Talent at Louisville vs Miami

This is going to be a very close game. Both defenses won't stop anyone. So it will be Petrino vs Dorito, James Coley vs Todd Grantham's new 3-4 scheme.

Advantage, Petrino.

And therefore, by your above conclusion, we will most likely lose this game.

Not really. I think Louisville might have a god-awful defense next year, especially early on. They don't look very talented, and they are breaking in a new defensive coaching staff with a whole 'mother philosophy and playbook.

If we get good play out of the QB and we can make a few key plays on defense (they will score their points and gain yards on us, but this is gonna be a shootout) then I think we're the better team.

Fair enough, I don't agree with your assessment though. In a shootout I think we lose. I agree that they will do their fair share of scoring against us, but I'm a bit skeptical as to wether or not we can keep pace with them. I don't think our offense is designed to be a fast-paced, score quick squad. "If we get good play out of the QB" is a big if, especially in the first game of the season. Our best shot at winning this game, IMO, is controlling the ball, silencing the crowd, keeping Petrino's offense off of the field, and forcing a few stops/mistakes.

That's what Louisville is thinking too. They highly respect what Duke Johnson can do, and the plan is to concentrate on stopping him, since they figure our QB situation pretty much sucks.

THEN, they figure - based on strong evidence - that Petrino will run offense like Miami hasn't seen in a long time, against a proven, weak defense, unable to adjust. They likewise figure their spread attacking passing game can't be stopped, and certainly not by Miami.

I was curious about what they were discussing on Cardinal Sports, and it's interesting reading. No bragging, no flash. Analysis.

I think that's fair, I just don't believe they have the personnel to fit Todd Grantham's 3-4. Remember they brought this guy over from Georgia and think about the kind of player he had over there vs what Charlie Strong was running.

They can talk about stopping Duke and hoping that our QB situation sucks worse than theirs does, but between you and me I don't buy it.

I don't think Heaps is a drop off at all from what we had with Morris, and I think they'll be an absolute mess on defense.

Question is - will Louisville adapt the passive, two-gap crap we use, or will they be a swarming, attacking 3-4? Because it's much easier to execute a very effective 3-4 when you're not standing there out of play for two seconds reading and hesitating.

I'm pretty sure Georgia just ran a straight ole two-gapping 3-4.

“Our d-line has not totally dominated, but has controlled the line of scrimmage as far as runs are concerned,” Richt said. “We’re finally beginning to pressure better without blitzing, and that’s helped. We do have a veteran bunch of DBs that are strong physically, fast and are good cover guys.

“Our linebackers have been banged up a little bit, but the front end and the back end have played so well that it’s really helped the young linebackers make some plays because the d-linemen are forcing double teams and letting these guys get some free hits.”

We won't be within 3 TDs in the thrid qtr. My God! Did ANY of you go to the Russell Bowl? I did. Here's the Cliff Notes: Miami will be worse in '14 than they were in '13. UL will be better. UM was embarrassed, to a point that it ranks up there with the poorest performances in Canes, if not college football, history.

UL has a better coach on Labor Day than the one who made a complete idiot out of Golden 6 months ago.

What the duece? Do you not sere that we get blown out?

Conventional wisdom among the group here are of the opinion that we win at least ten games, and some think we only get beaten by FSU - once.

There's a lot of them who agree and speak most positively.

It's going to be an interesting game. Sort of like a bullet-proof BS detector.

Louisville's oline is not a strength

Their depth on defense is atrocious.

Charlie a Strong left at the right time.....yes Loserville does have some WRs, and their corners are pretty good.....but that's where it stops as far as top end talent.

Nah....

They have Jake Smith, the third ranked center in the draft

They have John Miller, the eighth ranked guard in the draft.

They have Jamon Brown, the fourteenth ranked OT in the draft.

(for comparison's sake, Shane McDermott is the 13th ranked center and Jon Feliciano is the 13th ranked guard)

That's three future NFL offensive linemen they have lining up against us. Gotta respect that.

Naah..you're wrong.
If you even read Louisville boards they will admit that their Oline was a liability last year....and isn't a strength this year. Their oline is not as good as you say....but keep reading your NFL draft sources that are usually not too accurate before the season starts. In fact Jake Smith is currently scheduled to be playing guard next season...his supposed natural position according to the Louisville folk....currently....and things could change but right now they have a former walk on penciled in as the starter at center. Additionally, after the season they had 3 backups, some of whom saw significant playing time last season, leave the team leaving their depth a mess.

