Spring Practice 3/29 - Early Portion Notes

Jones is still starting on the o line? Scary. I thought first week was because of mat drills but second week? Did the light finally come on?

**The QB's had a solid day again, but this is something that should be expected with no defense/pass rush. The only throw off the mark was a low and away skinny post route to from Cade Weldon to walk-on TE Nicholas Ducheine. Malik Rosier and N'Kosi Perry continue to lead the way, but Jarren Williams is also proving himself on Greentree. That despite the fourth string Williams having to throw to the 5'9 140 pound equipment manager when the Canes work the QB/TE drills since there's only three TE's on the roster, which is really funny to watch.

**The QB throwing routes today were bubble screens, fake pitch weakside rollout, skinny post up the middle, and out routes.

**QB's also spent some time working on the RB draw with the running backs out of the shotgun today, the first running plays we've seen. Travis Homer and Deejay Dallas continue to mainly split first team reps, but Lorenzo Lingard has also gotten a few looks with the first team as well.

**The story of early practice was the tight ends, who looked like they found a groove a bit today. There were zero drops, a first in spring practice. Mark Richt looked to be paying a little more attention to the group today, helping Todd Hartley coach them up.

**The receivers didn't work at all with the QB's in the early viewing part of practice today.

**The offensive line and team defense depth charts remained the same from last week, which can be found *here*.

**Derrick Smith and Waynmon Steed seem to be benefiting the most from Zach McCloud's absence (McCloud is out for the rest of spring with a wrist injury). The two have taken the extra opportunity and run with it, especially Steed (working mostly at WILL behind Michael Pinckney) who really needed this spring to prove he is fully healthy. He has done that and more. Smith continues to be used in his hybrid LB/S role by Manny Diaz, playing down at the line of scrimmage at times and making tackles at the line, while also spending time covering the slot receiver. He seems poised for a big role in 2018.

**Post-Practice UPDATE: The entire defense was made to stay on the field after practice and do wall-sits for about 5 or so minutes. Manny Diaz said it was because the energy and intensity was lacking from the unit today, as well as wanting to teach the new guys the standard at UM. Also, Mark Pope was out at practice today, joined by recruits South Dade WR Frank Ladson and 2020 Miami Central DB Henry Gray.
Who had the strongest arm on the out routes?

I am NOT on the "Trash MI2" team.

I actually think he will be a great help to the team this season and will make all of you eat crow.

I am probably alone in thinking that.

I just think we are throwing that young man under the bus far too quick. Yes, he grew up wanting for nothing so mayne he needs a stiffer kick in the rear. Let these coaches try to mold that clay.

Im happy to see the TEs as a whole are improving.

I am not one to throw a kid under the bus but criticism of him has been warranted to some extent. He was a highly regarded TE coming out of STA (although a 3 star) which carries expectations in addition to the expectations that come with his name. This is now his 3rd year on the team and what does he have to show for it? Reports of a lack of desire, out of shape, getting in trouble off the field, etc.

Look I, like i'm sure everyone else one here, wants to see him do well and the opportunity is there for him to step up. However, the real criticism comes from him squandering his opportunity when he has the god given abilities and platform to do so.

I know yall are only allowed out for a few but im not sure whats being seen in that period. Malik for the last two practices has looked atrocious. Nkosi & jarren are consistently better at this point. Jarren in particular had a great day(nkosi had a great tuesday) other notes throughout the day are defense as a whole looked pitiful today ( hence the wall sits and up downs) nephew caught two more bombs & put amari on his ***. Speaking of amari he may have shown today how much he wants that job. One of the hardest cleanest hits ive ever seen today on Lo when he was running a draw. I was worried for lo for a minute. Thats one tough kid. Cant see any way amari doesnt start this year. Hes gotten more physically & mentally mature and hes making his reps count. Lets all say a quick prayer for gurvan. He got shook off the line by marshall few. Fell down holding his knee screaming & didnt come back. Has mri tomorrow. Hopefully it was just a tweek. Also same way staff has been raving about rouseau theyre doing the same about dj ivey. As plenty on here that follow football have stated that kid is the real deal. It was a blessing for us that he had the injury junior year otherwise he wouldve got alot more attention. Cant wait to watch him develope & hes a great kid too. Deserves everything coming his way.

I hope Gurvan is okay because he's a special talent, but I like what I'm hearing out of my apprentice

Wall sits. They feel stupid easy to do at first.....but as the minutes roll by, quads just get smoked. 5 minutes of that sucks.

Thanks for the update. Cats are starving for info around this time of year. Every little bit helps. I'm over here looking like Pookie from New Jack City

They are all cheating. To do them properly the knees need to be at a 90 degree angle. Otherwise the wall is doing most of the work.

If the RS Sr QB is even with the RS Fr. QB in performance I truly hope CMR rides with Perry
There’s no way to tell who is even with or ahead of whom at QB when all you’re seeing is routes against air during warmups. Real QB play requires soooooooo much more than what they’re doing in warmups.

The biggest part of playing that position well revolves around the ability to make proper decisions under duress and then execute that decision well.

Did Gurvan have knee issues in high school? I remember reading reports but wasn't sure it was true or not.

This has me more than worried about Gurvan.

That **** light work. Me and my cousins got in trouble all the time doing dumb stuff. My uncle was an Army guy so he would make us hold the wall while holding a gallon jug of water or some college textbooks he had. We were 10-12 at that time...
