The overridingly simple question that I fear has it's answer

The fact of the matter is we didn't put together 4 good quarters on the same day once this year. 9 games is a result of sneaking past bad teams and the 4 blowout losses is more indicative of how badly out coached we were. We absolutely had the talent to lose competitively to all 4 of those teams, if not get a w.

There's things I like about the staff. The energy in the program is better, the talent level has improved each of the last 2 years and this looks to be the third. But there are some x and o problems that as of yet don't appear to have been addressed and I think we hover around 9 wins a year until it does. Which is better than its been, but not good enough. We will see. I give credit to golden for a lot of foundational work that will benefit the program with or without him. I feel closer, just not close enough.

What are your expectations for this season?
Improvement.
I expect improvement across the board on defense. Secondary will be better, LBs will be better, and holding out hope that the DT class he's bringing in that includes 2 Jucos that are ready to play from day 1 will be an upgrade over the departing class. Also expecting the returning group like Kalamu, Chick, AQM to raise their level of play.

Offensively, depends of QB play. But if WIlliams can be a field general and let the skill players do their thing we should be good.
The way the schedule plays out I'm expecting the team to be hitting on all cylinders by mid season.

All things that can't be objectively measured. How convenient.

If we win 9 games or less will you call the season unsuccessful? Since you've been thumping our upward trend of wins under Golden.

Oh I think we win 9+.
But with you guys calling last season schedule a piece of cake and the up coming one more difficult, if we win 9 games wouldn't that be an improvement?

No.
That answer by canealmighty tells you all you need to know about where his loyalties are. No matter what golden does he will excuse it. The guy is a golden fan first and cane fan second. He also may be a university shill.

Golden is a very smart guy. He has to know that the seat is heating up. And he has to know his buddies is on fire. I'd have to think he changes stuff up this year

Not possible. Golden is a borderline ****** and/or forgot how to coach when he got here. he is incapable of making a single adjustment...just read this site. Most people here have forgotten more than Golden will ever know.

I've said it from the first game he's coached. For better or for worse Golden is a "by the book" coach.
These types of coaches will not stray far from their plan. Paterno was like this.
Depending on the situation they inherit or find themselves in achieve success may be prolonged.

Just like when you "expected" golden and his lover Dorito to produce a Top 30 defense. What was the defense ranked again this year? Thanks.

Well said and true, but some of that inflammatory reaction is just a bunch of Canes who love our program to the core of their being and are fed up with a decade of being mediocre.

It's not a finally realize, it's a not go bat sht overreacting and being in denial of the facts that don't support your view. Stronger arguments when more rational and not inflammatory in every thread every time.

Strong theory. Apparently we can't think for ourselves and have a valid point despite not being coaches.

Please make sure you don't criticize politicians then either. Seeing as you aren't a senator or president either.

And if you ever need a lawyer, and he doesn't perform well for you, just accept it if you are not a lawyer.

By by that logic, you would fare well in North Korea. Just go along.

...will this staff, regardless of all the well documented issues and the occasional individual player exception, ever make this team better than the sum of its parts? Or even the equal of its parts? I fear not, wish to be wrong....

I think we can all agree Coach L has done a **** respectable job in his first 2 years (i.e. UM's 1st winning record in ACC, year 1 & ACC Title in year 2), so maybe we (coaches, players & fans) can learn from their perspective after a loss to Duke going forward to play #2 Syracuse...

@CanesHoops: "Success is never final; failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts." - John Wooden #BeatCuse

I know coaching, talent, adaptation & more all apply. But so does mentality. Just sayin'... On to the next one.

respectable is an understatement. but ya coach L has been nothing short of amazing

Great coaches in very intuitive when it comes to players, and very instinctive when it comes to game day.

Golden relies on lists.

His players will NEVER even equal the sum of the parts.

in goldens defense, he stuck it out through the sanctions and got some **** good recruits to trust fall into his arms when every other coach is in the kids ear telling them huge sanctions. who knows what happened with PSU, and honestly i dont see a reason to doubt what he said happened with that process. it was recruiting dead period, and we dont even know if he interviewed do we? also at the end of the day, HE STAYED. he was handed **** and we expected him to serve us a sundae, which was impossible until all of shannons parasites were gone along with the ncaa smog. give the guy 2 clean years and judge him on that. I love how people were crying for BUTCH back, who left us before a bowl game! All im saying is this guy has shown commitment to the program every step of the way and is at the least owed a look when things are done on his terms.

I think it's dire but not hopeless. But that's just the last but of optimism in me.

LOL, you need bear Bryant to point out how crappy the D has been? Maryland beat us by running the same 4 plays over and over. And we made , read this now, ZERO adjustments... Exactly what is it going to take for you to realize Golden is over his head?

Did randy or frank leave a better roster. ...for the record we better improve this year or I will be let the rest of you....I just want to see what he can do with his players...if we get the same im for the ad to do what Haden did and the cat we had should have done to randy the day of the Virginia lose fire mid season!!!

Well you can bash Golden all you want, but good coaches prepare. Then they prepare some more and then prepare. Thats what a gamePLAN is. Good coaches also have a plan if what they are doing doesn't work. They have a plan if the opposition adjusts to this or that.. they should ALREADY know AHEAD of time what they will do if the other coach makes any possible adjustment. Its not on instinct, but golden fails at the lists is what it comes down to. He should have a whole list of what to change if the other team exploits the flats, what to do if they exploit the middle deep, exploit the run d... but no.. what he needs is MORE LISTS.
