The Wildcat

I dont like the idea because he is not a true QB, if you watched his highlights he was never really reading the edge, he would either pull it or didnt which i think was predetermined.if he is in trouble i wouldn't want him to force things and put the game potentially on his mistake. if it works Coley and Golden are genius if not then thats another story.

If it helps us in short yardage I am all for using it. I also like the idea of having a kid as athletic as Gray back there running it as well.

With RW out, I can really see us running some wildcat here and there. Honestly I just hope Coley can come up with anything to get as many top players on the field as possible. If that means having Gray or Yearby in the backfield with Duke I don't care. I don't care if we have a split black set with both of those guys though, because it would make us much more of a threat to pass if we have our actual QB in.

It's a package we should have, even if not used that often. Defenses have become more accustomed to seeing it and stopping it, but it can still be very effective. Gray seems like the perfect weapon for it.

Now that Gray is in, it's time to ask: What's your stance on the Wildcat? Is it an outdated gimmick or an effective power running formation?

Personally, I like it in short-yardage and red zone. The numbers are favorable because you get an extra blocker instead of the quarterback handing off, and the misdirection keeps the defense on its heels.

It all depends on personnel. The Dolphins were still having success in Year 2 until Ronnie Brown got hurt. You need a powerful runner with the instincts of a trigger man and just enough passing ability to threaten a defense. Gray fits the bill, especially on a team like ours that struggled in short-yardage situations.

We didn't run it with Crawford. is Gray that much better than Crawford?

Watching Crawford get stuffed vs. Wake Forest and him moving back to safety should tell you enough. It's not his best position, he's where he needs to be now.

I'd be up for it, if we called it something clever like....

The White Bird or the Storm Surge or something.

Until we actually line up and play smash mouth with our oline we shouldn't be trying any gimmicky ****.

Last years oline should have been the strength of this team. Instead they tried to put our road graders in space.

Only team on our schedule that we should try something different is maybe the noles.

Gray will need a lot of coaching (technique) before lining up in goalline situations. He runs vertical and as we saw from Gus last season, that's not something you can just change over night. Give him another season.

If the OL is still slapping each other on the *** at the snap, I'm predicting it wouldn't work very well.

If Gray/Rosier can throw screens well enough, I'd be open to it in the middle of the field. The Arkansas wildcat stuff seems to have died out a fair amount in terms of just running tight sets and faking the jet and running power out of it. Goalline it probably still has some potential but just taking the threat of a pass out of the defenses mind seems to hurt the offense more than the extra blocker helps.

If they got really creative with it, Gray at QB stuff would be interesting. Veer stuff with getting him on the edge would probably work really well, inverted veer too with Duke at RB but I wouldn't want Gray running in between the tackles too much. Fake jet to veer stuff would be cool too. Maybe veer with the two lead blockers in the backfield like Auburn did in the NC. Maybe some package play type things with read option with a backside screen/TE pop.

So straight "wildcat" meh, Gray at QB doing weird stuff, maybe.

It's a gimmick...never been a fan of it even when the Dolphins had success with it.

If it's part of the goal line package....I can live with that. What I don't want to see is them utilizing it between the 20's and shuffling QB's in and out. That's pure garbajo.
