Thomas Gore portal

I think there can be a reasonable analysis of this, though.

When a transfer first arrives, he is healthy and energetic. He is happy for the fresh start. He may be very responsive to coaching. I'm not sure why people think that first impressions are some sort of "propaganda" campaign.

Over time, other issues may arise. A transfer who fought with his position coach might pick a fight with an offensive lineman. The "bad habits" from the old place may resurface. A player may begin to have issues with coaches or scheme or teammates.

In the case of Gore, he was also small for his position. It happens.

But I'm not sure why so many people feel the need for extreme hot takes. It's possible both to see the potential and then to uncover the reality shortly thereafter. You do not have NEARLY the same amount of time to evaluate the intangibles and personality traits of Portal players.

Gore didn't work out. Move on. Let's not create bizarre hypotheticals and fantasize about all the other players we coulda/woulda/shoulda taken who were not even interested in UM.

People like to pretend that Portal players are "recruited" the same way that HS players are, when many of the Portal guys are already 80-90% certain of where they will land.
Everything you said is reasonable and I don't disagree with it.

My only comment is, Gore was clearly not it from before we added him. And I hope the staff didn't need multiple practices to figure that out.

But as you mentioned above, if the reason is we simply needed bodies. Nobody should complain about that. If the reason was, they thought Gore could have a big impact. That's slightly concerning.

Again, nothing personal, but it's pretty bold talk (that you don't have to back up) to say you would have left an empty roster spot instead of taking Gore.

The full list of players is not published or reported? Nonsense. There is a full list of Portal entries (each year) on 247.

So, again, I issue the challenge to all of the tuff-talkers who think that taking Gore set our program back by several years. WHO was interested in Miami that we coulda/woulda/shoulda taken?

We backchannel like fiends. So if someone really wanted to come to UM, we would have known it. Gore certainly wasn't a "superior eval" to anyone else.

Let's hear the other candidates. Because I haven't heard ONE NAME at DT that we "lost" over taking Gore. And, again, I'm NOT DEFENDING HIM, I'm just trying to figure out why some of the snowflakes on this board are so triggered by his name.

I'm fine with taking better players. I wish we had a better DT over the past 18 months than Gore. BUT WHO?

+ The list on 247 is only the “top transfers”. It’s not a comprehensive list of every player who is in or jumped into the portal.
+ You are conflating my argument with the assumption that Miami has other players it should have gone after. My assertion is that since the kid didn’t meet the specs (height/weight/athleticism), you didn’t have to bring him on-board.

As I typed that out, I realize we’re talking about an evaluation corner-case for the team. I’m from the “if you can’t use them, don’t bring them” school of team building.

Are we just making bad transfer evals?

For our D-line, thus far we have 5 returnees from the 2023 roster and 11 additions.

Returnees
Campbell, Moten, Horton, Mesidor, Bain

Additions
Cook, Clark, Alston, Blount, Russell, Jones, Scott, Lightfoot, McConathy, Rudolph, Pickett
Room upgraded for sure. Still got time next season to upgrade it even further. Could be some future transfers there as well depending on what we bring in. Pause

Cause not everyone works out

Better luck at your next stop, mate.

Is our head count under 85 yet? I can't keep up these last few days

The problem is we actually did have to use him

He had more sacks than Leonard Taylor last year

Has it been confirmed by any of the Miami guys that Gore hit the portal? Haven't seen anything yet from any of the main UM writers. They are normally on top of it

Sad times.

But not something unexpected if you’ve watched this team for the last 20+ years.

Campbell wasn’t available? Horton?

What about a DE inside?

I had the same exact problem with the kid from Ely. McCray?

Completely correct.

The problem is, every time you have an outlier like Aaron Donald (smallish, high motor) or JJ Watt (walk-on to Hall-of-Famer), then it raises the bar for "hopefulness" and coaches get a bit scared to overlook those types of guys.

I don't think anyone saw "big impact" coming from Gore.

Fair enough. I just think that our next step was an ad in The Miami Hurricane for Open DT Tryouts.

As for 247, I know I've seen a site that has EVERYONE in the Portal, even the walk-ons. If it's not 247, my bad.

Reading all the various takes here I think we are all saying the same things. Just varying ways of describing how ****** we’ve been and what’s the best cause of action to take as we are hopefully climbing out of the cellar

I’ll never be a Mario apologist but I think we are in a better spot now than we were this time last year after the absolute disaster that 2022 yielded. Not only on the field but we had to replace basically the entire coaching staff and try and pry portal guys away with absolutely nothing to offer. Like literally nothing but a paycheck which everyone can do.

This year at least we can sell that we are investing bigtime. Problem is we are still a .500 that got their **** pushed in by Rutgers the last time we took the field.

Can’t fix that all in one off season but looks like we are trying everything in our power to me
