The divide is between the UM fans and the guys who only root for UM football. There are way too many of the latter, and they annoy the real UM fans. I've yet to encounter a UM alum who roots for other programs in college basketball or college baseball.

Textbook fake fans. Don't give a **** about the school who are likely to be frontrunners.

They can all drop dead.

I don't give a tinker's **** about baseball - one of the most boring games out there, right alongside golf.

Nor do I care about basketball. I just find it as exciting as shuffleboad.

So that leaves football, and if my attitude ****es off or annoys "Real UM fans," then you can go siht in your hat.

It was football that introduced the small local college in Miami to the entire world. It was football that built the school, and put lots and lots of money in its coffers.

Drop dead?

After you.

My post doesn't apply to people who don't care about other sports but support more than one program.

Is that you?

Do you openly spit on our basketball teams?

Do you chit on the baseball team?

Of course not! If we win a championship in any sport - I'm as happy as a puppy with two peters - I just don't care to watch, as I find no joy in doing so.

But our football team? Woody, baby. Woody.

Graduated class of '11, the only thing that I really get annoyed on this forum (or in general) is when people **** on the school for raising academic standards or think that the school is misplaced in not always making football a focal point. I want a good football team as much as anyone else ( I watched way too many ****** teams in my 4 years) and I have great pride in the University in all aspects. I remember watching the Canes in the early 2000s before I ever was thinking about college and that's definitely a big part in what made me apply. I 100% agree with the idea that having a good football team is the best way to promote the University and vital for its long term health.

At the same time, as I pay back student loans, I have literally 50,000+ reasons that I need my degree to hold up and give a good presentation to employers (and thus far it has very well). If that means that occasionally we may not be able to get a player qualified or kick some knuckle head out so be it.

At the end of the day though, I think the whole point is kind of unnecessary as I think the vast majority of Canes fans, alumni and non-alumni, want to see a healthy University in all facets.

Half of our fanbase consists of people who root for Miami in football and UNC/Duke in basketball.

The divide is between the UM fans and the guys who only root for UM football. There are way too many of the latter, and they annoy the real UM fans. I've yet to encounter a UM alum who roots for other programs in college basketball or college baseball.

first let me lol @ "the real UM fans" comment.... i guess you have to also root for UM in soccer to be a real UM fan huh?

Really I dont even care for college basketball or baseball and definitely dont care about rooting for UNC or Duke.... those 2 schools are the complete opposite when it comes to what made non-alumni fans of UM football. so why would I be a fan of UM football then root for Duke in basketball???

I tend to believe this notion is more of "Alumni" making up stuck up reasons so they can convince themselves they are a better fan of UM then a Non-Alumni. smh

Non-Alumni relate more to the UM football players on the field... u can take that to mean a number of things.

Alumni mostly relate to the private school "harvard of the south" make-up that mostly represents the student body at UM.

alumni should be happy non alumni support the team. the money goes into improving the value of their diplomas.

of course the shalala has helped with rise in academic rankings and the medical campus is doing well led by the perennially top ranked bascomb palmer department and the fast-rising neuroscience department.

however the football team put the school on the map. don't get it twisted.

I will also say this. There still seems to be a misconception about filling football stadiums for UM games. The fact is, even in the glory days, unless it was FSU, or UF, or ND coming to town, we would average about 55K for regular games in the OB. When teams like BYU, Colorado State, Maryland, Miami OH, Memphis, BC, Tulsa, etc came to town, even at NIGHT, in the OB, when we were UNDEFEATED, we only had about 55K showing up. So you combine the lack of success in the last decade, with the horrible gamtimes (noon) and being in that sterile, boring stadium, in the middle of no where, and that is why we have the attendance we have. Even if/when we really become a top power again, I dont expect to see more than 50-55K at JRS for regular games.

Yep! Go look at attendance figures during the 2001 season... I think the Rutgers game was like 40k....

As a non alum I think it is deeper than than alumni vs non alumni. I didn't go there but have season tickets and attend 7-12 games a year. I also cheer and attend basketball and baseball games. This is where the divide is I think. Many of the non alumni are bandwagon fans from the 80's who sit back and criticize and never go to games, dont give a dollar to the school and cant wait for college basketball to get here so they can cheer for Duke or Carolina. I get along great with both parties but I fit in better with alumni.

Basically, people who don't vote then **** about the president.

dont be an *** kisser

I seriously doubt it's the "non-alumni" thats ****ing about the president??? For the most part the people who have something to say about the president whether good or bad are Alumni.

The non alumni usually dont give a **** about the politics of whats going on with the school itself, we are just fans of UM football b/c of how great their teams were and b/c of how bold and confident those guys personalities were on the field... which was something that a lot of young people could relate to.

Non-Alumni just want to watch the football team they grew up being fans of, while the Alumni is constantly worrying about Shalala, Athletic Directors, money allocation, and other things of that nature..... but rightfully so, they went to that school and have a right to discuss those issues.

Really? In the context of this board you don't think there are non-alumni complaining about Shalala? I think there are both alumni and non-alumni who complain about her when it is perceived that she is doing something to hurt the team. Now if you are talking about the engineering department getting more money than the science department; yeah I dont think any non-alumni care (and most alumni on this board probably wouldn't either).

I just dont see how or why would a non-alumni even be aware of what's going on w/ Shalala and how she is impacting the team to have a stern opinion on her, whether good or bad???

I personally leave those debates up to the ppl on this board who say they are UM alumni or current students b/c they are the 1st ones who would have the information to discuss in the 1st place.

I think it's more brought about by opposing teams fans trying to talk trash to ours. When you go to a road game, you hear, "did you actually go to Miami" and some other nonsense. I remember one game some ******* said that to me, and I replied "yes." His response was "wow, never met one before." I responded by saying, "did you even go to Florida State?" Which he said that he did, and I apologized to him for having attended Florida State.

Now in regards to thinking one is more of a fan or less of a fan if one didn't go to the school, I could care less if you went to UM or not and support the Canes. I am an alumnus of the school, but don't hold myself in any higher regard of any other fan who didn't attend UM.

lulz

I think what I was saying went right over your head. I'm not talking about the school president. I'm comparing most of our non alumni fan base to people who don't vote for the president of the USA then complain about the job he does.

Okay i understand now but i still disagree.... i mean of course there is an example of every type of person in the world so i dont doubt that there are non-alumni who are just like you say they are in your OP. But for the most part I just dont think non-alumni are sitting back complaining about stuff.

The only thing i can comprehend the majority of non-alumni complaining about is the football team not being good for the last decade, but not the "underline" non football reasons why and all that deep technical stuff. Alumni complain about the team not being good too and i believe since they have more invested that they probably are even more boisterous about that subject as well.

Uf isn't a joke to get into. Fsu is though. Idk where u got the idea that uf recently is a joke of an academic school.

I perceived that from 2003-2010 that Alumni were okay with having a team that is more in line with the Duke's and Wake Forest. Nice guys just having fun and 7-9 wins a season is good.

That's just dumb. I don't know a single fan, alumnus or not, who felt that way.

There is definitely a difference in the way alums and non-alums perceive different issues and react to them.

I'm pretty sure Al, Blake and President Shalala don't care if you are an alum or not as long as you support the athletic program and the school. I feel the same way. The more the merrier! I tire of reading unwarranted (as opposed to criticism that is deserved) criticism of the school and athletic department from people who don't support the program and have no stake in the school or the program.

The two guys who attended the scrimmage with me are not alums, and you would be hard pressed to find bigger fans than those two.
