Onofrio's defensive scheme is terrible, TERRIBLE. No amount of talent can overcome his passive style of allowing the offense to dictate the pace of the game.
You realize he's coordinated good defenses before, right?
I've thought about that. At Temple, they really didn't have much talent, so the mentality of "bend, not break" was thrust upon them.
The only defenses that win games are attacking defenses. Only an attacking defense can disrupt an offense, as these 'crazy ********' are coming from every which way with their ears laid back.
Job #1 for a defense is to place your opponent into a state of psychological dislocation. You can't allow them to plan a damned thing. You disguise your defense by shifting and mixing, faking, showing blitz to make them change their play, overloading the point of attack - a gamble - but half the time it's a real game changer.
If you play defensive defense, instead of offensive defense, you'll get your *** kicked with great frequency and thoroughness.
Coach D is great where you must have a bend not break state of mind, but he doesn't know the first thing about an attacking defense. NOTHING!
Golden is doing a lot of things right, but he better be finding a defensive coordinator who can attack an offense. LSU's defense attacks. Alabama's defense attacks. KSU's defense attacked us, and we couldn't do squat.
Energized, attacking defense. It's the only way to win in D1.
