The more I think about taking a post season ban

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and really I am not sure there is a good answer.

But my thought on it is if this team shows toughness and finishes the season 8-4 and proves that it deserves to be in the game I think you have to go. For the sake of the players and Golden you just cant take that away from them.

If we finish 7-5 or worse and back into the game I think we should take the ban and stay at home. At 7-5 (5-3) we really wouldnt have earned anything. It would have just been a gift by UNC probation and all other Coastal teams being the worst they've ever been. (excluding Duke but they are Duke)

Original thread, just kidding.

I am sticking with my original thought process (to the board)

I haven't heard one good argument to self impose a second bowl ban if we could go to the ACCCG, please enlighten me. Please enlighten me why we should self impose more punishment prior to an NOA if we can go to the ACCCG. Please enlighten me why we should be the first school to self impose a second ban. Don't say recruiting either because we don't even have an NOA so its impossible to know what the NCAA holds, also making the ACCCG would be huge for recruiting it would show Al is getting us there.

So please teach me, please let me know why if we

1. Have already self imposed one bowl ban,

2. Haven't received our NOA yet, and

3. Haven't made the ACCCG EVER

Why should we self impose at this juncture.

I strongly support self-imposing no matter what the situation. Yeah, it sucks for the seniors, but if they are true Canes than they will know that this is the best for the program in the long run.

Self impose, which give us a total of THREE postseason games.

THEN we have a solid basis for arguing, say, "Loss of five scholarships for three years," we can counter with "Three scholarships for three years."

Surely the loss of an additional post season game is worth six scholarships.

dont think it works that way. it is not a negotiation.

if we make the ACC champ, we play in it.

Devil's advocate...what if we don't impose and we end up with a great team next year that can't go bowling (like OSU this year)?

You can't play life on ifs, but it's worth a consideration IMO

An unprecedented self imposed punishment to counteract the hammer the NCAA wants to justly or unjustly drop on us.

To get as much punishment as possible in the rearview and avoid punishment that will impact us going forward. Sucks for the team and program but you sacrifice now to help save the future.

Here's my question, would the NCAA take into account when we impose a ban (if we did)? For instance, if I am the NCAA and you decide to impose a ban as soon as you are bowl eligible, it would have a lot more weight to it than waiting until after you (potentially) get eliminated from the ACC chase. Likewise, if we waited until after the Duke game, won the game and then imposed, it would have the most weight. Examples

Win 6th game at UVA or USF and self impose a ban: NCAA would look favorably on us
Get 6th win, but wait until losing to Duke to self impose: NCAA might look favorably on us, but I think it would be a lot less so than announcing right away
Get 6th win, but wait until after beating Duke to self impose: Would probably get the most respect from the NCAA

I'll let others argue whether we self-impose or not, but I think if we are going to do it, we should do it as soon as we are bowl eligible. The last example might get us the most respect, but if we lose that game (and therefore go with example 2), I think the NCAA will probably view it as a half-assed attempt to look like we are punishing ourselves.

I agree it will be very tough to bow out of the ACC championship game. We will have to make the decision to skip both or none. Hopefully we'l have the NOA very soon.

I am 100% against self-imposing if we win the division.

Me too, but it's more of me being selfish and just wanting another crack at FSU and 2 more Miami games than me thinking about what might be in the best overall interest of the program going forward.

Per my post above, I think we need to self impose when we hit 6 games or not impose at all. If we wait until we lose (if we lose) the Coastal, then self imposing has very little weight.

OK, Now what if we self impose and the NCAA goes easy? We pass up the ACCCG and a possible BCS bowl for what??

There really is no correct decision. Thats why I think if we earn it at 8-4 we go. If we back in at 7-5 we stay home.

What is best for this current team or best for the future of the program? hmmmm

I'm sure UM/Shalala/Counsel/ACC has had some sort of indication of what punishment is gonna go down.

Is Shalala a gambler and rolls the dice with this team in the acccg? I say she doesn't.
