Thoughts On Our Win Against 1-7 (1-6)

It's just mind boggling. Dawson is a good OC. Good, not great, nowhere near elite. He has weapons he refuses to use, and he has tendencies that kill momentum.

Not sure how you guys think that’s on Dawson. He draws up the plays but Cam owns where the ball goes. Arroyo looked open to me plenty of times. Maybe Cam is back pocketing him for when he truly needs him?

Excellent write up op. Two things I'll add. Where the f is the creativity in the run game? How bout some stretch zone? Off tackle? Counter?

And te usage is still baffling to me
We haven't run a counter since Fletcher's TD against UF. For whatever reason we just refuse to do so. It's all inside zone.

I don't think it would be bad if Miami and Dawson go their separate ways this year. In all likelihood Dawson will get an HC gig at the G5 level, and Mario needs to go out and get an up and coming offensive mind with some hunger and creativity.

Dawson is a good OC. Sometimes he can be very good. But he's not elite, and he never will be. To his credit though, there's very few elite playcallers in the CFB game right now.

1. The Oline was not horrific. They did **** good. The issue is Dawson having these dumb calls with all vertical routes and the only check down being a 20 yard throw to the flats. FSU has good DBs who are coached well. This should have been an Riley Williams & Arroyo show, forcing their backers to play disciplined. Oline giving up a sack after blocking for a whole **** minute. Please don't even push the narrative that this is on them, it wasn't. IT falls on the shoulders of Dawson and Cristobal for approving this ****e gameplay. "Air raid is a mindset" my ***. What happened to Martinez blocking and then leaking out for the check down? We just scrapped that bread and butter? Dawson is so **** iffy man.

2. Lance and JT are setting our ends and our DBs up for failure with the way we line up. We're always heading up and inside shade of the **** tackles. You're beat, presnap when you do this. No DE is holding contain against a RB or athletic QB with these alignments. We're trying to hard to squeeze the C/B gaps for run support and giving up the edge. This in turn puts major pressure on the DBs as they become the force edge defender and have to be responsible for covering and coming up and tackling a QB which is hard af to do while on the field because you can't really tell where the Line of scrimmage is. It's legit no man's land.

Is rather give up the potential runs in the C/B gaps because what we're doing is counterproductive and we don't have the talent in the back end for it.

I don't think OL played well at all, but I agree with everything else you said. Dawson didn't help things at all. He's a hit or miss OC.

Carpenter did a good job in the run game today. Mauigoa gave up 2 sacks where he just decided not to block anyone... Our OTs were clearly worse than our Interior Oline tonight imo.
On one of those he was somehow the only one responsible for two rushers. Looked like a communication breakdown.

When the defense sends more than you have available to block you're going to give up some pressures.

Yet, the majority of the sacks we've given up Cam has had ample time to throw the **** ball. The avg time to throw is 2.6 seconds or something around that.

We're getting sacked at 5+ seconds bro. That's not on the Oline. Our OC is sending 4 Wr on intermediate to deep routes with no easy checkdowns on multiple calls. You can't do that against a well coached DB group. When Cam has a visible check down this offense is unstoppable and gives up no pressures or sacks.

Nothing about FSU tape says that our gameplay tonight is how we should attack them. Absolutely nothing.

That's a good point. He definitely had time, we just didn't get the ball out quick. Remarkable that we don't do much in the short passing game beyond screens and the occasional slant.

Let me say this first, this game was plain weird. The expectations coming in were that Miami would win comfortably, and that they did. We covered, and were in control the whole game. Nevertheless, the game was closer for awhile than most expected, albeit Miami was in complete control. Here's some thoughts on this game and going into next week.

