Some quick scrimmage notes

I definitely like whatā€™s happening and the direction and plan Mario has Put in place. That alone has me optimistic of an improved season with something to build on and optimistically looking toward the future. Iā€™m more interested in TEAM and seeing this squad come together on and off the field.

Podcast was good stuff

Some things I noticed:

-TVD not perfect but the clear starter. D mentioned his deep ball is still elite though and that was the craziest part of last year, essentially removing his biggest strength šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø but D complimented Emoryā€™s presence. They compared him to Kaaya. Brown up and down still but D mentioned again that this setup isnā€™t great for him. He canā€™t make plays with his legs or do the intangibles we saw him flash last year

-Chaney looks good. D focused a lot of comments praising him and his jump cut ability. The RB group is impressive and D said Chris Johnson is back as well. Still a ways to go but heā€™s healthy. No rush with Citizen but with him and Riley coming inā€¦thatā€™s a legit group

-Harrell is bigger than D expected and will make plays

-TE room a bit murky because of injuries. Lack of TEs has helped speed up WR development due to 4 WR sets

-OL doing OL things. If something were to happen to Lee short term Cristobal, long term Rivers with McCoy or Samson moving to Tackle. Seems Samson is only a matter of time

-WRs are Colby, X, George with Harrell coming on, RayRay doing his thing. Colby had a huge TD and dropped another big one

-DL getting contributions from JHH and Harvey is encouraging. Gore as well.

-Kelly, Taylor, Deen, Mesidor/Bain. Bain doing Bain things per usual

-LB starters Mauigoa is a lock. Wes and Cloyd fighting for the other spot, D said Cloyd if he had to pick. Said Cloyd is much better than expected

-Bobby Washington is a freak of nature with more hints that heā€™s gotta clean up some mental things off the field perhaps

-Daryl Porter Jr looking good. No mention of Richard but Davante is the only lock so far. Stafford is really talented just a bit skinny at this point

-Jaden Harris impressing. Mentioned he played RB and receiver but very coachable and smart, as well as talented. Sees him rising because of this. Markeith is the #3 safety at the moment

-on recruiting the NIL is strong but itā€™s a crapshoot this year. Made some good points for those that listened

You're actually bringing facts to the conversation šŸ‘šŸ½
All I'll say about the 60 number is that I don't think we've ever run a scheme exactly like this one. Lashlee was a bit similar. I really hope it is by committee though if we've got the talent to get a lot of guys quality reps. Getting the ball effectively to our best Playmakers at RB and TE as well as WR could really be fun to watch. Go Canes šŸˆ

In fairness, our offenses have been stuck in caveman times for a while having a receiver with 60 catches is a yearly occurrence at a lot of places. I expect to have at least one guy in that range this year.
We have so many dudes with no standout I expect it to be spread around too much for that. If anyone itā€™s X or young.

One thing D said on the cast that since the TEs are banged up we are seeing more 4 wide WR sets so itā€™s accelerating the WR development

Figured Cloyd was going to be better than expected. Nicholson knew what he needed and what he was being over. And Wes was uneven last year. May need another for everything to fit into place. Heā€™ll be a good one long term but he reminds me of Kermaine Grace. Not quite a guy you want starting as a redshirt freshman.

Either way our LB group is finally going to look a little like a Miami LB group. Canā€™t wait to see what Chase Smith and JW can do closer to the line plus all the freshmen.

We donā€™t have to keep rehashing this but the size difference is staggering. Flagg and Steed always played hard and had their moments but they were small. Cloyd and Mauigoa are huge. As are some of the freshmen. Wes was small coming in but I think thatā€™s encouraging that heā€™s in the mix with Cloyd

Size, speed, burst all improved. Add that all up and the force those guys generate is so much better.

.....

Just got through the podcast. The number one takeaway I had was that we finally have a lot of depth. Depth at RB, WR, OL, DL, LB, CB. Safety and QB only thin spots, and a couple of the CBs could move over if needed. So barring injury to TVD, we're talking about a really balanced team. That will count for a lot when it comes to the 4th quarter, as well as keeping injuries down.

The posters on this thread are all over ATL's knee jerk comment about 60 catches for Harrell. But while I also don't think Harrell will be anywhere close to that reception count, I have consistently felt he will get a ton of snaps and have an outsized positive impact for our team because his speed needs to be respected. Bama wanted him for a reason. He's gong to help us win some games.

Harrell is a real wild card for this offense. Even if itā€™s just a couple of Travis Benjamin type plays per game, even if you donā€™t throw it to him, the defense has to respect it

Weā€™ve got a couple of deep threats and a few guys that can work the underneath and different levels

Last year we had absolutely none of that and also like you heard on the podcast, removing the deep pass from TVDs ****nal is literally taking away his biggest weapon

In the last 12 years, UM's had 3 WRs total put up 60+ catches: Hurns, Coley, and Rambo. And none of those dudes averaged 20+ yards per catch. In fact, I don't think any Cane has caught 60+ and average 20+ ypc in a season.

For perspective, Michael Irvin, Kevin Williams, Santana Moss, and Andre Johnson never caught 60 passes in a season at UM.

IIRC, the only guy that averaged 20 yards per catch was Eddie Brown in 1983, and he had right around 40 catches. So yeah, he made them count. And Eddie was incredible

Harrell may only have 60 catches this year but heā€™s going to average 20-25 ypc

Your lips to Godā€™s ears kid.

Couple that with b + productivity at slot , big slot, & we got 40+ pts in a unit led by #9 against basically our whole schedule on any given Saturday.

ā€œNIL is strong but this year is a crapshoot.ā€ I havenā€™t listened to the podcast yet. Can someone expand on what that means?

It means the top 10 or so programs can all match incentives and another handful can reach up to compete on any given recruit. So itā€™s going to come down to where the recruit and his circle really want to go and theyā€™re being professionally advised now by real agents on keeping that info close to the vest to maximize their payout. Very much like NFL free agency.
