Thurston Armbrister

Man, if that's true (and I have no reason to doubt your intel, Peter) what a coup for Golden and staff. A late signee that nobody had really heard of with an opportunity to start from Day 1 as a freshman? If Armbrister pans out and is productive over his career here, I think we can safely lay to rest any concerns about Golden's ability to identify and evaluate talent.

Coach D deserves credit for this one. There was one scholly left and he hand-picked Armbrister.

Ambrister definitely looks like a **** of an athlete... but with that said, our LB unit really took a dive after one scrimmage. We were first looking at Kirby, Johnson, Blue, and Paul as the back ups to Gaines, Perryman, and Buchanon....

Now all of sudden those guys have vanished and you see Ambrister, Terry, and Cornelius in those spots. I'm just a little concerned about this unit now when I thought we were going to have quality depth at that position.

My mind is just spinning trying to grasp the situation...... :crownpour:

He's up to first team...the team has had some injuries to Gionni Paul and Eddie Johnson...but regardless...it seems the newly named "Terry" Armbrister is going to see some significant snaps this year in some regard.

Any thoughts from the GenPop on what this guy is going to bring to the team this year.

I've always kind of pigeonholed him as a special teams type player, but it is looking like he's stepping up as a potential key contributor.

As an aside, Jimmy Gaines playing the MIKE more opens up a spot on the outside seemingly, or, does the GenPop see Gaines moving back to the outside before fall football is over?

I like Gaines moving back to MLB as I feel like it gives us a chance to get Kirby on the field when he is healthy.

Good athlete who gets downhill fast, really wanted to see him at Safety over VT.

I think he was a Donofrio special, IIRC. At the time, i thought he was just a desperation move to get a serviceable body in as a stopgap to make up for Shammin's failures at DB recruitment. Didnt realize he would put on this much weight.

Wouldn't be the worst thing if Gaines 'shirted (if we can afford it), the kid needs some seasoning and strength. As far as Ambrister, I'm kinda peaked at seeing what he can become. Of course hes going to be raw right now, but if his football IQ matches the athletic ability, we could have an interesting player.

I hear a lot of if's, maybe's and hope's; that's never a good thing, nor a recipe for success......

The Witt situation is a real killer right now. I think the staff was counting on him to make an impact with his speed and hitting.

What's troubling me right now is tryna to figure out our defensive identity/philosophy. Are we a 4-3, 3-4, what? So many f'n question marks right now.

All I've ever heard about Armbrister was that he was a very good athlete. He looks likes he's physically ready to contribute so I guess we'll find out what he can do this season. In regards to Gaines, I've just never really been impressed. I don't think there's been one game yet in his career where he made a play that I said wow that was a nice read or tackle. Hopefully he's improved and can add something to our defense.

I think our depth is fine if we get these guys back and healthy. Perryman, Gaines, Buchanon, Kirby, Johnson, Paul, Armbrister, Cornelius, Blue.

We just need one of two OLB to step up and get a strangle hold on the position. I think Kirby is a future star (much like Perryman) so I'm hoping by mid season he has forced his way into the starting lineup.

Add Terry to that list as well. That's 10 kids. Plenty enough to find 3 starters and 3 2nd teamers, esp considering how often we might end up in nickel and dime where only 1-2 LBs need to be on the field.

Not only that, we only lose Buchanon after this year, and have at least 2 spots available to replace him for 2013.

The only problem is getting the younger kids some real gametime experience, and having them prove themselves on the field not just on paper.

I dont think Gaines will prove to be much. hope I'm wrong. I thought the younger guys like Kirby, Paul, EJ, etc would make us forget that Gaines was on the team

He's been working with the first team for 2 weeks... He is legit, this isn't just a product of injuries

He is a sophomore

More than anything this to me is a referendum on Jimmy Gaines. My recollection is that they had Gaines pegged in this position. If you look at the depth chart, it's obvious that they are trying to load it with guys who have played games. For as young as this team is, nearly every starter is the one (or one of a couple) guy who has played if they have that option. Gaines has played and yet he is the exception to that rule. In fact, I don't think that anybody who has played as much as him is *not* starting.

Furthermore, Gaines is not a MLB IMO. Weakside is probably his best spot--least thought. The fact that he's gone from a starting weakside guy to a backup MLB (not a good position for him IMO) would suggest that he may not play all that much. He has been injured but if he cannot reclaim the weakside position or at least split time there he is going to fade into Bolivia IMO.

Perhaps Gaines has improved, but I wasn't a fan at all. In addition to looking like a new starter learning a new defense, he looked small, slow, and weak. He didn't look instinctual, either. He looked like an unheralded guy from Buffalo.

My bad - thought he was a R-Fr. Still, the point remains.

I really dont think that he is though and I think it's testament to him being out of position. Nobody can play fast thinking and I just think he'd be better off weakside. If he can't crack the lineup there then he's hosed. In either case I doubt Armbrister is doing THAT much better than howard and bush and ivery and the likes--probably moreso that he's got a spot nobody can claim. JMO
