Is beginning to feel like the 2024 DT situation. Obviously, it goes without saying that like DT last year, Mario and staff will continue to recruit any prospect who commits elsewhere and they will continue to recruit them in relentless fashion.
There are essentially 3 CB Whales that Miami is closely associated with this cycle and have established close relationships with. Those are....
1) DJ Pickett
2) Jaboree Antoine
3) Ben Hanks Jr
The Miami staff is clearly going for a sweep of all 3 as that would literally transform our secondary into one of the most talented in the nation. The bad news(for the time being) is that DJ Pickett has committed to LSU and for all the smoke linking Antoine to Miami and a previous decommitment from LSU I'm very dubious about the possibility of getting an elite CB out of the (Louisiana). Antoine may commit to us today but we'll see. Lastly Ben Hanks Jr who IMO is the best, most complete Field CB prospect of the 3 and one of the best pure CB prospects I've seen in years. We are recruiting him extremely hard but he's a florida legacy so who knows.
Let's say for the sake of argument that all 3 commit elsewhere. We already know that Mario will just ratchet up the intensity and relentlessly pursue them until signing day. However until we get any of the 3 to flip what will the plan be going forward for CB this cycle? Who else is on our board that could compare with any of the 3 Whales above? Who would we target in this scenario? I'm no insider but I've heard that we are quietly working on flipping O*U commit CB Naheem Offord. Offord is elite and flipping him to Miami would be insane. However I've learned never to question Mario's ability to do the seemingly impossible in recruiting.
Other than Offord, what would our contingency plan going forward realistically consist of? Who would be on the staff's short list? The portal would certainly be a necessary part of the plan naturally, but aside from that who would the HS targets be? I'm still confident that we end up with a good haul because I know what this staff is capable of.
