throw the ncaa **** out the window, whos the better on field head coach, off field head coach, and recruiter? this is a cloud free zone.cRandy didnt necessarily inherit a ferrari. More like a 92 porsche that needed ALOT of work

You can't "throw it out the window".. It's part of disecting the job they've done here. To answer your question, I say AG is the better on/off the field coach & recruiter. On the field is debatable while the off the field / recruiting is not. Randy did a good job of keeping guys out of jail here but as far as promoting the program, community outreach, camps, developing relationships with local HS & just about anything else you can name, he might be WOAT at the D1 level. Golden has done very well in that department (outside of understanding the political dynamics in certain cases). So basically you are asking, who is the better on the field coach? For me it is AG. While he suffers from an outdated scheme & being too conservative, his clock management, demeanor, attention to detail & all around control/input into every unit is way more HC material than Randy's. If standing there looking clueless with his arms folded never saying a word is your preference then to each his own.. Randy inherited a 2004 Chevy Impala with low miles and Golden inherited a 1971 Ford Pinto that was missing the Carfax. It really isn't worthy of discussion.

Randy and Al have very similar records and all, I get that. But if you really think we were better off with Randy....... I dont even know.

Resume wise, Golden is better.
When Shannon can take down dumpster fire of a program and turn them into a 9 win team like Golden did with Temple then I'd have to give it more thought. Until then Golden by a wide margin.

As for UM tenure wise, Golden has the better record despite having to deal with disadvantages that Randy didn't most notably the NCAA investigations.
And a major flaw with these types of comparisons is the Golden had the misfortune of inheriting Randy's garbage, which affected on field results. Compare that to what Addazio did at Temple when he took over when Golden left.

Randy was not a great HC by any means, but just like Golden got Randy's garbage, Randy got garbage when he took over too. Add to that, Randy left talent, but they were juniors and redshirt sophomores, so they left early. It also didn't help when Golden puts guys in positions they don't fit like Brandon Washington. Dude was a solid guard and a crappy tackle, but Golden forced it when he didn't need to.

In 2007, Randy took over a team that had 5 (5-stars) , 40 (4-stars), 28 (3-stars), 8 (2-stars)

In 2011, Golden took over a team that had 3 (5-stars), 25 (4-stars), 40 (3-stars), 9 (2-stars)

I would say Golden has done more with less. Throw in the cloud for ***** and giggles, Golden is the better HC of the two.

@ all those blaming Al's failures on the dearth of talent left behind by Randy....

You realize that the majority of starters on offense were Randy's guys, right?...and that's the side of the ball that looks half decent....

Most of the starters on defense are Golden's guys....And that's the unit that happens to blow ***.

Golden isn't a great recruiter. If he were, we wouldn't miss as much as we do. Virtually anyone can walk into this position and land top 15 classes because of the talent that surrounds the school. That being said, Golden's recruiting is consistent and has been far superior to Randy's. Golden seems to have a method to his madness. Randy on the other hand brought in 8 LBs in '08, 3 of them didn't get in and then didn't recruit a single one the following year. Doesn't make sense, and his classes kept declining in overall quality.

As for coaching, well, both are defensive guys. I'll let the numbers tell you the story

In 2011, first year under Golden, same defense with some experienced talent on D, PA/G 20.1, good enough for 18th out of 120. Better than any of the 4 years under Randy as HC.

You mean with Randy's guys? Yeah that was good for a 6-6 record with losses to 2 horrible teams. You're looking like **** here chief, because the more Golden has gotten his players in here and installed his system the ****tier this defense has gotten.

Man, bad or worse, tough one. If we take NCAA into consideration, I go with Shannon. He intervened the best he could (which is to say weakly and lamely) whereas I bet Golden would have been yucking it and hamming it up with ****peero.

You are making my point for me. It's not ALL about the defense. As you can see, we had a pretty good D with the same system we have now, with experienced talent in 2011. It still didnt get the wins. It's not only about the D, you need the O and ST to win. Once that experienced talent dipped waaay too early, the D suffered. Now that the young talent is becoming experienced, the D as bad as it was, improved from 2012 to 2013. 2014 should see another jump in improvement and if O and ST performs, more wins.
