1. Duke was a hoss. We definitely lose this game without him taking that monster role today.

2. We're 7-0 even though it seems like an illusion. We're a good team, and in light of what we've been for many years, it's refreshing to be so much better than we've been. But we're miles away still from an elite team.

3. Running game stepped up again at the end. How about this? If you don't trust your QB (and they obviously don't), then become a run-first team for the ENTIRE game, not just for the last 10 minutes of the game. Pound that sht and then hit them over the top off of playaction. About the only good ball Morris throws at this point is the deep pass, so pound it and occasionally give him a one, or at most 2, read high low deal every once in awhile.

4. The Distinguished Brit Clive basically saved the game for us with that one-handed grab.

5. Crawford looked good there in coverage aside from that bogus PI call. He's improved from earlier this season for sure. Nice to see him get rewarded with the pick.

6. Chick played hard for us today as usual. But he was bull out there collapsing the pocket in the 2nd half and making things tough on Price.

7. Coley brings a new element to the return game. He's got the ability to make something out of nothing as he did on that one long return. Dorsett fair catches that one or gets tripped after 1 yard.

Now the multiple down points:

1. We are still pretty slow. We lack those electric guys on offense and defense that just accelerate past people or explode into them on defense. There are too many plays where we're just too slow to get there to make the play. Looked like we were running in quick sand for much of the first half. I'm sick of hearing about Miami speed because we're more of a grinding and mauling well-conditioned team than we are a fast explosive team. We badly need an infusion of speed on both sides of the football.

2. I'm not a big fan of trying to cover their best player with a LB. I don't care where Campanaro lined up, it was sinful to ax a LB to try to cover him.

3. Our pass rush is still an illusion. It's nowhere to be seen against reputable offensive lines.

4. Why the **** would you allow a team to line up its OL in 5 yard splits and not shoot any of those gaps? I don't get it. How about some blitzes in the A gaps and you'd get to Price before he could set his back foot.

5. At this point when you're in nail biters with everyone maybe we're not playing down to our competition. Maybe we're just a little bit of smoke and mirrors with that 7-0 record. If you struggle once or twice that's playing down. If you're in a dog fight every single week, then maybe that's just who you are right now. Let's not forget, we were awful last year. So this is a **** good improvement.

Let me close by looking at fsu. Jemima has turned fsu from a good team into a team that is a toss-up right now with Alabama for best in the country. It pains me to no end to say that because I hate that program with ever fiber of my being. But it's going to take everything we've got to avoid the rock slide up there.

If we go up there with shtty QB play like we've had with a couple 3 and outs early they'll absolutely jump us in like that Mexican kid in "Colors". Jemima is so accurate it's sickening, and they've got WRs coming out of their asses. And you guys know how we struggle to cover people. If Bush was healthy I'd feel a lot better about us trying to defend the pass in that game, but if poor AJ is out there he's going to get thrown in the wood chipper by those guys.

We will either need to go balls to the wall and hope to strike a couple early quick long scores to keep our bearings and gain some confidence. Or we'll have to go in with a run run run and run some more plan and try to shorten the game and hope for the best. We shall see, fellas.

Great post.......I've agreed with you in multiple threads on all counts. The "speed" factor is quite obvious. We need more of it.

Great post!!!!!!!!!!!

Next week we are going to be tested. I hope Coley can come up with a game plan to keep us competitive and the real Stephen Morris steps up.

I'm a true Cane fan, but it is going to take a perfect game and some luck to beat FSU.

Great post.
I am waiting for the real Canes' fans to come out and call you all kind of names for calling us a far from elite team and FSU being on a different level. In essence, you are saying it will be very hard for us to win against an elite team like FSU if we play like we have played the last two games. Something many posters have said but got slaughtered for.

What is the deal with Bush? Young fella is no where near as good as last year.

Agree with everything, especially the quoted part.

We're getting there on offense, but defensively, we're not explosive. Guys like AJ, Cornileus, and Green should not be getting burn in the 4th quarter of a close game.

I'm a dyed in the wool homer, but it should be obvious to everyone that this fsu team is on a different level than we are right now. We can get there, but their QB changes the whole deal for them. Football is such a QB-centric game, and this dude's a once every blue moon type of QB.

We will need to be almost perfect, and they will need to help us out. All the stars will have to line up perfectly for us. I'd consider it a virtual miracle if we go in there and beat them.

I'm convinced we look slow because of the defensive scheme. The few times we've blitzed this season and play man press we look fast, quick, aggressive, etc. (see UF game)

Unfortunately, I think we've been seeing the real Steve Morris. He's an erratic guy, and the coaches seem to be at the point now where they've lost trust in him.

That's exactly right. Those 3 guys are great Canes and I love them for their effort, but they're soap horses. Cornileus just looks so weak out there. When he impacts guys he always bounce off of them. ****, he almost babied his way out of making that big sack on Price.

And poor AJ is overmatched. I've likened him to Jeff Popovich from the 90s. You didn't see UM truly turn the corner in that era until Popovich got all his reps taken by a better player.

I'm not buying it. We blitz a lot, and our blitzers look like they're playing pattycake. They look like they're going half speed on the blitzes, and the minute they're faced with any resistance they just latch onto the guy who is resisting them and try to stalemate him.

Agree with the lack of explosiveness observation. Part of this is attributable to reaction time as well. We seem to lack instincts in sniffing out plays. There was so many instances today watching this defense play where I was waiting for a defender to close on a play and it seemed they always arrived too late to break up the play.

Good ****, Chise, as usual.

I will say this about point #3 because I think it's an important topic:

I think we came in to the game with it in mind. We gave up the quick points and they were stonewalling our run game at the beginning. I think we had to, or felt we had to, open it up a bit quicker than we wanted because our defense was struggling. We didn't get a chance to get in that early rhythm running it the way I think we wanted to. JMO though.

All that and nothing about our dreadful offense? At Home against Wake and you struggle like that scoring points?

The passing game has gone from unbelievable under Jedd Fisch to flat out atrocious under James Coley. Same freakin players. The goal line offense on your own 20 with Malcolm Lewis as the only wideout is laughable.

James Coley looks like the weakest link.

We often blitz late and without disguise. A couple times today, we showed our blitz early, the WF QB literally pointed and changed pass pro, and the blitz didn't get there. That makes the guys look slower. Our DL is often asked to engage in order to keep contain. That makes guys look slower. Part of that is our style of D and part of that seems like a conscious decision because we're still playing guys who are not dynamic.

We don't have world beaters out there yet - I agree on that. We may not be as dynamic as we will be, but my point (and I think the point of DeadPoets) is that there are instances where we look slower than what we are.

Today is an example where our scheme was used against us and guys looked like they were on their heels because of it. Like Golden said, you have to tip your cap to a really good game plan by WF.
