The 2023 QB Class

Unless you have a sure-fire 1st round NFL caliber talent that you're going to start as a True FR, it's a waste of time & money spending big on a HS QB.

It's almost a guarantee they're going to hit the Portal.
And even then- who is the last QB to fit this bill? It's a position that benefits from experience and real snaps. You would need some Mormon who played ball on their mission and is starting college at 22 with a mustache.

Yup. In the coming years it’ll be very interesting to see how many programs win an Natty with a QB they signed out of high school. My guess is the answer will be zero.

Don't think it’s a 247 issue. The Composite (which includes every scouting service) had the same Top 5 QBs.
So they suck and everyone else does, because scouts aren't doing the scouting at the very least, but journalists, whose opinion is equal to the opinion of Bill Tobins postman?

It's just a strange time now. You have to keep recruiting the big ones out of high school but I could very easily see us grabbing a top portal QB for the third year in a row in 2026.

Like I been saying on here...

Don't worry about the stars at QB or LB.

They're intangible positions and can't be ranked by measureables. They're the least accurately ranked positions in football. (followed by OL)

RB, WR, DT, DE, DB...go for the stars.
QB and LB... get them in a meeting room... get them on the board.

You think Joseph Smith would’ve been a good QB?

Strikes me as the kind of dude who could talk his way into a huge NIL deal with a P4 school. And then his first year as a starter he throws a ton of picks and blames it on the WRs EVERY TIME.

And then, when Spring rolls around, he pulls a Nico.

2020 5* QBs:
-Young (Signed w Bama): #1 overall pick in 2023 draft

-Uiagalalei (Signed w Clemson -> OrSt -> FSU): Bust

2021 5* QBs:
-Ewers (Signed w/ OSU b4 transferring to UT b4 enrolling):
33-10 record, 2 CFP appearances, 1 Conf Title

-Williams (signed w/ OU -> USC w/ HC): #1 overall pick

-Huard (signed w UW->Pomona->Utah->USC): Bust

-Vadergriff (signed w/ UGA ->UK): Bust *so far

-McCarthy (signed w/ UofM): Nat’l Champion/1st Rd Pick

-McCord (signed w/ OSU -> Syracuse): 21-5 record as starting QB/will be drafted

2022 5* QBs:
-Klubnik (signed w/ Clemson): 2x ACC Champion, 20-9 as starting QB

-Weigman (signed w/ TAMU -> UH): Injuries, could be labeled as a Bust

-Simpson (signed w/ Bama): TBD this season

-Allar (signed w/ PSU): 23-6 record, 1 NY6 bowl, 1 CFP

2024 5* QBs:
-Sayin (signed w/ Bama -> OSU after Saban retired): TBD

-Lagway (signed w/ UF): 6-1 record as starter. Still TBD

-Raiola (signed w/ Nebraska): 7-6 as starter. TBD

Do w/ this info as u will. 2023 is a very interesting situation; however, I would venture to say just being around the industry that just like the NFL draft, some guys r legit worth a 1st - 2nd Rd pick, while others r picked in these rounds due to supply/demand, the same can be said about 5* players at any position.

I agree, but I would still take the wager on Neiman Lawrence. I think you have to throw the money to him and see what he can do. Still time, but seems like we have early momentum, pre-bidding war.

You forgot drake maye for 2021, also is a good group of high 4 star qbs in 2021. Milroe/Dart/Salter/Moss/Nuss/Drones/Sawyer.

This transfer or highschool debate should go further than just 5 stars. We shouldn’t just be taking projects or 3 star game managers every year lol @DMoney..I think u agree with that tho

I was gonna say, 247 has actually been better these last maybe 5-6 years with their qb rankings..Maybe the top players going to top programs help but qbs is hard to evaluate only on tape so they have been pretty solid lately imo

And to me if a guy is a multi year starter in the p5 i wouldn't call them a bust unless they’re just flat out one of the worst qbs like dj u was lol. If they just never see the field in power5 then yea bust. Fans say they dont care for stars but they always put the highest expectations on 5stars

Tennessee is an interesting case study.

They had a Portal QB in 2022. He got drafted. They had a new Portal QB in 2023. He got drafted.

They also won a bidding war for Nico out of high school. Their reward was the 93rd-ranked passing offense and a public humiliation in April.

Oh come they deserve it!! Couldn't have been more deserving for the Vols.
