Swasey to Golden - I see your 40/10 and raise you 50/20

There was several interviews where the players openly admitted to not eating breakfast, and eating fast food for dinner etc....Nutrition wasnt a priority with the previous staff

It's hard to eat breakfast when you're practicing at 4 AM to avoid apocalyptic lightning storms.

Outstanding convo in this thread, Fellas.

The interesting thing about this thread is that it essentially ends one of the longest-running Canes message board debates: was strength & conditioning a problem?

It clearly was.

Swasey caught a lot of flak (and perhaps deservedly so), but the root-cause was ultimately the head coach who didn't have proper optimization guidelines (nutrition, weight room performance, etc...) in place.

Bingo.

These are 18-22 yo kids we are talking about. If they don't have a proper plan to follow, the chances that they will come in and do their own research on nutrition and such is slim to none. IMO, it wasn't all Swasey's fault. I believe he can be effective but the kids need to be motivated and have a plan to follow as well.

Yea honestly I remember when I used to follow all the cane players on twitter, a lot of their tweets went something like...."Bout to go in on this Mickey Ds." or "**** I'm fiending some Taco Bell." or "Someone wanna bring me some BK."

No lie I would write back to as many of them as I could just saying Dude. You play football. Stop eating horrible *** **** all the time. I guess I was just frustrated that our team looked soft *** **** on the field and then would read all these tweets throughout game week.

Seems like Golden has put an emphasis on improving the player's nutrition and diet. You can work out as hard as you want, but you still have to eat relatively well.

Listen, you can take all the HGH and steroids like Ronnie Coleman, it still aint gonna do **** if you dont got the diet down and getting enough protein..etc

Every aspect of the entire football program is the HC's responsibility. For instance, Stoutland seemed like a weakest link while here but he goes to Bama and his O-line excels under Saban and he had a National Championship ring now. **** flows downhill.

Part of the issue is definitely recruiting kids who want to be beasts in the weight room, there's no doubt. With that many players its pretty easy to fake your way through a workout if it isn't strict enough. If a coach doesn't put an emphasis on S&C and nutrition then why would the players who look up to him and try and do what they are told?

Its an unfortunate part of the last few years that I am ecstatic to see gone.

Hmm. I don't think too many people considered Stoutland a weak link.

Well his O-lines were turrible his entire tenure at Miami. When he was shown the door after year #5 our O-line was the most penalized in the NCAA. Kehoe cut those penalties in half last year and produced a 1,000 yard rusher behind his O-line in the first year. Is that all on Kehoe or does Golden get some credit?

Golden has created an atmosphere for any type of mentality to excel. Goldens masters in sports psychology is why everybody is working hard and "buying in". Every personality is different and Golden knows how to manage those personalities.

I am not saying you are completely wrong or anything but I think in most peoples opinion, including my own, our line was better in Stout lands last year than it was last season with possibly less talent on paper. Not trying to make a big deal out of it though.

Agree with JHall. There's a reason Stoutland got hired at Alabama and Kehoe was still looking for a job.

I don't agree at all. On paper doesn't tell the whole story. Miami faced numerous injuries and still managed to cut the penalties in half and produce a 1,000 yard rusher with new starters as well. Again, I think Stoutland is a top notch O-line coach as is Kehoe and more of this had to do with who is HC rather than either of them. When you have a disciplinarian running the entire show expect discipline.

In short, thank god Randy is gone.
