The linebacker unit

Put me down as saying likely to struggle. Perryman should be pretty good but nobody else that people keep mentioning has really played. Nobody talks that much about gaines or Buchanan but I consider it likely that these guys will be predominant players. Neither has looked like a standout to this point and both have injury issues. Any young guy who has never played is likely to be mediocre.

Was Perryman mediocre??...

Raphael Kirby is of equal value to Perryman coming in last year...except he is bigger and probably a little ahead of the game as far as coaching.

Cookie Buchanon when healthy isnt a bad backer....He is actually pretty good...his weaknesses are taking on blockers on a consistent basis...but coverage wise he has always been good..and he has been our fastest backer probablythe last 3 years...now with the added size...its his time.

Seems like Lb is the deepest position on the team on paper. Can't wait to see what the young guys show this season. Perryman is going to become a household name around the nation this season IMO

I think these guys gonna be all over the place making plays. Definitely not a week bunch.

take away spence and mccarthy and the last few seasons our LB crew is addition by subtraction. shannon recruiting was to get small guys and have them grow into a position... well that didn't work! you had our LB's getting dragged all over the field. its nice to see guys come in ready to perform and learn.

I just want to see a Miami LB's cover TE's across the middle... By the way UW TE's are still wide open.

This is where I am on this. Perryman is a stud, I think he is a lock for 1st team all ACC and should make some preseason AA teams next year. Cookie is pretty solid. I love Kirby and think he will give us what Perryman did last year but probably not ready to start. Everyone else is suspect. You guys counting on 180 pound true freshmen to step in are on some dannyboy ish. Not saying guys like Terry etc. wont be good eventually, but I do not feel comfortable with any of the incoming guys other than Kirby, nor do I feel comfortable with guys like EJ, Paul, etc. yet.

So we have a decent group, Perryman is a stud, but I'm very cautious about the depth right now.

do not sleep on J gaines..I know he was lost last year, but this kid can flat out play...give him some guys upfront and he will get us 100+ tackles..we all know perryman is a beast...LB core is getting depth and size..

Jimmy needs to get his butt back in practice or he isn't going to have a position to come back too. Eddie is running full speed with the opportunity and I love the competition its creating!

I am sure the coaches & trainers are keeping him away for now...not JG.. Coach D and Coach Golden love this kid...I heard ambrister sp... is also tearing it up....

either way the D is getting bigger and better..

180 pound freshman LBs? We don't have those anymore.

We're talking about Kirby (220), Eddie Johnson (230), Gionni Paul (230), Jimmy Gaines (230). I haven't seen Gabe Terry but even he's listed at 210. ****, Jawand Blue is listed at 194 on our roster but he looks a lot bigger than that. Physically, our guys seem to look the part. Yeah, maybe they don't have the game experience, but at least they won't be getting pushed around out there. If they can get the mental down, we should be more than fine at LB.

I think RBuch is holding his ground right now but I think EJ might make it impossible for Gaines to get his position back after he recovers from his injury. Those are great signs that LB will no longer be a liability for us!

Love the next guy up mentality. That's why the Canes in the 80's early 90's never wanted to miss time, they were worried they never get their job back.

Great friggin point

I actually liked what I saw from #31. He is very physical and can run with the best of them. We'll see...

Perryman was decent but what are you saying that he was some All-American? He was not a dominant player he was just very good for a freshman. You guys are so desperate for linebacker play that we are acting like he was junior year Dan Morgan. Are we expecting that some guy is going to come in and do the same? Maybe maybe not. We know what we have with Buchanan he is decent and coming off an injury that may impact his best aspect. At the end of the day it is most reasonable to expect one good linebacker one decent linebacker and one mediocre linebacker without much if any experience depth. This is without a great line in front or in back. To me this sounds like a recipe for mediocrity though others are free to disagree

Yea let's not forget he looked pretty **** good in the spring game. He looks considerably bigger and made a very big hit on one of our rb's

I want to say the LB core will improve with Porter and Smith at DT, but weren't they on the field together vs BC last year?
