Speed

It doesn’t even matter our back 7, our line got no pressure at all on FIU, that’s just bad. We got handled at the LOS by FIU guys

And our WRs are marginal fast. We do not have the sort of guys whose speed causes major problems for opposing coaches, imo. Thomas should be, but we haven’t used him right. It’s all just depressing.

JT is the only guy on our team that would make an opposing DC panic if he got the ball in the open field, and we don't seem to have a clue how to use him. Pope and Harley sure aren't slow, but I certainly never get the sense of "hold onto your butts" when they get the ball like I did when Gaiter got the ball against us. I wonder if weight gain has slowed Harley some, because he looked mercurial in high school... now he just looks "faster than average" on a slight frame. What a crime that Gaiter isn't a Hurricane. Wiggins is an ideal outside guy, physically speaking, for what I would like our offense to be, he just has to get more consistent... on a good Miami team, he's a 2nd string guy until he fixes the hands issue. Our biggest problem in the area, this year, is that our two best offense players minus Brevin - Osborne and DeeJay - aren't speed guys... so we very rarely have a snap where we have 5 fast kids on the field at the same time. It's a mish-mash of chain movers and speed guys and we aren't good at either.

We certainly don't have slow skill kids, but we don't have stress-inducing speed, either, and we sure don't make it our identity like the vision I have for a Miami offense. We seem to do everything we can to suppress it. I just lay awake in bed every night imagining what Art Briles could do in a state where guys like Gaiter grow on trees. We would average 80 points a game.

Sometimes we were only rushing two...it looked like GR was hanging back and spying....spying a QB who never runs.

Strangest defense I've seen.

We got no pressure on their QB. It used to be we'd tell our four DLs to pin their ears back and just rush the passer.

We had no sacks yesterday.

Maddening. Absolutely maddening.

Just like Richt asked "where are the big dudes at?" when he first watched a practice...I always ask the question, "where are the athletic freaks at?" Art Briles was notorious for recruiting absolute athletic freaks - Baylor was littered with those dudes. They don't need to be 4-5 star kids - give me an electric (undersized or not) freak who is a 2-3 star and couple that with a coach that knows how to use that speed, and boom, instant impact. You don't need to recruit tons of those guys, just a couple guys a year on both sides of the ball.

I can’t tell if this is Baker, Stroud or both.

When stroud was at Akron, his lines had some of the lowest pressure and sack numbers around. 8 mentioned in other threads I think the guy prioritizes rush defense and technique over pass. When Kik was here we pinned back and caused havoc. Because of this sometimes we got gashed in the run game. Simpson came in and taught more well rounded principles, so we improved run D but still got after it in obvious passing downs. This year, our Dline is taking linemen on heads up much much more than past years and not shooting gaps as much. DTs aren’t getting through as much and DEs are giving up the edges bc they are stuck to tackles. Again - stroud? Baker? Or both?

Outside of Rousseau our dline has not caused much havoc most games outside the FSU beatdown. Not being able to dominate FIU in the trenches is a joke, period.

... and he found them year after year. 2 star kids from small towns in Texas that UT, A&M, OU, and LSU didn't even have as their plan C kids. As soon as 4 kids graduated, he had 4 more kids lined up who could run like banshees and catch the ball. At freaking BAYLOR..... Waco, TX is THE ****hole of the United States. These kids are out there. I didn't even know Gaiter existed until Saturday. Of course, acquiring them is only half the battle. I understand that guys like Pope would look faster if speed was our offensive identity. Watching Fleming's highlights and then hearing people say that we wanted bigger guys made me want to shoot myself. We just don't get it.

Made a post last year about speed at DB. We don’t have enough.

We should get a little faster in the back 7 next year but there’s not enough.

D$, this is where that "worry about recruiting failures at other positions, we'll fall into decent DBs just because we're Miami" mentality is hurting, man. Henderson and Campbell, two guys that should've been slam dunks if Rumph was even an average recruiter, change this whole conversation. Pair those guys with Bandy and Hall, and we're then a fast secondary even with Carter at the other safety.

Gaiter would probably look like a plodding possession WR at UM.

I remember seeing his pops play in HS - sight to behold. His pops was on the news highlights (local NBC) virtually every week on the HS segment showing some KOR for a TD he had. Dude was electric.

It is truly a shame Erickson couldn't hold it together, thinking back to guys like Gaiter III. I think Pink had the right idea for the future of UM football with regards to Xs and Os but didn't have nearly the discipline or recruiting to see it through. What might have been.....

We have speed on offense. Our skill guys are fast. Thomas, Wiggins, TEs, Harris, Pope, even Harley all have plus speed.

Back 7 is where we are too slow.
At rb too, I like deejay a lot but all 3 rbs are faster than deejay too but they barely play them if at all. Burns looked very good running the ball and explosive. I was asking myself watching him run, where was that all season? We could have certainly used him in other games. Not just talking about rb but Miami needs to worry about playing the best players And not just the ones who according to coaches care the most or even just appeasing the older guys in general

It does but that’s more of a concern of trying to reach championship level. It’s not the reason we are losing to FIU.

Bandy and Blades are good P5 corners and we have only four stars behind them.

The guys Briles recruited were definitely freaks.

Remember when we went up to Knoxville and played Tenn? I do. Cedric Houston broke loose on the second play of the game. He had a good 10 yards on everyone. We had a safety and a corner run track him down before he scored. That’s what our teams should be able to do.

When someone breaks free now the put more distance between them and our defenders. It’s sad really. We have a the greatest collection of HS speed surrounding us but we have safeties that run line backers and corners that run like safeties.
