Telling stat

Im not sure this stat is as telling as it might seem. There are different scenarios for different recruits. The 4 and 5 star recruits rarely redshirt. 2 and 3 star recruits likely should. So a team that is landing a higher margin of 4 & 5 star recruits might have less redshirts than a team with less.

In UM's case, it was clear that Golden was handed a roster full of holes. It was not possible for him to redshirt ANY kid that could contribute.

Just too many variables for this stat to be "telling" in any direct way.

Good data points though, Miz. Always worth discussing. If you're up for it, please add some other programs redshirt roster numbers.

I'd like to see what our attrition rate is compared to other teams. I don't know why, but ours seems high.

This is a good question. There's no doubt golden inherited a team with many holes but by year four he should have solid depth and if he doesn't well that's an al golden problem.

Ridiculous again. Playing experience is just as good as red shirting. Players who are not physically developed are more dependent on redshirting. If you have players play two full seasons in a system. Its no excuse they can't execute like second nature as a JR. U are not getting many top players to redshirt. Stop making excuses

I just wanted to compare our roster to a couple other teams as far as Red Shirting players goes and wow!!! Since Mizzou is my second team and FSU won it all last year I compared how many RS players we each have on our roster. These numbers have not accounted for the incoming freshman yet so keep that in mind as well. Here is the breakdown:

Miami - 18
Mizzou: 64
FSU: 34

I figured us and FSU would have less RS players then Mizzou because we get much better recruiting classes and a lot more highly rated players year to year that can contribute as a true frosh. But when you see how low our number is it is very telling how far away we are as far as depth goes. FSU has out recruited us 5 straight years yet they are still able to RS kids that we would prob play their first year here which also puts us behind.

I know everyone likes to **** at coaching especially the D side but let's look deeper and see why we were so bad other then bad play calling. There aren't many excuses for as putrid we were the last couple years but this to me is a symptom no one really talks about. We need to stockpile and develop players a lot more. This year alone Golden has already mentioned at least 10 true frosh that will get PT.

You know what a telling stat is?

6-6, 7-5, 9-4.

This year we will have 10, 11, 12 or more victories and our coaches will still get ragged.

I dont understand why people think total defense is somehow a superior stat to total wins. Everyone likes to say it was the schedule, that was the reason we won 9 games. Going by that logic if we win 9 games this season thats an improvement because we play a tougher schedule. You are what your record says you are, our record shows consistent improvement. Ill roll with that til I have reason to think otherwise.

This will be the last year I think you see a ton of Freshmen play. It has taken these 4 years to start and get depth where it needs to be.

That's so true - as long as we win 9+ games, I could care less about the rank of the D.

I pointed out in a thread a few weeks back. When we lost a player from attrition and people said it happens every where.

Bama over the past 3 seasons. Have averaged 5 players per class, no longer with the team. 2011 (6) 2012 (5) 2013 (4)

In that same thread. Someone posted that in the past 4 cycles we have lost 27 of 99 players, one way or another.

We haven't had depth, now we do at most positions so we may see more kids redshirt. But at the same time it's a great selling point to recruits that we play young guys if you come in ready to work.

Because 9 wins is all that matters.

Really not all that different then. So Bama averaged 5 per class, we averaged 6.75. Not surprising that we would have more because during the NCAA mess we didn't have the luxury of picking and choosing recruits we wanted. We took a lot of marginal players to try to provide some level of depth. Now that the quality players are starting to come back, a lot of those marginal players are seeing the writing on the wall and getting out while they can because they know they will never see the field here.

That 2012 class of 32 recruits was ranked 10th nationally.

Only 18 of that 32 remain.
thanks to Thread Killa for that stat.

How is losing over half of one class similar to Alabama. Like I said, golden inherited a team with lots of depth issues and holes but either poor evaluation or poor character evaluations on Goldens part has played a role in how long it's taken for that depth to be built up again.

Poor evaluations and poor character evaluations is probable. Unlike Alabama, Golden was dealing with the NCAA, which in turn affects recruiting, ergo affects the depth chart.

You are finally starting to understand how the NCAA truly affected us.

No, consistent improvement is all that matters, wins are a better indication of that then total defense.

A has nothing to do with B.

So that wouldn't be improvement...

ACC Record 13-11

According to Oblivion's post Alabama averaged 5 per year lost. We lost 27 over 4 years, which is 6.75/year on average. So if those numbers that he presented are accurate, the fact that the bulk of them came from one class doesn't change the long-term average. Given the VERY different scenarios that the two teams were under, one was in the middle of a winning streak, one was in the middle of a coaching change following a terrible coach, followed by an NCAA issue that most certainly impacted recruiting. As I stated, the expectation of losing more players under those conditions is to be expected because we couldn't be as picky with players, so more would be players who don't fit the culture and expectations of the team, and even more importantly, more of them weren't good enough to expect to see any playing time once we were able to start recruiting as we should, so the sought playing time elsewhere.

Could have swore this was going to turn into a "what do you mean 2nd team?" thread.