Offense
  • I had been saying, before the UL game, that Damien Martinez was going to make himself know. Finally, he has become a centerpiece of our offense. Another big day with 148 on the ground, and multiple TDs. He will be crucial going forward.
  • God bless Mark Fletcher. He just went through a tremendous loss and played with pride and confidence. His dad was a great guy, and it's evident his son has inherited the same traits. He ran well tonight and converted some key 4th downs.
  • Zay Horton is WR1 material for next year. Great route runner and doesn't drop anything that comes his way. Quick in space too. That Offensive PI call was egregious and not at all on him. He will continue to emerge as the season goes on.
  • Quiet night from the rest of the WRs. Restrepo had a quiet game (his 3rd down conversion was wiped out by a terrible OI call) and JG3 had a key third down conversion catch. Sam Brown also had a catch or two, but again, quiet night.
  • Cam Ward had a whatever night (for his standards at least). 22/35 for 208 and a TD reception. But that wasn't the only story, which leads to the next bullet point...
  • The OL was horrific in pass protection. They gave up 4 sacks and a bunch of pressures. Just a completely inexcusable performance from them. Carpenter looked lost on multiple plays, and FSUs DEs worked us. I have no doubt that Mirabal will be merciless with this unit this week. Bar none, the worst unit tonight.
  • Borregales continues to be one of the best kickers in the country. 3/3 on the night.
  • This game reminded me a lot of FSUs matchup against Clemson. Clemson won that game 29-13. There was no doubt who was in control, but FSU did enough to bend and not break.
  • We scored on all but 1 of our drives tonight. We just stalled out inside the 35 too much.
  • Tonight was also a proof of concept that we can beat teams in multiple ways. I said this at the start of the season as a reason for optimism. Cam's not on? Here's Martinez and Fletcher. Run game isn't on? Here's Cam. The reality is Team's have to sell out to stop one phase of our offense, but almost always can't stop the other. FSU blitzed just about every down and their DBs played well tonight. Couldn't save them from the run game though.
  • Dawson had an ok game. There are times where it feels like he has no feel for the game. Run game is working, and we go to the pass and sputter out. Pass game is working and we go to the run and sputter out. I wish we stayed with what was working more often. Seems like he thinks if we have 2-3 good runs that a D will always bite on PA.
Defense
  • This was not a bad game for this defense. Overall FSU had 248 yards of offense, 3/13 on 3rd, and 4/7 on 4th. Held to 14 points.
  • FSU didn't do much of anything on offense. Their first score was down to a decent scramble by their QB on 3rd, and a freak run play that went for 40 (don't worry, Martinez repaid the favor in the 4th). Their second score was a garbage time QB aided by PI.
  • Our DL continues to remain a second behind where they need to be. We consistently generate pressure (we are #1 in pressures in the country), but we never seem to be able to get to the QB. There were a number of tackles that, had they been made, would've essentially ended FSU drives on 1st down.
  • LB play was alright. Kiko had two big pass breakups, but man does he take some bad angles. Bissainthe had a good game too, happy that he's alright after that huge hit.
  • Secondary played pretty well, albeit against one of the worst passing offenses in the country. Not really much we can tell in this regard; that's how bad FSU's passing game is.
  • We continue to take bad angles, which is something that must be addressed moving forward.
  • The D had some weird penalties called against them, same with the O. All in all, it evened out, but it definitely gave FSU life.
  • For whatever reason, teams just don't turnover the ball when they play us. We struggle to generate TOs, which makes this D look worse than it is.
Overall Conclusions and Other CFB Thoughts
  • We're 8-0 for the first time since 2017. Mario moves to 20-13 overall in his time here. Major improvement and another step in the right direction.
  • We manhandled and beat one of our biggest rivals by multiple TDs. It was not a replay of last year's Orange Bowl, but it was a great win.
  • Rivalry games are different. FSU hung around but we put it away decisively. As of the writing of this, a terrible Kansas team is in a dogfight with a good and ranked Kansas State team in their own House. Last year, a terrible Auburn team was within seconds of beating Bama. Last year our average team with a true Freshman QB in his first road start took 13-1 UnCoNqUeReD FSU to the limit. Point is: rivalry games change the dynamic. And guess what? We manhandled FSU and the game was never in doubt.
  • For the first time since 2004, Miami has beaten Florida and FSU in the same season. It's remarkable that it's been 20 years (albeit we only played both of them in 2008, 2013, and 2019 before this year). We also beat USF and FAMU; 4-0 in the sunshine state. We are state champs for the first time in 20 years.
  • Ohio State does not look elite. Nebraska gave them a big scare today. They are a team that does not have an identity. They're good in every phase of the game, but they're not elite. They are beatable and have a huge game in Happy Valley next week
  • Texas had a scare against Vandy, who seems to be scaring the **** out of everybody they play. Good win, certainly not an easy opponent, but this Texas team does not look unbeatable like they did earlier this year.
  • Penn State is, like Ohio State, good in every phase of the game. Like OSU, they are not elite in any single facet of the game. It's a James Franklin team, so I'll believe it when I see it. They have a huge gut check this week with OSU. Franklin has struggled to beat Top Big 10 teams in his tenure at PSU, and next week will be a barometer on where these programs stand.
  • UGA is idle this week but they look like the best team in CFB to me. The first half against Bama was an anomaly, and they've played great football ever since.
  • Oregon looks very good. #2 team in the country IMHO, and will be undefeated going into the postseason. We get an Oregon vs OSU/Penn State BIG Championship.
  • As for Miami, we have what it takes to compete with any team in the country. No one is unbeatable. But Cam needs to be on, and our D needs to overperform.
I'll add this about the sacks...the OL were letting guys run free on the first few sacks. This wasn't some sort of OL getting beat on the first 3 sacks. One was a numbers game and the other 2 were free releases that I believe were miscommunications. Mirabal better fix it.

