I just wanted to compare our roster to a couple other teams as far as Red Shirting players goes and wow!!! Since Mizzou is my second team and FSU won it all last year I compared how many RS players we each have on our roster. These numbers have not accounted for the incoming freshman yet so keep that in mind as well. Here is the breakdown:

Miami - 18
Mizzou: 64
FSU: 34

I figured us and FSU would have less RS players then Mizzou because we get much better recruiting classes and a lot more highly rated players year to year that can contribute as a true frosh. But when you see how low our number is it is very telling how far away we are as far as depth goes. FSU has out recruited us 5 straight years yet they are still able to RS kids that we would prob play their first year here which also puts us behind.

I know everyone likes to ***** at coaching especially the D side but let's look deeper and see why we were so bad other then bad play calling. There aren't many excuses for as putrid we were the last couple years but this to me is a symptom no one really talks about. We need to stockpile and develop players a lot more. This year alone Golden has already mentioned at least 10 true frosh that will get PT.

Its Coach Golden and Coach D fault...they have no clue.

clouds, injuries, players having nothing to do with wins and losses

we do have a training table now

I think we have enough to get something done this year. no more excuses. our D is overflowing with 4 stars.

Cute thread. The more telling stat is that every ******* team we played other than fsu (who smashed us again) had their best offensive game of the season. Sme other telling stats are 3rd down conversions on both sides of the ball. Some other telling stats would be the score against every good team we've played since golden got here.

The cloud the cloud. Randy randy randy

Put up or shut up in year 4. I'm as optimistic as anybody about this year, I think this team has serious experience and breakout potential. But I'm sick of these mitigating threads aimed to say "all considered things haven't really been that bad? Right?". They have.

Been a long ******* offseason to stew on the beat downs. Ready for some football.

players have nothing to do with wins and losses?

really? how many hours of game tape leads to this philosophy?

so coley and burns fumbling against virginia tech didn’t lead to the outcome of that game at all

not when you make Lolgan Thomas look like Joe Montana, converting 1st downs at will.

Would rather see how we compare to VT, UNC, GT, and the team from Durham as it relates to Redshirt players

Stay blind to this fact and keep hoping for miracles. The coaches are to blame for the poor play on the field but if you want to keep hiding from the fact we haven't been able to develop players the past 6-7 years you are ******* blind. This directly correlates to our poor play. We haven't had enough legit true frosh that are good enough to play that have been forced into action. This year is legitimately the first year we can say we have pretty decent depth. I expect a Coastal title this year. I'm just pointing out where we stand compared to a couple other teams with stability. Coach D has to go if we lose more then 3 games this year. Coley has a lot to prove as well but I think any of the 3 QB's will play more steady then Morris and convert 3rd downs this year.

telling stat, we've had terrible numbers since Coker and then had self imposed recruiting restrictions and insane amount of turnover. I expect more redshirts each year.

RS is getting rare in CFB due to 3 and out...
if you look at who has RS and who was 4 or 5 stars ( one or two 5) we have to play 4 star guys asap...

its been a depth issue here since Randy more on the D side than O...
Under Coker we had Depth a D but the O suffered..

When we can sit 4 star guys for a year like the Big guys than we are back..

I dont see this until maybe 2016...
We are Rs players that will see lil action our stars are playing from Day one..
Golden has worked his *** off getting players in here for Jan for a reason..

This is a very valid point and something that too many fans, especially the younger "win now dammit" crowd overlook.

It is critical in the college game to develop experienced players. Its also critical to have quality depth. That is something this program has lacked for a long time. Now, you can dish out a lot of blame for it, and YES, some of it falls on Golden, but not all of it. A lot of it goes back to Shannon and the disaster he left the roster in. Golden had a terrible first/transition recruiting class, the NCAA mess definitely hurt in getting some important players that could have really helped this team, we had a slew of guys leave early forcing young guys to be thrown into the fire prematurely, and then bad luck with LB depth two years in a row, losing EJ, Terry, Figs and Blue. I mean think about what our LB corps would look like with EJ and Figs starting next to DP. THAT HURT. No two ways about it.

This is not to absolve Golden. He's made mistakes. His and Donofrio's defense has been unacceptable and they have not found a way to put the players in a best position to succeed. That said, we have really had a lack of talent, experience and depth on Defense the last few years. Last year we finally had SOME talent, but it was very young. Guys like Howard, AQM, Burns, and now Grace and Carter are all very young and just starting to come into their own. Going forward the excuses for Golden and Donofrio are going to be less and less. They may not have a championship caliber defense or talent, but they will have SOME talent, enough to field a respectable D. If they don't, then its obvious they aren't the men for the job.

RS is more important on D than it is on O. On O, its mostly the OL that benefits from RS. Maybe a QB. But your skill guys you will see many play as true Frosh or be on the 2-3 deep. ON D, the only guys who can really do that are CBs. Maybe the occasional S. LBs and guys on the DL really need RS. Those positions take time to learn, and you need the right size to play them well. That is what has really hurt us IMO.

I'd feel a lot better if they had sprung for the optional rolling casters.

So player attrition doesn't factor into this? How many players have left the team from 2011 to 2013?

You know what a telling stat is?

6-6, 7-5, 9-4.

This year we will have 10, 11, 12 or more victories and our coaches will still get ragged.
