The Alumni vs. Non-Alumni Relationship

I tire of reading unwarranted (as opposed to criticism that is deserved) criticism of the school and athletic department from people who don't support the program and have no stake in the school or the program.

This.

The two guys who attended the scrimmage with me are not alums, and you would be hard pressed to find bigger fans than those two.

Unless one of those dudes was Kugler, all you have to do is look around the corner on Monday to find a bigger better fan.

Both sides of my family are from Miami from WAY back and I was born there but didn't grow up there. Grandmother was an alum in the 40s. Mom went in the 80s and I had the good fortune of going in the early 2000s. My dad did not go to UM and is one of the biggest fans I have ever met. I was raised watching 'canes football with him from the time I could walk.

To be honest I have never given a **** about alumni versus non-alumni because the Hurricanes are a city of Miami team. There is something truly special about the community that formed around the 'canes back when Miami was a completely different city. To this day my dad talks about the '83 orange bowl and how the entire city drove around honking their car horns for days after the game. There isn't that kind of continuity in the city any more (and its not a race thing, its a size thing), but I will always love and respect the old school 'canes fans and their entire community.

We lost a lot when we lost the orange bowl, but the 'cane spirit lives on and I can't wait to get back to dominance.

Rant over.

well said...only thing i would like to say is we also lost a lot not only bc of the OB but bc of the losing. remember there were terrible crowds going into the final season of the OB

I'm not alum yet. Doing my masters there now. My dad and I started season tickets when we moved here in 92. Have never felt different about alum or not. Some of the biggest fans I go to games with never attended UM but they bleed it more then some who have gotten degrees. This is another reason we aren't fans we are a family. The real family shows up in good and bad times. Get ready for a lot more to start showing up

I'm a student and I have no problem with non-alum fans. Actually, a lot of them are much bigger fans than students at the school because they grew up down here and lived and died with UM as kids just like I did before I went to UM. What I have a problem with is idiots on here talking **** about the administration, etc. for no reason and blatantly rooting against UM in other sports who call themselves Hurricane fans. Excuse me if I don't take you seriously. And that really has nothing to do with being an alum.

Smart man

r there other fanbases w the same stupid alumni vs non alumni discussions. who cares? were all canes whether you went there or not as long as you show up to games, love the school, donate, etc.

I love the canes in all sports as much as anybody. I grew up in Charlotte NC after being originally from here in Orlando. I applied and got into Miami but I knew I could never realistically go there due to money and being in a lower middle class family. NC State ended up being where I attended college because everything included I was paying about 1/4 of what I would have at Miami.. I don't think whether or not you go to the school has anything to do with it. I would love to have gone but I don't think that just because some might have more opportunity to attend colleges that others can't because of factors out of their control makes them any less of fans. If anything, people who follow the school and don't go there are even bigger fans sometimes because it takes more effort to keep up with everything not being around the program IMO

In my experience this debate or fight comes from rival schools (did you go to Miami?) and people who think Miami is strictly a football team.

Again, I don't care if you went to Miami for school. I only care that you don't **** on the program/school as a whole.

So when we're on CI and some fake fan wants to shut down the bball program in order to give more money to the football team, that person can drop dead. If some fake fan wants to gloat about Puke Bball on here, that person can drop dead.

(To the board)
As for money and season tix, do as you please. Nobody cares what you do and you are not a bigger fan for doing xyz....but It would be cool though if you supported the program (everything helps).

So instead of buying tix on stub hub for a few bucks, go through the school.

Make a fifty dollar donation to the school.

A large proportion of UM alum also happen to be from privileged backgrounds. Tuition at the U is not cheap, even with the Merrick scholarship I couldn't pay for it and ended up transfering to FSU and got paid to do it.

The non alum fan base is composed of a majority of middle class and impoverished fans. No offense to those of you who don't fall into this category but, some of the privileged fans that are alums are spoiled pricks who look down on '' lower class '' people. Those fans often contribute to the division between the alum and non alum fans.

Well said, what I was trying to say more succinctly