Secondly, we were all worried about Wards off game being the death of this team. It's safe to say this was an off game for Ward. The rbs picked up the slack and if not for a fluke TD by FSU and a garbage time TD, the defense would've had a shutout.

Lastly, we share this team as a common opponent with Clemson and we put up more points while giving up the same amount.

it’s been beat down already but not giving cam time really killed getting cam chances to blow this game open… yes the run game was almost unstoppable but a true sign of dominance is being able to do something the defense is trying to take away…

Oh well I’ll rest easy knowing if any one unit will be coached hard after this game with film it will be them with Mario and Mirabel

Pretty much rival comes out fired up but better team prevails. Easier for fav against a team with no O.

Feel sorry for anybody who got in today and laid 22 1/2 which was just a bit too much. Did canes going for two involve covering betters? Seemed very weird—-no math I know suggests that was the Jubetter choice.
If you're talking about going for 2 at 29-7, it was to get to a 24 point lead (3 score lead - 3 TD with 3 2-point conversions).

Inexcusable List:

- Get Cam better protection if the line is struggling.

- Defense continues to be completely beaten based off of how they line up. FSU lines up heavy right and we're heavy the other way. FSU runs right thru the empty space.

- FSU dropped or missed a bunch of easy throws.

- Third to last play is the rollout throw to the right corner of the endzone. Uncovered but dropped. FSU goes back to it 2 plays later. 2 defenders to cover the 3 WRs.

- The D line cannot get home. They either get stopped or whizz right past the QB. Even when they luck into a sack, they can't bring down the QBs.

- And when they ran past the QB, he just jogs straight for 15 yards bc there's no spy. Ever.

I know Guidry isn't working with a single NFL player, but you have to try something new man.

I watched this Bozo switch the D to a 3-3-5 last year to beat Clemson. Where's the adjustments now? Where's the improvement from Jason Taylor? I'm watching every other team this year force turnovers and get big sacks. Except us.

I expect more from the coaches and they should expect more from the players.

That's a good point. He definitely had time, we just didn't get the ball out quick. Remarkable that we don't do much in the short passing game beyond screens and the occasional slant.
yeah, i will say there was a play where we sent arroyo in motion, dumped it to him in the flat, and got an easy 10 yards. we should be doing a lot more of that sort of thing against the pressure looks FSU was giving us. when they sell out like that it's a simple numbers game that no OL is going to hold up against. we have to have answers other than "do something cool, cam" and oddly we didn't seem to.

Great write up amigo: agree that the lack of TO's we create really hurts us... if we were getting 1 or 2 a game( at least 1 seems reasonable) with our offense on a normal day is such a weapon in games getting out of hand quick... probably silly but just via eye test defense just seems "hard"... tackling, getting off the field, etc..

just comes down to execution, not game plan

we settled for three field goals where this season those have been TD's - we convert those then the game is more out of hand

the gameplan was fine, evidenced by the yards rushing, total yards, and third down/4th down success

This and the slant to Horton when we lined up 3 wr one side and Horton alone. FSU got us for a sack on this lineup early in the game. The quick slant in man was there and the second time Ward got it home.
