Some thoughts after the Cal rewatch

I was thinking the same thing

If these guys can’t hold eye discipline and assignments…is zone really the answer?

I'm not sure about zone vs man but honestly don't think we blitz as much next week.

At least increase our numbers in the backend to help mitigate blown coverages?

I genuinely have no clue what the solution is other than better players

I could type some random **** up like some people I’m reading here pretending they have the answer but I don’t know how you force these guys to just like…stop doing what they’re doing

I think we’ve all kinda had our eye on this Louisville game with how badly we got beat last year. Granted we were severely undermanned by then on defense but I’ve been waiting more for the mid point of the season after this game to really get a more macro idea of what we’ve got

I think we have a real shot to beat louisville this year as we improved our roster greatly especially at QB. While our D is not great, louisville has shown to be beatable this year. I like we play them at noon instead of a night game there. That will help too in our favor. I like Miami whether by 3, 7, or whatever. Cam Ward isn't perfect but he knows how to win in crunch time. Just take one game at a time, see how the deck sorts itself out by the end of the year. I like our chances to make the acc title game and win. Beyond that with the playoff, its all a guessing game.

I do think getting damari brown back at some point will help our secondary.

Yeah I’m with you. I should say the part where I was saying I’d wait to judge, that was preseason thinking. I figured we would get multiple tests, some new ones and some familiar ones etc

It’s gonna likely be another heart attack game but I’ve got the utmost faith in our offense. Just need to hold Louisville to some FGs, maybe some turnovers and we could run away with it as well

Also, we might start to see Miami's O coordinator open up more of the playbook too this game so we may see some surprises. I think we can score 30 + especially with Cam Ward at QB.
You are right in that if we can force some turnovers we can really open up a whoop *** on louisville. I would love to see that.

Second is the personal foul penalties, which are inexcusable. The selfish BS has to be dealt with and it isn't. I can't stand George as a person. The kid is just selfish. He got penalized for spinning the ball on a TD and nearly did it again after making a 1st down. That kid I so immature and needs to sit. Period.

Until Mario sits players for selfish penalties, the penalties will continue.
Agree with this so much. If there's one player who still has loser Manny Diaz stink on him, its him. Emotional discipline like a 13 year old girl. How do you flirt with 15 yard personal fouls after every other catch?

Cal scores:

Offense TD 1 - 89 yard drive, but 57 yards on the scoring play
Offense TD 2 - 56 yard drive, but 51 yards on the first play
Offense TD 3 - 75 yard drive, but 66 yards on the scoring play
Offense TD 4 - 80 yard drive, but 56 yards on the third play
Offense FG 1 - 56 yard drive, with 20 and 22 yard runs on first two plays

Defense TD 1 - Pick-6

230 of Cal's 370 yards came on 4 passing plays. 62% of their entire offensive output came on 4 plays, three of which were UM defensive busts.

UM defense gave up 31 points.

TL;DR:
Over the last 3 games we have allowed 15 total 20+ yard plays, 5 of which were 50+ yarders (4 of them against Cal!). Yet we're allowing like legit <57% comp% and <33% 3rd down conv%....We have literally given up like 10 scoring drives out of like 23 total where like 60%+ of their yards on that drive came on 1 play. So half the time teams score on us, it involved a Big play. And there were like 3 or 4 drives where our 15 yard penalties alone accounted for like 25% of their yardage.