And where does this NFL draft source put E Flowers? Thanks for not bringing him up in your argument too.
Thanks for playing though

Flowers isn't a senior so he isn't on any of the draft boards yet. He is listed among the 4/5 stars that we signed though, if you go back and read the OP.

Three projected NFL players is three projected NFL players. I don't care if they're switching their best one from center to guard.

You don't like the projections, take it up with CBSSports. I'm not a talent scout.

Exactly...you just pulled random numbers to try and pull an argument to your favor....but you screwed up

But you still could have included E Flowers. My post was to you...not the OP...hence I quoted you

I am the OP.

I was referring to your thread that I quoted you clown.....but if you want to do some of your own research instead of just pulling random crap from CBSsports, let me know.

By the way, what did CBSsports's draft projections look like this time last year....how accurate were they?

Talent has nothing to do with us losing or not. Only FSU has more talent than us in the ACC. Maybe Clemson might have more, but that's it. Now the real question is how you use that talent, and that's what really matters, that's why Duke won the Coastal last year. It wasn't because they had talent.

One variable in all of this is that the Labor Day game is traditionally ugly. There is a reason most teams play an FCS team to open up. This game will have some sloppy plays by both teams being the first game of the year.

I also don't understand the thought that Petrino is a better coach than Strong. Don't buy it at all. Maybe offensively but Charlie Strong is a very good football coach and UF made a big mistake choosing Muschamp over him.

So your argument has come down to "CBSSports doesn't know talent like I do."

Fine. Whatever. Take it up with them, I don't care.

Think long and hard before you say winning/losing is all to do with coaching. Here's David Cutcliffe's complete record as a head coach.

1999 Ole Miss 8–4
2000 Ole Miss 7–5
2001 Ole Miss 7–4
2002 Ole Miss 7–6
2003 Ole Miss 10–3
2004 Ole Miss 4–7
2008 Duke 4–8
2009 Duke 5–7
2010 Duke 3–9
2011 Duke 3–9
2012 Duke 6–7
2013 Duke 10–4

Heck of a coach, but it's not like he just learned to coach this season...

Not exactly sure what point you are trying to prove. Duke went 10-4 last year (including a victory against us) with way less talent than we had. We had the talent last year. We have even more talent this year, that is not the issue; and in Miami it never should be.

Well, in 9 out of his 12 years as a head coach, Cutcliffe has won fewer games than Miami did last year.

Petrino vs Golden is weighted more than anything you just said IMO

Maybe, but what I've said takes away the talent excuse because it's pretty obvious the talent is very close.

Most likely coaching will determine this game.

The talent isn't close at all. Miami has far more talent.
Louisville might have more draft ready players but that's because strong developed them.
And Petrino will put them in a position to succeed.

Talent = ability

Miami has far more players w far greater ability.
I credit Golden w recruiting that.

As far as I've seen, Louisville has far greater coaching.

You may have been at the game, but you clearly know nothing about football. Miami will be worse this year? Let's see, better running back situation, better receiver situation, strong o-line, tight end upgrade with Dobard in the rotation, QB unknown, but given what Morris was, it could be an upgrade, at worst a small downgrade. Defense? Better secondary by FAR than last year. Actual football players starting at safety now. Still weak, but improved, DTs. Upgrades on DE all around, with lots of depth. Biggest weakness being linebackers due to lack of depth, but if Owens and Young are what they seem to be, it may be better than expected.

Louisville. Lost best QB they've had in their history. Lost some top O-linemen and defensive players. Defense will be playing first game in a completely new scheme.

Where is Miami worse and 'Ville better?

Georgia Defense was horrible last year and i mean horrible possibly worst than ours that DC had more talent at georgia than he does at Lville , and for some reason i can see them stacking the box to stop duke (they believe our WR are easily stopped) thats where dorsett is going to play a huge role and if we're able to take the top off that defense (wich shouldnt be to hard) since they are breaking in two new suspect safetys it will completely change the ball game , i like our d line this year and last year we got a bit of pressure on teddy wich he got away from but gardner is no way near what teddy is those throws teddy made in the RAB only one player can make and his name is teddy so i do see us winning this game
