Talent at Miami

I don't think the rankings of high school players is any more accurate now. There may be more people doing the rankings, but that doesn't translate to more accurate. It's always a crap shoot with any particular kid.

And where were the Duke Blue Devils on that list?

Just because you are more talented than another team doesn't GUARANTEE you will win, it just means the PROBABILITY you will win is higher.

You ever gamble? It's all about the odds.

Say having 10 more 4/5 stars than your opponent gives you an 80% chance of winning. That means if you play 10 teams who you are more talented than, chances are you will win 8 and lose 2.

Using the list in the OP, it looks like we should be more talented than every team on our schedule except for Florida State. Does that mean we're going to go 11-1?

No probably not.

We're not to the point yet where we're THAT much more talented than other teams to where we can just beat them down on talent alone. I think 8-10 wins is more reasonable.

But Duke had less talent then many , if not all of the teams on that list, yet they achieved more. What's the difference? Luck? Because the odds say Duke should have been in the crapper yet again, but they won the Costal.

Let's see what they do next year. Same coach, same schemes. If they win the coastal again then it's more than luck.

A friend of mine sent this to me weeks ago. Some article on the net.

Hurricanes (4 and 5 star player totals):

2006: 46
2007: 45
2008: 42
2009: 42
2010: 40
2011: 28
2012: 28
2013: 23
2014: 27

Having 40 or more 4 and 5 star players is of course not a guarantee for success. For example, the University of Texas has easily had over 40 four star players each year for a decade and has not produced much in the way of results while Miami did not go under the 40 player threshold until Shannon's reign. But having highly rated players certainly raises the odds of success.

For a quick further comparison of roster strength in during 2006 and 2013 (the lowest year), let's look at the number of 4 and 5 star players by position. And I'll throw in 2014 as well just for fun:

Quarterback:
2006: (2) Freeman, Wright
2013: (1) Olsen
2014: (2) KAYAA, Olsen

Wide Receiver:
2006: (4) Moore, Jenkins, Leggett, Shields
2013: (2) Coley, Lewis
2014: (3) BERRIOS, Coley, Lewis

Tight End:
2006: (5) Epps, Farr, Fox, Gordon, Olsen
2013: (1) Sandland
2014: (1) Sandland

Running Back:
2006: (4) Moss, J James, Johnson, Jones
2013: (2) Clements, Johnson
2014: (2) Johnson, YEARBY

Offensive Line:
2006: (5) Pou, Brain, Barney, Trump, Youngblood
2013: (4) Bunche, Flowers, Henderson, Linder
2014: (5) Bunche, DARLING, GIBBONS, Flowers, MCDERMOTT

Defensive Line:
2006: (11) Abdallah, Anderson, Brown, Campbell, Dixon, Franklin, Harris, Hendricks, Holmes, Moncur, Pata
2013: (5) Chickillo, Hamilton, McCord, Muhammad, L Robinson
2014: (7) Chickillo, Hamilton, JACKSON, McCord, MOTEN, Muhammad, C THOMAS

Linebacker:
2006: (5) Adkins, Beason, Bryant, Gooden, Robinson
2013: (2) Grace, Kirby
2014: (2) Grace, Kirby

Defensive Backs:
2006: (6) Cooper, Johnson, K Philips, R Philips, Sharpe, Walden
2013: (5) Burns, Bush, Carter, Elder, Howard
2014: (6) Burns, Bush, Carter, Elder, HESTER, Howard

Special Teams:
2006: (1) Peattie
2013: none
2014: none

Having 40 or more doesn't GUARANTEE success, but it at least puts you in the discussion.

Both teams who played for the national championship last year were in the top 5 of my list.

Can you think of ONE team in the past decade who has won a national championship with fewer than 35?

