The Fact That Kevin Patrick Isn't A Coach Here

Some of my earliest memories following the canes were of him and Darren Krein being the bookends of that Dline. Krein is the head S&C coach for the Phins right now.

That trio of Krein, Medearis and Patrick was something truly special. Those guys were hellish coming off the edges. It makes one appreciate the days of vintage Hurricane defense.

Not only that, Krein and PAtrick, at least, were certifiable nut jobs. Those dudes were probaably roid ragers but they were some bad a$$ white boys. Patrick got into fights all the time in practice. Matt Britton was another one - loon but animal on the field.

Really thought Chickillo would have a Medearis type impact…. Kinda high hopes i know

Who is he?

Who is he? I hope you are young.

Kevin Patrick:
He was the backup DE to Rusty Medaris and came in in the 1992 game against FSU (after Rusty's career ending knee injury) and chased Charlie Ward around all game. IIRC, he had 4 sacks. ****, that DL was so good, constantly in the backfield on every play. They had Ward running for his life.

Yes, and the tackles were Miller and Hamlet, who were both undersized and pedestrian in 1991. Sonny was a **** of a DC.

I'm a huge Kevin Patrick fan, but there must be a reason he's coaching at North Texas and not a BCS-caliber program.

Hate this logic.

Has absolutely nothing to do with his coaching ability. There are some great coaches at lower level skills. Some guys just land in certain spots for certain reasons. Just works out that way.

By this logic he must've gotten worse as a coach cause his last job was at a much "bigger" program.

Not sure why he hasn't got a higher profile gig, he's coached some serious talent on the DL at USF and developed freaks like JPP and George Selvie.

Same here, one of my earliest memories too. Remember them tearing it up. I remember going to the OB back in the late 80's/early 90's and getting an inflatable UM helmet pretending I was them lol. Makes me sad to see where we are right now. Makes me sad my kid will never step foot in the OB. Gotta pour one for the old OB :emotcrown:

Even further, most technical wizards come from relative obscurity.

I remember them dominating that @ PSU game coming fresh off FSU. I was going ape **** all by myself in my LR when I was suppose to be doing homework. I also thought they were better then Curry & Copeland from Bama then that whole bowl game thing happened. Farking Big Cheese was running fake news paper adds calling Miami MNC's before the game was even played. Classic Miami FB!

well lol it's almost as bad as the logic that also is here on his board that basically any ex cane should be a coach here just because....

not it saying that applies to Kevin, but it's called an epic fail frequently here

Many....almost all come up either from HS or start as a GA somewhere and then move to lower tiered schools. Some much of coaching depends on your network.

Whether you like Art or not his biggest drawback is he never left Miami until he was canned. As it is it was Ed who hired him for Ole Miss. Randy's biggest deficit is he didn't have a large network since he spent almost all of his time in Miami for the Canes or Phins. Moving around does build your network as long as you don't get consistently canned.

That's right. Both Hamlet and Miller were converted defensive ends. That defensive line was the epitome of aggressive Hurricane defense...fast, light and extremely quick off the ball. It was a defensive line built on instant penetration, something we've gotten away from under the current staff. And when you factor in the Bermuda triangle, we're talking about a front seven that played down hill with extreme force. Yes, Sonny Lubick was a **** of d-coordinator. In my opinion, Jimmy may have been the father of the modern day 4-3, but Sonny took it to another level while at Miami. Those defenses under Sonny and Tommy were goon squad hit men. It was pure entertainment to watch the Miami defense straight smother folks. ****, I miss those days!

"He seemed to do a very good job at USF, not sure why he didn't get a higher profile gig."

... and here might in lie the answer—Miami fans getting overhyped for a former player, while the rest of the world just sees a pretty good up-and-coming coach. Spent a lot of time as a defensive line coach over the years with the Bulls, never graduated to a coordinator and was just hired for the same gig at North Texas?

If this guy didn't have Hurricane bloodlines and Golden hired a North Texas defensive line coach, the fan base would be up in arms.

That's fine, but how does it equate to "Randy and Al f---ed up by not hiring him"? How is he any better than L.D. Scott, Frank Maile, or Robert Prunty?
