The disparity of line play between Miami and the Elites

Excellent thread OP. I have always maintained that we do not put nearly enough emphasis on OL. Your comment about Scaife and Reed being great prospects and the need to repeat that type of haul year after year is spot on. It just seems that our program has always lacked that emphasis on OL recruiting and development. It almost seems as though we are happy doing the bare minimum in that regard and that must be addressed going forward because you can have multiple studs at QB, WR,RB and TE but if you have no OL your offense will go nowhere.

Defensively , Kul's laziness notwithstanding, our problems with depth on the DL particularly DT have not been for a lack of effort or focus as even during our darkest times we have always managed to recruit good to very good DEs. The problem has been consistent DT recruiting. Currently we have a stable of very good DEs and I see nothing to lead me to believe that won't continue. Again the problem is developing any semblance of depth at DT. This problem was magnified under Golden with his ridiculous 2 gap read and react scheme which no DT worth a **** wanted to play in. What really puzzled me during the first 2 years of the Richt regime was why we still could not recruit elite DTs. Looking back we know Kul just didn't want to recruit yet the problem persists. Since I'm a reasonable guy, I'm going to give Simpson his time to show us what he's got. Frankly I have a good feeling about the guy and think he will do a good job for us. The next 2 classes are absolutely crucial to establishing depth along the entire DL. I think we currently have some very good yet underrated prospects committed for 2019 and some potentially great ones for 2020 so we will see.

I think we will restock and build great depth on the DL. It's the OL that worries me the most both in the short and long term. Is Searles the right guy? I'm not sure. I am sure that we must sign Evan Neal and at least one more great prospect on the OL. If we can build a great offensive line and create legitimate depth, this offense will be explosive. Richt has taken a few missteps. He can recover but recruiting on both lines must be dramatically improved.

Just because I was curious...

Wisconsin '17
OL - .8652
DL - .8611

Notes - Miami does rank better on both lines. However, it is notable, that Wisconsin returned in 2018 more collective OL starts than any other team in the nation and a long recent history of developing professional offensive linemen from the mid-tier 3* level locally.

Wisconsin's DL recruiting is once again, less than Miami's a year ago (especially when you had players like Chad Thomas and Trent Harris, 5* and 4* players respectfully on the line), but again, a tradition of development and scheme have taken that mid-tier 3* average to All-Conference level. Example, Leon Jacobs, a 3* OLB (Wisconsin uses EDGE players), drafted in Round 7, will start in Week 1 for the Jaguars from that same defense. Miami will not have one starter in Week 1 from last years front seven.

Wisconsin's development, culture, and coaching off-set a lot of this, IMO.

LSU '18
OL - .8995
DL - .9207

Notes - I feel like an idiot for ever thinking Miami had a chance in this game after seeing the disparity here. The OL advantage is slight...but the disparity between Miami OL v. LSU DL as well as Miami's DL v. LSU OL is dramatic. Yeah, I knew LSU had an advantage here, but to see it quantified in this way makes me feel dumb for thinking Miami had a chance, nevermind being favored. Wish I did this breakdown before the game.

Miami only has 3 defensive linemen (Nesta, Willis, Joe Jackson) that would be among LSU Top 10 prospects on the DL/EDGE. Sobering. LSU's Top 5 DL/EDGE are on par with any in the nation, including Bama, Clemson, and Ohio State.

I'm most worried about the OL, especially with the scheme Richt runs.

He's a good OC, but he's not going to win against the big boys unless he's on a level playing field, talent wise. We simply don't have the horses at OL to do that - which results in this ****** Shotgun / Pistol offence we run.

DL - I think the DEs are fantastic. We just need more of them. The DTs are young and potentially very good, but we were really screwed by Norton and McIntosh.

For both positions I agree that we just need to continue stacking elite chips and let the positions sort themselves out.
