The Bank (10/16)

It's been a while, so it's time to empty the recruiting notebook for the Bank. Let's go position-by-position:

- Luke Nickel (Alpharetta, GA) is locked in at quarterback and is having a good senior season. I continue to expect Miami to monitor the Portal and potentially add a proven signal caller.

- RB Girard Pringle (Seffner, FL) is committed and wowing the staff with his combination of speed, quickness and toughness. As we've been reporting, I don't see a second back in the class unless something changes.

- WRs Josh Moore (West Broward) and Daylyn Upshaw (Phenix City, AL) are committed and Miami is happy with both. Malachi Toney (American Heritage) decommitted but remains in play. The biggest name is Vernell Brown III (Orlando) and Miami will continue to push there.

- The staff is ecstatic with the senior film for Brock Schott (Leo, IN) and Luka Gilbert (Cincinnati). They believe they have an elite haul there.

- One name drawing particular buzz on the OL- SJ Alofaituli (Las Vegas). After watching his senior film, some in the building believe he is the best OL in the entire nation. You don't know for sure until he gets here, but I get the sense he is in the Rueben Bain, Francis Mauigoa, Elija Lofton category as an instant impact player.

- DE Herbert Scroggins III (Savannah) is locked in and Miami loves what he brings at JACK linebacker. Strong, productive, bendy, and plays hard with high-end intangibles. DE Hayden Lowe (Los Angeles) is considered a first round-type talent and Miami feels good about its momentum with the USC commit. Keep an eye on that one.

- The Canes are very happy with the senior film for DT commits Mykah Newton (Newberry, FL) and Donta Simpson (Chaminade). The primary target for a flip is Ohio State commit Jarquez Carter (Newberry). He is a major priority. I expect Elijah Griffin (Savannah) to commit to Georgia, but Miami will keep working there.

- Gavin Nix (IMG) and Ezekiel Marcelin (Central) are leading their respective defenses as expected. The Canes would like to add one more. The names to watch: Kellen Wiley (Seffner, FL) and Ohio State commit TJ Alford (Vero Beach, FL).

- The two biggest names to watch, at DB and in general, are DJ Pickett (Riverview, FL) and Ben Hanks (Miami). The Canes are pushing hard for both and there is movement. Jaboree Antoine (New Iberia, LA) suffered a season-ending injury, but should recover fully. He is visiting in a couple weeks and was having an outstanding senior year.

- There are a few names I wanted to highlight on the current team. One guy who isn't talked about externally but is considered a big-time player inside the building is Matthew McCoy. Some feel he is the best NFL prospect on the line. Some young names who are starting to emerge: JoJo Trader, Ny Carr and Armondo Blount. Elija Lofton and Jordan Lyle already have big roles, but those roles will increase. And keep an eye out for a guy who has been out with injury but is finally cleared: S Isaiah Thomas (Clearwater, FL). Excited to see what he looks like now that he's healthy.

Appreciate the update @DMoney. Just an idea but what do you think about linking threads on each of the recruits/targets that are named in these?

It could spark convos and updates in those threads after reading the bank. @lindend usually has threads for each of our recruits and targets on the recruiting board too.

Just an idea.

Honestly this doesn't feel like the strongest class as a whole in general to me. Like DB seems loaded this class, but the other positions seem like they are a little down from some previous classes....

Uhhhh....

Yeah...but the reality is, when you "fix a position group" over the last couple of years, you land an amazing class that is likely better than the previous one and at least one or two of the subsequent ones.

Thus, when we "fixed" the OL group 2 years ago or the DL group a year ago, then for the next year or two, you might be "a little down". That's just natural.

So think about this.