Without doing any research, I'd probably say no to answer the question asked, but there are some teams who maybe could have if the NCAA wasn't bent on always making sure the SEC was in the title game. OK ST who should have been in the title game instead of Alabama a few years back, could have been one. Then we have to consider all the other undefeated non BCS teams who never got a shot at the title game are other potentials. I'd also like to point out the Oregon Auburn game that Oregon likely would have won if everyone didn't think Dyer was down (not sure on Oregon's star count).

agree to disagree, everyone who saw Alex Collins for example knew he was as advertised. 5 star player we needed and would not have skipped a beat with him when duke went down, I'm all about the rankings in 2014 especially the DL. If it's 1990 then I would agree with you but I want the Cooks Coopers Valentines MT6. It is why we are mediocre, those kids change this program and how we view the staff today.

Agree, but now we have Duke, Yearby, and Gus... and the commits we have at RB look pretty good as well. So it's OK to miss every now and then.

Totally agree that having Collins last year would have made a big difference for us though.

What 6 do you see drafted next year? That is an amazingly sad statistic. Showed just how poorly we have recruited in the last bunch of years. It also shows how much it has affected this current staff. Just look at the past two classes, and especially this last one now that the "cloud" is gone. I think the reason this recruiting cycle is slowing down is because there is so much to be desired from the staff as a whole. I think if we can get to ten wins we will land a great class. I think last yrs was a really good class as well, and had the chance to be amazing. Thanks for posting the info...

The six I had listed.
Perryman, Feliciano. McDermott will be a late round pick. Pierre is physically the ideal 3-4 end and shows versatility playing DT as well. He will be drafted. Gunter will be a mid to late round pick as the NFL will continue its newfound infatuation with big corners.
Dorsett will be picked simply for his 4.3 speed plus he has ability.

That's six right there who, for star whores, were 3 star and under high school recruits.

Throw in Chickillo who will be a 3-5 round pick, Duke who could go anywhere from the 1st-3rd round, Flowers who could be a 1st-2nd round pick, and Tracy who, despite the haters, is a legit cover corner and will be a 2nd-3rd round pick, and you have some serious draft picks.

I think you're over-rating our guys a little bit. McDermott ain't goin nowhere and Pierre hasn't done a single thing yet. Gunter is questionable. Chickillo doesn't even have a position in the NFL cause he's currently a tweener, too small for 3-4 DE and not explosive enough for 4-3 DE.

Wide Receiver:
2013: (2) Coley, Lewis (DNP much)
2014: (3) BERRIOS, Coley, Lewis

Lewis barely played last year while recovering from injury.

Tight End:
2013: (1) Sandland (DNP much)

Sandland was still adjusting to DI football all year.

Running Back:
2013: (2) Clements, Johnson (INJ after 7-0 start)

Defensive Line:

Our most talented guys were Freshmen and Sophmores.

Linebacker:
2013: (2) Grace (DNP much), Kirby
2014: (2) Grace, Kirby

Neither played much last year.

Defensive Backs:
2013: (5) Burns, Bush (INJ), Carter (DNP much), Elder (INJ), Howard
2014: (6) Burns, Bush, Carter, Elder, HESTER, Howard

Bush and Elder was hurt most of the year. ALL underclassmen last year with 3 true frshmen. This year will be diferent.

Special Teams:
2013: none
2014: none

7 out of the 22 listed from last year were true freshmen. Sandland was also a first year guy.

15 of the 22 were first or second year players.

Our 7 upperclssmen were: Sandland, Clements, Bunche, Henderson, Linder, Chickillo, Robinson. Name me one impact guy from this list. Only 2 were fulltime starters (Linder, Chickillo) and one of them is coming back.

I'm not sure if our team will be better this year, but they will definitely be more experienced and talented on paper.

This is a pretty good article though, goes to show how ****ty Randy Shannon's recruiting really was. Those '09 and '10 classes really gutted our talent level.

The large drop off was in 11. We went from 40 to 28 4/5 star players. Not sure exactly how that was on Randy except his last year here.

Think about it...

It'll come to you.

LOL, yeah

year 4/5 star
2006 12
2007 12
2008 11
2009 8
2010 6
2011 3
2012 8
2013 9
2014 9

Chickillo went to the draft advisory board after his junior year to see what his draft status would be and they said 5th round.

