Fam they have a 7th year senior per the broadcast during the game.

Kid plays on defense lol

Doesn't mean a coach can't adapt..
Exactly. Jimmy Johnson maximized the talent he had available at Oklahoma State, same with Erickson at Washington State. They were able to bring the things that helped them win at those schools and combine it with what Miami offered. It's almost like our fans think that a coach can't be more than one thing. The one common thread that comes to mind when you think of guys like Clawson and Bill Clark is that they are willing to view things differently. It's tough to win at places where you don't have every conceivable resource. You have to be a risk taker, a person that looks for every possible advantage, a guy that pays attention to detail. Those are traits that separate elite coaches from the pack. Up until this last hire, Miami wasn't going to go out and pay top end money for a guy, so you needed to find a guy that had a relatively low failure probability. Guys like Bill Clark and Dave Clawson are guys that may have not gotten Miami to the CFP, but their floor was **** good. You think Clark or Clawson loses to this garbage FSU team? Nope. You think Clark or Clawson loses to FIU with Miami talent? No.

Clawson is an excellent coach. I used to believe in those "culture" fits or "this coach won't be able to handle those types of athlete" rhetoric but I don't anymore. Players want to win, players want to get better and perform, thats what Clawson does. Met him years ago at U of Richmond, saw first hand what he is capable of. Don't worry though we have Mario now.

What porsters may not realize is that Wake is the smallest school in the ACC, only three to four thousand students, with very high academic standards located in a smaller city. Very tough to win there.
I 100% could not care less about Wake Forest.

I hope the next time we play them they give up football.

THERE DT WAS A 7TH YEAR SR...AND I THINK HE WAS PLAYING NEXT TO A 6TH YEAR SR.

Them mfers were Scott Patchans hs classmates.

I'd like to see him come back and give them another good run to be honest.

I don't watch a lot of tv so that would've been interesting. However he was AMAZING for them this year and in this day and age you might be very right. A good QB sitting behind a very good QB just might be intrigued. Clawson does an amazing job for the resources and constraints on his job. one of the better coaching jobs year in and year out for sure.

But man, Hartman has been VERY GOOD for the last couple of years for them. It's like catching lighting in a bottle again if they can replicate. I equate this years Wake to the Jay Cutler Vandy senior senior season.

Clawson was definitely my #1 pick for HC from the "Out of the box HC" category.

He's figured it out at WF. Glad Clemson and the Noles get to deal with him every season and not us. His teams just have that "well coached" look about them. Lawd have mercy if he ever gets some stud recruiters on his staff.

On a related note, is Hartman coming back next year? If so, they might actually be the faves for the Atlantic unless Dabo figures out his QB position for 22'.
Not sure he would have been a fit in Miami. Unless you are okay with 2* WR, no big names

Dude is a **** of a coach. He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for making Wake a respectable program.
