The Bank (7/19)

- Expect to see a lot of Crystal Balls flipping in the NIL era. Players have NIL agents, some of whom represent multiple targets at once, and these situations are even more fluid than in the past. The NIL agents are also the sources for many recruiting writers, which explains a lot of the back and forth. This is a big week for Miami and each battle is ongoing.

- The name I feel best about is LB Malik Bryant (Orlando). He wants to be in Miami. Not a done deal but we are in good shape. Edgerrin James is a mentor for Bryant and is involved in the recruitment.

- As I mentioned last week, Ohio State is making a major run at S Jayden Bonsu (Hillside, NJ). We felt good last week, probably closer to 50/50 now. My sources believe he is slightly leaning to Miami all things being equal but it is an ongoing process with multiple factors.

- We are still alive for OL Olaus Alinen (Finland). Last week, the word out of his camp was Miami. The tone has shifted to Alabama but the battle is raging and he is still engaged.

- Don't close the door on OL Payton Kirkland (Orlando). There is a lot of mutual interest. I continue to expect Tommy Kinsler (Ocala) in this class. The optimism at OL remains very strong.

- Miami continues to have positive conversations with WR Hykeem Williams (Stranahan). That's a battle and we have some momentum. At the same time, WR William Fowles (Dade Christian) is really picking up steam with every strong off-season performance. He has size, speed, plucks the ball and has a great attitude. I wonder if he's this years Santonio Holmes or TY Hilton- local guy who badly wants to be part of a big WR class. I expect our class to finish with 2/3 of Williams, Fowles and Andy Jean.

- My sources have never had a great feeling about S Joenel Aguero (Lynn, MA), but he is admittedly hard to read.

- RB Chris Johnson Jr. (Dillard) is leaning hard to the Canes but his dad wants him to go through the process, which is understandable. We need to keep the social media love going there. He is a huge target with big national programs in pursuit.

- Aside from the announcements, we are in a calm before the storm. Many folks are on vacation. The July 30th cookout will be huge in identifying the realistic targets for a close. That should kick off the next sprint of commitments.

- The Gators are feeling desperate with their class and making reckless, naive moves in South Florida. Many are skeptical of Florida's staff and their occasionally amateurish approach.

- I've mentioned these names before, but the smoke remains very real with '24 CB Desmond Ricks (IMG), WR JoJo Trader (Chaminade) and WR Jeremiah Smith (Chaminade). If we are able to lock them up early, we could be looking at a Big 3 that builds momentum for a #1 overall type class. All three of those guys are top 10 overall talents in their class, and another Top 10 player (LB TJ Capers) is from Cristobal's alma mater and has already been on campus multiple times.

- The internal buzz on Tyler Van Dyke is off the charts. He is insanely competitive and has been smoking people in offseason drills while letting them know about it. He is more vocal than QB D'Eriq King, who was a great leader in his own right. He's exactly the kind of tone setter we need in the Cristobal era. A source on the offensive side of the ball said that QB Jacurri Brown has "special gifts and the right mindset." The key for him, like many QBs with the gift of speed, is going through his progressions and taking easy completions on time.
Beautiful write up @DMoney . Thanks for keeping us in the loop. Ur work is greatly appreciated. Go Canes

Wonder if it's less NIL and more acceptance. In years past, accepting non-citizen students requires jumping through additional hurdles (i.e., paying tuition upfront). With a full-ride, I'm not sure what the backend hurdles are.
The University of Miami is an international university in an international city. They have nearly 3k international students to Alabama's 1k. 3x more than the U of Alabama despite being a university nearly 3x smaller in enrollment. So, UM has 17% international students while U of Alabama has 2%. That's 8 times as many per capita.

We also have Lou Hedley and have had several international basketball players. So, UM should pretty much be experts with Visas and other issues for international students.

If the IRS ever actually wanted to open this can of worms the Dolphins would be without their starting QB this year and his entire family would have their own wing in a federal lockup.

But but but "Miami is heavy in the NIL game". Like THAT'S somehow dirty in the eyes of these cretins.

IRS Supervisor: "Goddammit, we have hundreds of whistleblower complaints against Miami from addresses all across the southeast United States, and those yahoos have been "atting" us every NIL news story and editorial to @IRS for the past 2 years. Are you telling me that we can't find ANYTHING wrong here?"

IRS Agent: "Boss, we have all of the properly filed 940s and 941s, and LifeWallet paid 25% withholding tax plus both halves of FICA and Medicare. What do you want me to do, everything is legal and all taxes have been paid on-time and in-full?"

IRS Supervisor: "Alright then, let me call my friend over at the FBI, I heard they haven't yet closed the adidas case."

This week should be remembered as :

The Battle For Winterfell.

season 8 GIF by Game of Thrones
Nah.. If this was the case we'd be going 5/5 due to plot armor.

A patently absurd hypothetical.....yet completely believable.

Hoops alone on this front. ****, women's hoops alone.

If that's the issue, then you make a balloon payment in Year 4.

But the NIL rules are more the issue.
How so? You are probably in the know more than I am. I am just conjecturing the money aspect. Even there I don't have the details to know which way favors the kid. Just hope the kid has good people around him to make a sound decision that hopefully favors us. Lol.

It was discussed in relation to Lou Hedley. Can't pay US NIL money to non-US-citizens.

There are work-arounds, both legal (as LW did with Lou) and illegal.

EDIT: and I hope this goes without saying, but a foreign individual who desires a long-term residency in the US is probably well-advised not to break any laws prior to being granted citizenship or permanent residency...but I'll let my immigration attorney brethren respond to that one themselves...

I believe Olaus would be wrapped up with a bow if it wasn’t for an issue with him and not being a citizen. Bama can use their tactics to counteract Miami doing things the right way.
I'd never thought about this, but it makes sense. Olaus is surely here on an F (student) visa. He can't get OPT as a high school student, and he can only get work related to his major course of study on OPT. I don't see where he would qualify for employment authorization, unless he can claim economic hardship, which would seem a tough sell. The obvious solution is to be an $EC school and just pay him under the table.

Some of us have been hyping TVD going back to the 2nd half of the UVA game. The young man effortlessly makes more throws than 99% of the QB’s in college football. He was 3 plays away from being undefeated after taking over for a veteran QB 2 games into a redshirt freshman season. To borrow a line from Santana Moss and Mario Cristobal, “what”!! Coach has been telling everyone who will listen that we have the best QB in college football.

TVD is the best QB at UM since Brock Berlin. I know, that‘s not saying a lot, but that is a long, long time. Like the Israelites, we have been in the wilderness for many years and our Moses is about to lead us out. At least for 1 year.