A friend of mine sent this to me weeks ago. Some article on the net.

Hurricanes (4 and 5 star player totals):

Quarterback:
2013: (1) Olsen (DNP)
2014: (2) KAYAA, Olsen

Our 3 star QB last year was injuried and very inconsistent. Our 4 star QBs this year will be RS Freshman and Freshman.

Wide Receiver:
2013: (2) Coley, Lewis (DNP)
2014: (3) BERRIOS, Coley, Lewis

Lewis barely played last year while recovering from injury.

Tight End:
2013: (1) Sandland (DNP)
2014: (1) Sandland

Sandland was still adjusting to DI football all year.

Running Back:
2013: (2) Clements, Johnson (INJ)
2014: (2) Johnson, YEARBY

We were 7-0 before Duke went down and I think we would have won at 2 more games with Duke.

Offensive Line:
2013: (4) Bunche, Flowers, Henderson, Linder
2014: (5) DARLING, Flowers, MCDERMOTT

Our best OL was a true Soph last year.

Defensive Line:
2013: (5) Chickillo, Hamilton, McCord, Muhammad, L Robinson
2014: (7) Chickillo, Hamilton, JACKSON, McCord, MOTEN, Muhammad, C THOMAS

Our most talented guys were Frshmen and Sophmores.

Linebacker:
2013: (2) Grace, Kirby
2014: (2) Grace, Kirby

Neither played much last year.

Defensive Backs:
2013: (5) Burns, Bush, Carter, Elder, Howard
2014: (6) Burns, Bush, Carter, Elder, HESTER, Howard

Bush and Elder was hurt most of the year. ALL underclassmen last year with 3 true frshmen. This year will be diferent.

Special Teams:
2013: none
2014: none

7 out of the 22 listed from last year were true freshmen. Sandland was also a first year guy.

15 of the 22 were first or second year players.

Our upperclssmen were: Sandland, Clements, Bunche, Henderson, Linder, Chickillo, Robinson. Name me one impact guy from this list. Only 2 were fulltime starters (Linder, Chickillo)

And Clements had concussion problems so he couldn't even play for us.

2006: 46
2007: 45
2008: 42
2009: 42
2010: 40
2011: 28
2012: 28
2013: 23
2014: 27

Having 40 or more 4 and 5 star players is of course not a guarantee for success. For example, the University of Texas has easily had over 40 four star players each year for a decade and has not produced much in the way of results while Miami did not go under the 40 player threshold until Shannon's reign. But having highly rated players certainly raises the odds of success.

For a quick further comparison of roster strength in during 2006 and 2013 (the lowest year), let's look at the number of 4 and 5 star players by position. And I'll throw in 2014 as well just for fun:

Quarterback:
2006: (2) Freeman, Wright
2013: (1) Olsen
2014: (2) KAYAA, Olsen

Wide Receiver:
2006: (4) Moore, Jenkins, Leggett, Shields
2013: (2) Coley, Lewis
2014: (3) BERRIOS, Coley, Lewis

Tight End:
2006: (5) Epps, Farr, Fox, Gordon, Olsen
2013: (1) Sandland
2014: (1) Sandland

Running Back:
2006: (4) Moss, J James, Johnson, Jones
2013: (2) Clements, Johnson
2014: (2) Johnson, YEARBY

Offensive Line:
2006: (5) Pou, Brain, Barney, Trump, Youngblood
2013: (4) Bunche, Flowers, Henderson, Linder
2014: (5) Bunche, DARLING, GIBBONS, Flowers, MCDERMOTT

Defensive Line:
2006: (11) Abdallah, Anderson, Brown, Campbell, Dixon, Franklin, Harris, Hendricks, Holmes, Moncur, Pata
2013: (5) Chickillo, Hamilton, McCord, Muhammad, L Robinson
2014: (7) Chickillo, Hamilton, JACKSON, McCord, MOTEN, Muhammad, C THOMAS

Yeah, I don't think Golden's numbers are accurate either. We didn't get everyone in that signed. I think they are off by a couple.
