As of today, Hartley is headed to WVU; Devonte Smith is sitting in the heart of SEC country, where we have not had good success or confidence in our ability to pull elite talent, and Jeudy, who is from home and should be a no brainer to us, is wedded to Bama, and no new names from the JUCO ranks have yet to emerge.
I think we should look at what we actually have as opposed to what we assume we will have come National Signing Day. That will help any of you newbies keep your sanity. This isn't on Pete, he's just reporting, but being close or in the game or making a run for a top player and not landing them obviously means nothing to our program. You can't win that way.
As several have said, at this point, WR recruiting is a concern. I'm glad we have Evidence; he looks like a baller. Personally I'm not impressed with the competition in his highlights, but he appears to do what D1 recruits do against less skilled competition and that's dominate. He looks like a possession receiver for us. I would not bulk him up to play TE (@MizCane) because to my old eyes his build looks different than his brother's build. We need him to play his size at receiver - big and physical.
Evidence is all we have right now and that should not be the case at the University of Miami. We are a program built on speed and aggression (physicality). I know that some of the issue with WR recruiting is on the previous staff, for example not recruiting Jerry until late - how do you do that????, but we've got to do whatever is necessary to keep our top receivers at home including Jerry. Franchise mentioned it months ago - we've got to put pressure on our top talent to stay home the way other programs do. This is why Devonte will in all probability leave us for LSU, which doesn't even have a serviceable quarterback. I admit I don't know how that pressure is created beyond winning, but as a program we need to figure that out and lock down SF.
Pete said that the staff has Dean on the verge of committing to play DB, which is great, and then intimated that they could do the same with a JUCO receiver. Well we need to see evidence of that in the form of names of quality WR targets who are seriously considering us. If we were on a top JUCO WR, why would it be a secret at this point? Seems like Pete or someone else would be hearing some names.
I'm hoping like the rest of you that Hartley does de-commit from WVU and then commit to us, that Devonte will choose us over Bama and LSU, that Jerry will divorce Bama and marry Miami, and that a difference making JUCO receiver will emerge that wants to play at UM. Being honest with yourself, how much of that happening seems likely to happen considering our track record? Because right now, all we really have is Evidence Njuko.
