I just randomly saw how the Denver Nuggets have a big gaudy DPOG (def. player of the game) chain they award to a player after every game & was thinking about how much a fumble it was for Mario not to adopt the chain after Mannys departure. These celebration chains are viral & widespread throughout sports, and just really seems like such a pointless and stupid thing to get rid of because of Marios no-nonsense shtick bs.

(not the first thing the Mario has effed up but that's for another thread)

Mario has made his share of mistakes over the last three seasons but getting rid of the turnover chain upon his arrival was absolutely not one of them. Just look at what a mess this program was when Mario got here. Under Manny we were basically all gimmicks and zero substance. The turnover chain and touchdown rings were emblematic of our toxic culture. The first year was great but after that it became hackneyed and self indulgent. It was obvious that it had to go. This program desperately needed to build character.

Self indulgent celebrations were rampant during our glory days when everyone hated us. Dudes having a minor dance sequence after a first down, sack, INT, or whatever, was common place. Why are we suddenly trying to be angels? Alabama had a turnover belt before we even put out the chain and it was never an issue for them.

I'm not saying that having the Chain would turn us into the early 2000s crew...but clearly, taking it away changed nothing. Are we not one of the most undisciplined teams? Did taking the chain stop guys like Jacolby George from being knuckle heads?

Taking away the chain accomplished jack ****. Kam Kinchens lost us a game by jumping a route during prevent defense, without the chain. We've yet to field a defense that can allow less than 27 ppg in ACC play since Mario has been here. What exactly did removing the chain fix? Because I guarantee you, the improvement in culture starts with off the field habits, not removing something that provides a bit of instant gratification and momentum.

You missed my point entirely. The difference between those teams/players of the glory years and the teams that came a few years after 2002 through the Manny years is huge. The teams of the glory years both 80's, early 90's and 2000-2003 were teams who had character and substance. Yes they danced and talked trash on the field while treating the opposition like an inside joke but they worked harder than anyone and their drive to be the best was literally unmatched. Those practices/scrimmages on Greentree during those times were legendary. Players were intensely fanatical about upholding the standard long before it was a cheap Al Golden talking point. The players in those days on those teams were deadly serious about passing down the traditions of outworking the competition while having the fire to compete against anyone, anytime and anyplace. The players/teams that came later and up through Diaz had none of that. They were soft and entitled and acted like wearing the helmet with the split U made them special. They didn't realize that the player/s had to be special before they earned the right to wear the helmet.

No I don't want to turn us into angels. I want the team to have the toughness, character and work ethic necessary before they start strutting and preening about. I agree 100% with your point that taking the chain away has not accomplished much in terms of building the character that I've been alluding to. The culture that Mario always refers to hasn't amounted to jack **** thus far and your examples are right on point. Look at all of the constant bone headed mistakes/penalties that Cam had to overcome to pull out a win especially the game vs Cal. That's culture all right! A culture of buffoonery. However that is all on Mario and nobody else. So far he has failed to significantly change the culture here into the culture that this program had when we were competing for national championships.

What we need to realize is that just because Mario has not been able to affect the necessary transformation of our culture thus far doesn't mean that getting rid of the turnover chain and touchdown rings was wrong or a bad idea. Those things had to go until we got back to being a tough disciplined and hard working football team that polices itself. The great thing is that when we get there that goofy things like the turnover chain won't be necessary. It's cheesy and I hope it never comes back. Another point is that this is a new era of college football. The refs are always gunning for us. Why be a target? Just play tough fundamentally sound and disciplined football and win!

Imagine how wack the chain would’ve been last year with our Swiss cheese defense. It was cool when mannys defense was balling in 2017

Buddy, do you realize how embarrassing a turnover chain would’ve been last season with that defensive showing? Or the one million TD rings we’d have given out? **** was fun but played.

What we did in the past as far as celebrating on the field is in no way similar to the sideshow that became the turnover chain.

This guy gets it! Its really not that deep, its a viral trend across sports that UM were pioneers of & something we should be proud of, we should celebrate & use as positive marketing for our brand. For those who think the chain represents losing, the first year we had the chain was the best defense Miami has had in a (decade?) probably.
 
Im down to die on the hill that its a ******* piece of jewelry that people take pictures of when they do something positive on the football field & thats its pretty cool that we were the first ones to do it!

Y'all are thinking like its this grand allegory for culture & winning. I'm pretty sure UM invented smoke in the tunnel when the players run out on the field, do we need to get rid of that too because we don't win enough? UF should stop drinking gatorade ?


At the end of the day only good came out of the chain (marketing, recruiting, positive reenforcement) and its a shame something that UM invented is no longer represented on the team.

Everything was fun and exciting at one point in our lives(like the anticipation of Christmas Day as a little kid). The same thing applies to the TO chain. It brought more excitement(mainly in 2017) than wins. It ran its course and I am personally glad its gone.