QB - this is definitely UP from the last couple of years, at least for HS recruiting. Who knows what will happen with Portal recruiting.
RB - we are only taking one (barring injury) and I think Pringle is as good as any INDIVIDUAL high school recruit we've had under Mario.
WR - still a work in progress, and on this one I will wait to see the finished product.
TE - the pair we have look pretty **** good as seniors, so I'd have to put this on a par with QB as being "UP".
OL - the Samoan is fantastic, but I can acknowledge that 4 of our 5 lowest-rated recruits currently are OLs (and I've heard this is an area where we could see a couple of upgrades and/or drops)

DL - we need to beef up here, this one I will grant you as being "DOWN", even if we had not just fixed the DL last year.
LB - we need to land one more, so this is similar to WR above
DB - this is the group that we are "fixing" this year with big numbers and talent. We've got 5 guys at the 4-star level, though one is injured. We finished "second" with a couple of guys who may flip, so I will reserve full judgment until Signing Day.

Now, you can say "yes, WR and DB are the reasons I'm saying the class might be a little down", but I think the quality is there, even if the quantity needs to be increased by Signing Day.

You know who our targets are. You know we are swinging for the fences. We are not just lurching to some uncommitted guys at the last minute, the way that Florida has recruited for the past several years.

We need to close strong with guys on defense and/or Portal.

I wasn't talking about our recruiting, just the entire hs 2025 class

QB, I'd say is down imo. Underwood seems legit, but like Raiola, Lagway, Nico, even Arch seem like they were much higher quality prospects to me than are out this year. For us specificlaly, yeah Nickel is a big step above what we have recruited recently.

RB definitely seems down overall. I like Pringle, but there's even only like three top 100 RB prospects on 247 right now. pringle I'd put there with Lyle and above Fletcher.

WR there are a lot of highly rated guys, I like Moore and Myles a lot. But honestly it seems decently top heavy, and I'm not sure the top are even close to the top from last years class. This part is a little dissapointing because WR is probably one of our biggest needs for this class specifically. Just seems meh to me. Like we have to land 2 of like Brown, Wilson, and Ffrench or something... Currently committed guys are below last year.

DB, I actually think is pretty loaded in general. Lot of good/great prospects imo. This part is working out really well for us given this is the biggest need we have to fix on the entire team. Currently committed guys are legit imo, and what we COULD land may be our best DB haul like ever. It would be by far best in the country, but Ohio State is going insane there.

LB seems like it's pretty deep this year too, I'd say. So maybe you could put that and TE together as being better than normal. I expect this LB haul to actually be our best yet.

DLine seems just average to bad compared to last year though. After last year, it'll be not as good, but last years haul was elite.

But idk, maybe it's just cause thats what I'm focused on for us....

Who is Underwood? Luke Nickel is going to be a **** good one.

Taken as a whole, if you are saying that the entire Class of 2025 for all of college football is not as good as the Class of 2024, I'm not sure there's a response for that. I thought we were just talking about UM recruiting.

I hope I am. But in order to get into the Top 5, we have to get to at least 290-295 points. UGA right now has the #5 class, and they have 293. Could kids flip from those Top 5 schools? Sure. So there can be some movement. But I just don't see getting quite that high.

Let's do this as an exercise. Let's say we keep every kid we currently have committed, and we add this haul, which I think we can all agree would be absolutely insane and probably not very likely:

DJ Pickett
Vernell Brown III
Jarquez Carter
Ben Hanks
Kellen Wiley

That's 27 commits........and puts us at 287.77 points. Still not enough to get into the Top 5, in all likelihood. Even adding Elijah Griffin to that puts us at 295. Probably right at the cusp of the Top 5.

So I don't doubt Mario. There isn't a soul on this board who wanted this guy (nary a hint of Diddy, btw) more than me, and it's because of what he does on the trail. But it's just a math problem at this point. So, if I had to bet, I would say we do not get into the top 5, and #6 is probably the ceiling. JMO. I'd be more than happy to be wrong in December.
I don’t worry about recruiting like I did before because Mario is as good as I could ask for on the trail. It seems from previous comments that people do not think Nickel is ranked as he should be. Where do we think he fits in rankings-wise, we’re he ranked properly?
