Only Mario and co think doing QB this way is ok and doesn’t negatively impact everything else

it's insane.. he literally is gambling on his team's future.. of course you ALWAYS want the best option but sometimes getting a GOOD option early can be even better if it helps attract more playmakers on the offense.... BEST QB + below averge WRs/TEs may be equal to Good QB + Good WRs/TEs...

The way Cam Ward worked out may be giving him some sort of false sense of security.. it may work again but he's playing with fire...

And the "seeing the part of the iceberg above water" stuff about Mateer is not nearly the full picture. If message board posters want to give up hope based on one school hiring an OC, that's up to them. We were definitely close to getting Mateer to visit, though.

I think the fact that Mario put ALL his eggs in the Mateer basket and couldn't get him to VISIT is actually sad and an indictment on Mario... At least Cam Ward visited us immediately...

If he couldn't get a commitment from Mateer to even visit, he should have pivoted to other QBs immediately... or at least concurrently...

Agreed. If anything, this makes the qb search look that much worse. All our eggs in one basket and couldn’t even get a commitment to visit and still didn’t pivot to one of the other options.

Come on, man. We needed 2 Portal QBs last year no matter what else happened. TVD left and Emory was healing from a broken arm.

Had Cam Ward stayed in the draft, we would have pursued another Portal QB in the spring window.

I wouldn’t dispute that regarding a spring portal QB.

Looking back at it, though, what good QB jumped in the spring portal last year?

I Don’t see any good QBs that jumped in 2024 with Rashada being the high profile name.

I know, doesn’t mean that Mario wouldn’t have gotten someone else to jump in via tampering but the odds were not in his favor.

But we are about to find out if he’s able to do it this spring if he doesn’t get a last minute QB after the playoffs.

I believe you as you are more connected than I am but I just hate putting all my eggs in one basket then the basket gets dropped and the eggs get broken and there’s nothing left to eat.He got lucky with CAM last year and I guess he thought he could turn Mateer even with the odds stacked against him ( coaches ,parents)

I’m hoping Mario has something happening behind the scenes cause I’d hate to even go into spring with Emory or a true freshman even though I think Luke might be able to do the job if need be.

Say what you want, but Dawson is showing that he’s subpar at identifying QBs on the recruiting front. Sure, he has a track record of developing competent quarterbacks that are already on a roster, and Cam is certainly an outlier, but who has he identified and developed from his own recruiting efforts? Even the Houston QB was already on the roster when he took over.

He’s going into season #3, has signed 2 QB’s and one hasn’t even made it to campus yet (Nickel). Emory was Ponce, not Dawson. I think this is a little premature.
