I am with you on Ewers. His draft grade went to s*** because he has been hurt. He needs a healthy year. And NO POSSIBLE way he comes back to Texas. Kid will fit right in here. I am calling the shot here.

I want Mateer too but the fact that the majority of yall are incapable of understanding that a kid can get better is one of the funniest things I see on this board annually.

Can this team with the ACC with 2023 Emory Williams? Obviously not. Can they win it with 2025 Emory Williams? Maybe. I can’t say yes or no, because the kid could (and should, and probably IS) be significantly better than the last time anyone saw him play.

To me, the real question starts on defense. Y’all are focusing on the wrong ****. Cam Ward couldn’t win the ACC with the 2024 defense. So who cares if it’s Emory or anyone else in 2025? If the defense isn’t a lot better, it doesn’t matter.

We didn't win the ACC with a Heisman finalist, Davey O'Brien winner & probably a top 3 draft pick.

We're absolutely 100% unequivocally not winning it with Emory at QB.

He's simply not the answer.

And yes I can and am saying that 100% right now & I don't need to see him play next year to come to that conclusion.

He ain't got it. No matter how hard yall want him to have it, it's not there. Small sample size, or large, he's not IT.

I'm been preaching this too. Put a ton of money into the secondary and you don't need the #1 offense in the country to win games.

People don't understand, if this past season taught us anything it's that even a HISTORICALLY good QB can't overcome a horrible defense.....EVEN WITH a relatively easy schedule.

This team needs balance. Fix the defense and infuse as much talent over there as possible between LB, CB, and safety. Also, Damari needs to move to free safety. I honestly think he'd be a really good safety and is wasting his time at corner.
 
We are Mateer or bust at QB and that’s just the reality given the market and the way you’ve recruited the position up until now.

The higher end options currently in the portal are simply not “high end” options and the prospective pool of QBs who haven’t entered yet just does not provide the requisite quality of even last year.

At some point you have to give Emory the chance to BE a Mensah/Murphy/Mendoza caliber player if you are high on him and he’s had three years in the system and you can save NIL money for other positions.

Like to me it just doesn’t make sense for us to pay $1m for Mendoza when Emory has basically the same physical make up and has been in the system. Sure Mendoza has put up yards at Cal, but come on — if that estimate from D$ is true, there is no way on god’s green earth that player is worth it to this program.

You want to get a game breaker and there’s basically only one game breaker and he’s not in the portal yet.

Dawson has earned the benefit of the doubt to roll with his guy after being forced to play TVD and still putting together a top 40 offense despite his QB TORPEDOING games, IMO. And if you don’t land Mateer, you might as well roll the kid out who you played against a top 10 Clemson defense and a top 5 FSU team on the road as a true freshman. Especially if you think your homegrown receivers are capable of making that next step.

HOWEVER, if you don’t make serious changes on defense at a player AND coaching personnel level, it doesn’t matter who’s taking snaps cuz you’re getting cooked regardless.

To be clear — I don’t consider myself an Emory guy, I even had a tweet featured in an article criticizing our QB recruiting last year, but realistically the available market options do not make sense at a macro level.

I hope Mario stategy on QB in portal works out, because we will be a 7 Maaaaaybe 8 win team if Emory is our QB.

With Mendoza I think 9-10 with improvement on defense, with Mateer 10 maybe 11 with improvement on defense. Schedule is tougher, but 8 home games.

You’re judging that off his true freshman year, his recruiting ranking, or what you were told? I want a portal QB, full stop. But I’m not gonna write the kid off based off what I saw in 2023. I’m not gonna say I’m sold either, obviously. But he was an underdeveloped true freshman playing against the 2 best defenses we saw all year. I’ll be very interested to hear the no bull**** reports from the spring on him. I don’t think he has Cam’s ability in his range of outcomes, but I’m not convinced he’s incapable of winning games here. Cade Klubnik just won the ACC for Clemson and that kid was hot garbage as a freshman. And before people jump on that comment, yes we should be aiming to have a better player at that spot than a kid like Klubnik.

What this season should’ve taught us is a great offense can overcome the worst defense I’ve ever watched Miami trot out on the field to the tune of 10 wins and being right on the cusp of the playoffs.

But hey let’s try to fix the defense instead and toss a game manager at QB. Then everyone can get their wish and we just turn into Cal.
